Declan Ganley is Irish, born in the UK, but he’s Irish now.
He’s still a silly billy though.

        I’ll have a go so.
Regardless of a person’s opinion, in a democratic country they are entitled to express it.
To describe the above youtube comment as succinct is worrying, mostly in relation to the “he’s not a woman” part. We’re we discussing a situation in which a woman were criticized for not being a man people would be appalled and rightly so.
This referendum has if nothing else exposed a nasty streak of double standards in Ireland, a man is free to comment on the referendum once he shares the popular opinion.
People taking it upon themselves to tear down referendum posters on both sides need to step back and examine their motives. Surely we can have a mature discussion about this referendum and not rely on all this point scoring nonsense. No by is coming out of this well regardless of the result of the vote. There is a lot of growing up to be done on both sides.

          Well said.
And I’m actually 100% in favour of even more liberal abortion laws than currently proposed.

I think people are at a point where they’re afraid to express their feelings. The No side at the extreme end are out with the graphic imagery but there is a sense that the Yes side have taken a position of moral and intellectual superiority which I feel may have an extremely detrimental effect on the outcome of the vote. People don’t appreciate being brow beaten and spoken down to, we as a people don’t have a history of accepting such nonsense and nonsense it most certainly is. When this referendum was announced I was prepared for the type of one upmanship and point scoring we’ve gotten, it doesn’t make me any less ashamed of how it’s played out, no more than I’m ashamed of the law as it stands and also the terrible job of changing it this referendum represents.

Great comments there hitting the nail on the head.
A good hard dose of cop-on is needed and less of the groupthink.

          3. Bull Duggan

The Yes side are the Remainers.
They consider themselves to be morally superior and their opponents as contemptible relics.
And I say this as a Yesser.

          4. Nigel

The No side had a fake nurse who said he was pulling baby parts out of his pockets and a guy who was handing out fascist symbols to young Yes marchers so John McGuirk could put the pictures up on twittet. But yeah, sure.

I’ll say only this: A lot of women I’ve spoken to feel that men shouldn’t have a say in this referendum.

Personally, I disagree, and I’m not saying it’s right at all but that youtube comment above typifies how a lot of women (at least the ones I know) feel about it.

Harrumph. It’s a stupid thing to get your knickers in a knot about, as it’s entirely notional. Get worked up about the facts. People have gone off on all manner of tangents during this campaign. Luckily, I am incredibly clear-sighted and not in the least OH LOOK, A LADYBIRD! I’d love a glass of wine.

          2. Nullzero

Well those women need to examine their opinions and why they have them. This is a point I’ve heard a number of times over the last few days and to be completely honest it really makes me despair. What sort of double think gets you to such a conclusion?
This preposterous “feminism” we have today seems to be bypassing any notion of equality with a notional sense that men are of lesser importance than women. This nonsense needs to stop. All I can hope is that by the time my daughter is a grown woman such desire to espouse notions of misogyny and misandry will have run their course and some logical sense of equality will have been reached.

          3. Nigel

Look. You’re on the same side. Maybe spare the people feeling stress and pressure and anxiety as we move into the final week-and-a-half the lecturing and sermonising about tone and understandably exasperated sentiments? What they’re getting from the other side is bad enough.

        3. Nigel

If only the people going on and on and on wailing lamentations for sensible discussions and gnashing their teeth about both sides would stop devoting paragraphs to snappy YouTube comments we might be able to have a sensible discussion.

What are you on about? He’s more Irish than Danny Healy Rae. He was born to Irish parents and moved back here at an age that most (normal) kids would have lost all traces of an English accent.

  2. Ron Dolan

Has Ganley explained where he got the money for his failed Libertas campaign?

C I Ate some lunch and am still looking for the explanation???

      1. Daisy Chainsaw

He’s in Ireland. He may carry this tragic farce to it’s natural conclusion. No aborting it.

  3. Lilly

Wouldn’t you know he was ‘educated’ by the Mercy nuns. He had just enough intelligence to make some dough, but not enough to think for himself.

    1. well

He thinks for himself, he just doesn’t want us and particularly women to do so. And he wasn’t very pro-life when he was calling for the west to go to war with Iran.

      1. Daisy Chainsaw

That’s because he’ll make an awful lot of money out of it!

I love the way that Soros is the Big Bad Bogeyman of the antichoice campaign, but Ganley made is fortune selling his business to the Hungarian Jew/Nazi* (*Delete as applicable), so accepting some of Soros’ millions is morally okay, I guess!

      2. Lilly

So is his pro-life stance just posturing to insert himself into the debate? Underlying everything he says and does, there seems to be a desperate need for attention and validation.

  4. Diddles

Since the CB debate I can now relate to Kevin keegan and his famous ‘I would love it if we beat them’ meltdown. I wish I felt a bit more measured but I don’t and I would luv it…

  5. John

“He’s not Irish” would be classed as bigotry if directed toward a liberal or pro-choicer, but it seems the rules of tolerance are forever being applied selectively.
