New Dublin Lord Mayor Niall Ring

Declan Tyrrell writes:

New mayor, Former Banker, Developer, speculator and member of Bertie’s St Luke “mafia” Nial Ring, was elected Lord Mayor of DCC last night

He is one of Bertie’s old boys, although I can only find reference to this in old articles, no connection made in coverage of his new position.

A profile Via Independent.ie in 2010:

“He set up Barrick Capital Corporation in 1992, an IFSC-based subsidiary of international mining firm Barrick Gold.

He was general manager there until 1995. In the late 1990s he was head of finance at Bankgesellschaft Berlin (Ireland). Its parent, a top German bank, famously had to be bailed out by the German exchequer to the tune of €2bn in 2001.

“He was MD of north Dublin builder Jerry Beade’s Greencastle Investments in the early 2000s. Ring has said his biggest business break came through a site he bought with Beade in Coolock, Dublin.

From a staunch Fianna Fáil family, Ring was part of Bertie Ahern’s St Luke’s inner circle for several years, but when the Dublin north city boy was elected to that ward of Dublin City Council in 2009 it was as an independent, having not been selected to run for the party. He had run for Fianna Fail in 2004, losing narrowly. Until last year he was a longstanding government appointee to the board of the IDA.”

His business partner in these ventures, Liam McGrattan, appears to have self posted this video following a two year stay at The Shelbourne Hotel…
