While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to “The Killing of Georgie Parts I and II” by Rod Stewart because of the story told in the song and the plaintive “Oh Georgie, stay” outro. (I’m wellin’ up here just writing that.)

Also Kermit singing The Rainbow Connection because “the lovers, the dreamers and me”. It is pure joy, optimism and happiness in song form.

      Two things.

      1 Agree on Rainbow Connection.
2 Did John Lennon sue over Give Peace A Chance being borrowed… cos he should’ve.

While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs because they don’t love her like I loved her before she got away.

        1. Bertie Blenkinsop

You’ve never quite come to terms with the fact there’s a Lady Bertie, have you?

          1. mildred st meadowlark

Calleth my name darling and I shall appear.

Did you want me to change my name to Lady Mildred of Blenkinsop?

I always get a bit emosh when I listen to Johnny Cash singing Hurt. All that emotion, him singing it having Alzheimer’s, the video with June in it. Jaykers.

  4. ZeligIsJaded

While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Distant Sky by Nick Cave because the context and performance together make it almost impossible not to weep to.

    1. Lilly

That’s a beautiful, haunting song. What do you think it’s about? It was written before his son’s death but recorded afterwards.

“While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to More Than Everything by Bombay 1 because it is so an incredibly simplistic and sparse, a song that simultaneously fills me with melancholy and joy to a point that it feels like it slows the beat of my heart….

and I forgot to give it to the DJ at my wedding…. fupp… :(

..I did well up a little while typing this.. and listening to it’

Enjoy… or cry… see where it takes you :)

While not often found crying (lies), I have literally been moved to tears listening to Starry Starry Night by Don McLean because it’s a wonderful song that tells the bittersweet story of a misunderstood artist, who fought bitterly against the pain of mental illness and I can’t help but be moved by it.

I almost always cry at the line: “Frameless heads on nameless walls with eyes that watch the world and can’t forget.”

And while not actually contemporary as such, Ne Me Quitte Pas by Jacques Brel is absolutely stunning and heartbreaking, even if you don’t speak French.

While never found crying, I have been almost moved to tears listening to an upbeat panpipes-version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters because the cafe beneath my office has been playing it repeatedly on loop since around half 10.

Heh. Years ago I was on a long-haul Iberia flight (not to be recommended, total cheapo airline) where the song they played on a loop when we were delayed (by quite a long time) and when we taxied on both sides of the journey was Changes by Seu Jorge. When I hear it now I want to tear my own ears off.
I’m trying to remember how long ago it was. Well over ten years ago and it still enrages me,

‘don’t give up’, peter gabriel/kate bush.
now i’m a hard, manly man.
it’s just that whenever i listen to it i get dust in my eye or something.

While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Kentucky Avenue by Tom Waits because the twist at the end displays a lovely human side to the (apparently) hard-chaw narrator.

I fell asleep before I could start crying you bunch of wet blankets yis ;)

  12. Jasper

While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Against the Wind by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band because I wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then

(but mainly the mere sight of Forrest Gump sets me off)

while not often found crying, I have been moved to thoughts of mindless violence by the debilitating white noise people play through inefficient headsets on public transport
Happy Friday everyone on the 69 today

      1. Jasper

I’d call them intrusive thoughts (less provocative than mindless violence)

Like when I’m walking down a flight of stairs and I’m being held up by a really slow person. That little voice appears in the back of my mind saying ‘go on, just push them, nobody is watching’

        1. Janet, I ate my avatar

why don’t folks follow the one side of the escalator stand to the right rule
what’s with the grown adults with shoes on cushions back of the bus
what’s with chewing gum with your gob open
          think I’m done :)

While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to the cover of Old Town by the Corrs because it induces a pain beyond words.

  16. gorugeen

While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Dry your eyes by The Streets because even though it’s a bit twee it does perfectly capture the deeply unpleasant experience of a surprise breakup not of your instigation. Methinks most of us can relate. Of in the grand scheme of things they’re small fry but at the time they really feel awful.

  17. Lilly

While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Dreaming my Dreams by Waylon Jennings because… just because.

  18. Lilly

While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Missing by Everything but the Girl because it was on a mix tape given to me by a boy long ago.

  19. Happy Molloy

About Today by The National because it’s perfectly sad and reflective and makes strong men cry at the end of Warrior because brothers have strong unspoken love, even when they’re estranged!

Bap Kennedy – The Mighty Ocean Alcohol.
Stonking final verse from Shane McGowan in one take.
It sums up the highs and lows of the evil drink.

“While not often found crying, I have literally been moved to tears, listening to, Storm by Lifehouse, because of its intensity and relevance, when missing close family members in other countries”.

    * Don’t listen to it if you’re of a delicate disposition.

” While not often found crying, I have literally been been moved to tears by Song For Marcella by Bik McFarlane, because it tells of the pain of the loved ones left behind, after the 1981 hunger strikes”.

    Wichita Lineman, Glen Campbell

after the da passed I had to clear out his house as you do.

had spent my teenage years busily cringing inside as he played his records…Cash, Campbell, Diamond, Irish showband shite…and raging against it all with the Buzzcocks, Specials, Clash etc.

I never ever gave his musical choices much respect at the time, what a plonker I was.

anyways I spent a week playing those records as I cleared & sorted the house…Wichita Lineman was the one that got me deepest. great song.

  24. Ting-Tong

Iondon underground by amateur transplants coz it’s a cracker of a song and reminds me of my new english mate ollie

“While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Suzanne by Leonard Cohen because it was the song we were listening to when I received my first kiss. It was 1976, she was 16 and I was 14, I remember it like it was yesterday.

I love Leonard Cohen and this song in particular, it just has a little extra something for me.

“While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Whitney Houston singing the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl in 1991 because of the sheer power of the delivery at a time of war that moved even non-Americans and as a reminder of what we’ve lost.”

“While not often found crying, I’m literally moved to tears by Mary’s Eyes by Gaelic Storm because my uncle used to serenade me and taunt me with it, annoyed me at the time, brings great memories now”.

Also, Mary In The Morning by Elvis, very old song, before my time, but have good memories of having it sang to me.

  28. Spaghetti Hoop

While not often found crying, I have been literally moved to tears listening to Can’t Get Used to Losing You by The Beat because that 10-yr old SKA head that kissed me at the school disco NEVER TEXTED, EMAILED, SKYPED OR SNAP-CHATTED.

Try, song to the siren, by this mortal coil
Go on, really listen to it, i cant anymore because it inflicts actual physical pain.
Think martin sheen in the opening sequences of apocalypse now.
I dont know why, it just does.

  32. Johnny Keenan

While not often found crying I have been literally moved to tears listening to Us And Them by Pink Floyd.

Not just because it comes from Dark Side Of The Moon (arguably the best album ever). Not because I have been listening and understanding the track and album since I was 7.
But because it’s melody soaring sax crescendo and profound lyric. The fundamental questions are asked. Who are we what are we doing here and how can we survive it.
It’s a trippy song that’s so emotively charged. Love respect and connection are the answers.
When I saw Roger Waters perform this masterpiece in Dublin recently I was an emotional wreck with the imagery he used to accompany the song.

    “Out of the way
    It’s a busy day
I’ve got things on my mind
    For want of the price
    Of tea and a slice
    The old man died”
