Appalling gender balance on that list of speakers.
Agreed, why are there no talking penises on this list?
Why doesnt Tara Deacy state that she is a candidate for the Social Democrats
I would expect Anne Marie McNally to pull out of this like her fellow party members did from the McGill Summer School over gender balance concerns.
+1
Same tired faces, but just a different gender to the Mcgill lineup. The problem in Ireland is not gender inequality but the promotion of those who are lacking in talent. There are plenty of very talented women in Irish universities, but not one seems to be represented on this panel. This is a fupping twitter lineup .All sycophantic yapping, but no real brains behind it all.
Olga is not of the ‘same tired faces’ and has done great stuff on the ‘sheets’ Telly, in fairness.
Hey concern trolls – this is about women’s rights. We don’t complain when it’s all men talking about men’s health and wellbeing, because it’s great to see lads talking about it. McGill is completely irrelevant.
The Danielle Carroll Summer School 2018 “sprung up as a direct result of the controversy surrounding what is arguably Ireland’s most famous summer school – the MacGill” says Anne Marie McNally.
AM holds a Masters in Communication (Political & Public), so I’m sure there was no miscommunication in that sentence, in fairness.
I agree with your point about it being on women’s concerns by the way, just not how AM has tried to promote it as an answer to the MacGill school, which is clearly nonsense.
To address the male-dominated MaGill we get an all female summer school. Simple enough to understand.
Plse see responses on previous post linked above, thank you.
If I go back and look will they be any less dogmatic and mansplainy? Cos jaysus.
You’re quite the ridiculous character Nigel.
And you like to make lots of personal derogatory remarks.
Only when deserved, like when commenters are disingenuous
Yeah, hate it when that happens.
We agree on somethings :)
What’s killing our women?
Usually the answer is men.
I would have thought it was old-age/natural causes. Relatively few women are killed.
Looking solely at women of reproductive age – from the WHO (http://www.who.int/gho/mortality_burden_disease/causes_death/top_10/en/)
Women aged 15-29:
1. Maternal conditions
2. self-harm
3. road injury
“Interpersonal violence” is number 8
Women aged 30-49:
1. HIV/AIDS
2. Heart disease
3. Maternal conditions
What’s whopper is the data about men, which shows the impact of toxic masculinity in full:
men aged 15-29:
1. Road injury
2. interpersonal violence
3. self-harm
“collective violence and legal intervention” is number 6
men aged 30-49:
1. heart disease
2. HIV/AIDS
3. road injury
self-harm is 6 and interpersonal violence is 8
what can learn here is that we need to raise our sons to communicate their frustrations instead of bottling it up. and y’all need to drive safer.
Ah, so media diversity is not actually killing women. Excellent research there Starina.
We also need equal investment in services for men’s health – physical and mental – as is currently given to women.
it is one thing to shout about men needing to speak up, it’s a total other when there are little to no services for them when they do.
On top of that, the vast majority of psychologist and counsellors are trained to deal with women, and the female psyche, and not in male psychology, nor the methods that best suited to men when they do open up.
Men are excellent at opening up, once they are given the space and place to do so. But they’ve been ignored when it comes to provision of services.
Look it up!
What a pity the Men Right’s movement seems to be dominated by anti-feminists dedicated to attacking women. Actually it’s a bloody tragedy because it could do so much good in promoting the issues in your excellent comment.
Nigel, this is not about MRA’s you churlish little sniveling muppet.
These groups help men… none are MRAs.
– Men’s Sheds
– Men’s Development Network (which has a feminist ethos)
– AMEN
In the UK, there are a few agencies that have come up in the past few years…. I know of and have been volunteering with people here in Ireland who are working to replicate the work of some of these agencies… and none are MRAs.
– Men & Boys Coalition
– All Boys Rock
– A Band of Brothers
– CALM / Campaign Against Living Miserably
– Blue Ribbon Foundation
– Lads Need Dads
– Both Parents Matter
– Mankind Initiative
Crawl back into 4Chan or wherever you go for your info that informs your view of “seems to be dominated by anti-feminists dedicated to attacking women”, Nigel… or get a life, good lad.
Those do indeed look like excellent groups – I know Men’s Sheds is brilliant. As I say it is a pity the MRA dominates the online discourse with so much vile toxic abuse. Such as what you just leveled at me.
Re-wording eh…. whatever.
You’re not exactly changing my mind, I’m afraid.
“toxic masculinity” is a buzzword, and means absolutely nothing accept to persons looking for a thing to point at and say “see! it’s men and maleness that’s the problem”. If you wish to be taken seriously, stop playing buzzword bingo.
Men and women are different, biologically and psychologically. Stop buying into pseudo theories based off of claptrap ideas like ‘blank slatism’ which says the state of being male or female is only a social construct. It is ridiculous nonsense ideas like that that promotes such buzzwords.

Seeing as we’re using international data….
There could be more money, for helping men and boys, if there was even some honesty in statistical research.
Take a look at the UK and the VAWG statistics which count victims of sexual and physical abuse of men and boys as…. women and girls.
How can monies be got for problems that are not even reported in official statistics.
There was a platitudinal effort in more recent stats where there was a clause put at the bottom of the report which was akin to ‘may contain nuts’ in a snack bar, see here – https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/sep/07/cps-report-violence-against-women-girl-men-boys-victims-violent-crime
– – – –
Check out trafficking statistics. Yes, in sex trafficking women make up the most, but when all trafficking are counted, men and boys make up over 40% but hardly anyone would know because the media always report on women and girls, and ignore the plight of men and boys.
– – – –
Check the number of studies done by the European Institute on Gender Equality – http://eige.europa.eu/rdc – and try and find a study that is actually done on men and boys among the tens to hundred+ of reports completed.
– – – –
There are problems for men and boys, and they are largely ignored by officaldom, for want of a better word. That is a fact.
One need only look at the recent ‘Istanbul Convention’ which doesn’t even name ‘male victims’ and is referred to as a VAWG document. I personally had numerous emails exchanged with Frances Fitzgerald when she was Minister for Justice on this matter and it was like talking to a brick fuppin’ wall.
“Men and women are different, biologically and psychologically. ”
I was wondering if someone was going to say this. By saying that you’re implying that men are naturally more violent and there’s nothing we can do to tame the poor wretched beasts.
That’s a ridiculous, juvenile and ignorant leap of an assumption to make. Grow up!
There is more difference and variation between persons within a gender than there is between the genders.
That is, not everyone conforms, as you have assumed, to extreme behaviours. And more do not, than do.
More mothers kill their infants than fathers do – does that mean all mothers or mothers in general, by your logic, are infant killers and just cannot help themselves and “there’s nothing we can do to tame the beasts”?
No, of course not.
Again, please grow up and cop on to yourself.
Some links for the fact in my last comment: https://www.childtrends.org/indicators/infant-homicide
To clarify, I’m speaking of neonaticide – https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj109LP3JbcAhXLDcAKHXoUBqYQFggoMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ccc.qld.gov.au%2Fsitemap.xml.gz&usg=AOvVaw0OH4aJ6C9g_hdtixgBnMTY
That link is broken, try this one – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neonaticide
Further reading:
“Most homicides of young children are committed by family members through beatings or suffocation. Although victims include approximately equal numbers of boys and girls, offenders include a disproportionate number of women. Homicides of young children may be seriously under counted.”
https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/ojjdp/187239.pdf
Note: using international studies as the Irish govt / Gardaí stats are highly “innacurate” according to the CSO and reported as such – https://www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/inaccuracies-found-in-garda-homicide-figures-1.3061313
LOL whoops, set off Clampers’ MRA alarm
No, just facts Starina. Maybe you could try reading some.
– – –
It is sadly funny though, that you simply resort to calling me an MRA when you have no rational retort.
Nothing new in that, as you’ve nothing to add but an out dated ideological view…. kinda sad too really, to be so closed minded.
LOL
If MacGill is “stale, pale and male” are these “young, wan, wans”?
the unmakelovables
Surely, MacGill is “male, pale, stale, and largely Fine Gael”.
This event seems the opposite. I’m in.
Good to see this happen: real women talking real issues in a real location. If you don’t like it, start your own.
Where’s Ivana Bacik, by the way?
And will Kathy Sheridan/Roisin Ingle drop in for their Podcast?
Bacik no longer cares about anything as long as she’s got a little power.
Note –
1) Cis men, trans, non-binary and others are not precluded from signing up and attending.
2) It would be good if there was an unconference-style part to this event so the audience/participants could pick a topic(s) to discuss on the day: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference
3) Whingers and moaners on here would do well to read up on the story of the woman after whom this event is named. Here, let me help you: http://www.echo.ie/news/article/hundreds-gather-in-tallaght-to-say-goodbye-to-danielle
1) I’m sure that the McGill organisers would have said that women weren’t precluded from signing up and and attending their all-male panel sessions, but I am sure people would have still found it a bit problematic…
Christ. I hope not
It is good to see happen, but out of those five themes, I would have expected representation from men as well as women, who work in these areas. And three of those five themes affect men and women equally so should be discussed in that context.
+1
I’d also like to have seen a discussion on single parents in this debate considering the situation the poor woman was in. Where was the father of those kids…
Quite striking it’s missing, in fairness.
And two if those things affect men more than women.
(homelessness 55% male; rising to 85% for rough sleeping; + addiction 70% male)

what can learn here is that we need to raise our sons to communicate their frustrations instead of bottling it up. and y’all need to drive safer.
that was meant to be in response above, soz.
To be fair, shouldn’t we ALL try to drive safer. It’s on both lists and isn’t broken down as to who was at fault. Driving can be dangerous for both sexes and leveling the accusation of the boy racer stereotype at men surely women being nervy drivers holds weight thrown the other way.
You are looking at the whole world; if you restrict it to Europe you get a very different story:
Women: all ages [crude rate per 100,000 in brackets]
1. Ischaemic heart disease [304/100K]
2. Stroke [180/100K]
3. Breast Cancer [35/100K]
Men: all ages
1. Ischaemic heart disease [291/100K]
2. Stroke [125/100K]
3. Trachea, bronchus, lung cancer [73/100K]
If you look at the rates for younger ages there are *huge* differences:
For women aged 15-29,
1. Road Injury [8/100K]
2. Self-harm [6/100K]
3. Interpersonal Violence [4/100K]
For men aged 15-29,
1. Self-harm [32/100K] – 5 times as many
2. Road Injury [31/100K] – 4 times as many
3. Interpersonal Violence [14/100K] – 3½ times as many
and this continues in the 30-49 age group men’s rates are 78, 50, 26 per 100K; women’s are 19, 16, 12
Facts are sexist !
Facts are sexy !
FTFY
:0)
Ok so there’s less violence against women in Europe, which is nice, but it’s not a good thing that two of the top three killers of men 15-29 in Europe are self-harm and violence. Violence turned inwards and violence turned outwards. It’s a problem.
Yes, we are all in agreement on that.
But unlike you, a growing number do not think there is “nothing we can do to tame the poor wretched beasts.”
And it has been a problem without the funding, the services, the will, nor the qualified personnel to tackle it.
Male psychology is a heavily under researched field, and until there is more put into it, the problem will continue.
The good news is, the field of study in male psychology is growing, albeit slowly, but is sadly still heavily under resourced.
way off the mark yappy yep
men with their hotheaded aggressive tempers drive with their foot to the floor
women not so much
Speak to me again like that and I’ll find out where you are, punch your face to a bloody pulp then drink all your beer before defiling all the women in your family….aaahhh I see what you mean. I probably would have driven too fast to your place cause I was all pumped up on man energy. Point taken.
do one, plonker
just so you know, your post does not come under the umbrella of humour
+1
Oh Clampers…..
Oh Yep, you’ve usually better gags than that, in fairness :)
You CAN spell does!!! Go, david, go!
That all looks like going from one extreme:
MacGill n’ the lads all singing and all dancing, all along the Main Stream Choirs
To the other
South Inner City
All women panelists, of whom, if any, are rarely seen inside the party tent and alongside the man-made policy and procedures setters
Interestingly…
No Joan Collins. Her Constituency office is just up the road btw.
And Anne Marie McNally is being tagged as the former Dolphins Barn Community Centre and now Political Director for the Social Democrats.
I’ve never seen Anne Marie McNally in Dublin SC or anywhere near Dolphins Barn / Maryland
I don’t even know who the Social Democrat candidate (s) are
And I’ve lived and worked here for over 20 years
Long before there was any regeneration ribbon cutting going on
Anyway
Back to my point
Why go to extremes here
This is exactly what is wrong with any affirmative action. Polarisation.
And puts genuine equality and fair access to all voices and points of view at risk
And makes a mockery of people like me, who only want us to all play by the same rules
I was going on with this but have opted to do it inta a FrillBit,
Wether it gets hosted now is another matter
BTW
Great wind out there today for any Kite etc surfers.
Perfect conditions for a bitta decent Lazer dingy class action too
“tagged as the former Dolphins Barn Community Centre”
Now, now Frilly, don’t be knocking her poverty victim credentials, or “intersectionality victim-points” ! :)
Not knocking
Just observing
But worth mentioning again
Joan Collins knows that community like the back of her hand
And although well retired
So too does Mary Upton
2 ladies never seen cutting ribbons or planting trees or panel sitting there
Just saying
I hear ya !
I think its all been said love
Perhaps
I don’t need to read every comment here to form an opinion or see what way the wind is going to band wagon aboard
Rarely do
As you well know
I walk my own talk
Everytime
And All the time
Just cause you have ta change your hat here every second week
To disguise yerself
To hide yerself
Don’t ever
Ever
Presume I am inflicted with the same doubts about meself

anyone can make up a fake name and not put their face to that name – you’re the same as the rest of us make no mistake on that one
you do appear to be in your own bubble though we differ on that score
Don’t say us, there’s a good chap.
why not papi
You are very much on your own, as in life, so it is online. With good reason.
your affair if you want to support a faceless ‘here’s me and who’s like me’ type that’s been rocking it since 2010
more power to you
Papi the sheep
Frilly needs no help from me, sunshine, now if I was an unarmed Palestinian, I’d keep my eye on you.
what are you blathering about?
got to dash, laters
Oh yeah
Apologies Olga and Anne Marie
I won’t be there
I’ll be walking Bray Head with Kenny Tynan
oh lovely can’t wait to meet you and get your autograph
Be delighted
I’ll even go the full selfie

Censorship
No thanks
But if it’s your privacy you are protecting
Then of course
However that protection entitlement applies to everyone
Not who you and your band of midnight lurkers pick and choose
it’s your privacy that’s being protected, for now
roll on tomorrow though eh?
muppet
Thanks for proving my point around privacy being everyone’s right
And not just yours
The side affects :
you will prove everyone here right about you from a ways back
And me wrong
So I’m sure ye’ll all be delighted
Were you dashing to do your weewees? You said you’d to go somewhere at 11.59 yet here you are bashing angrily at the keyboard 60 seconds later.
Maybe step away for a while and have a nice cup of tea, dear.
