“It is a wonderful office, I think in many ways it’s the most interesting office in our political system not least because the president has the capacity to elevate some issues, shine a spotlight on causes and groups which don’t necessarily get the appropriate attention. I think it has at times subtle, legal and political dimensions that are taken for granted.”

Sources familiar with Duffy’s plans claim up to 15 councils are willing to nominate candidates. By law, councils must wait until Eoghan Murphy, the local government minister, moves the election writ, which is expected to be around August 28, before they formally nominate candidates.

Legal counsel for An Garda Siochana? – Hmm, i’ll take that with a pinch of salt.

…he’s not even the first FFer out of the stalls…we’re gonna need a bigger ballot paper…

always interesting to get an insight into the depth of delusion harboured by people like whelan

Ah – I doubt that he himself thinks that he will win it against Michael D. I am glad that there are a few people running; while Michael D. is grand and all, I hope that there won’t be a one candidate-coronation.

The self-regard and delusion is breathtaking. Still, aren’t we the Republic of Opportunity or something…

If I was to judge by appearance, I would guess he went in the backdoor to King’s Inns.

There’s not one of the touted candidates that I’d vote for over Michael D.

I fail to see the rationale for these people to run? Are they claiming it is some kind of selfless noble exercise? Is there an ulterior motive?
Apart from that, Gavin Duffy? Does he think people actually like him?
I have little time for Noel Whelan, he’s an apologist for all sorts of wrongs Fianna Faíl have done to this country but Duffy is just charmless in my opinion.
Then again that Sean Gallagher was the same and he was leading the last election until RTE through one of many spanners in the works. Helen Lucy Burke was another.
Having said all that I hope there is an election, it’s utterly meaningless but does get dirty every time as the grasping and desperation to get their noses in the trough shines through.

  7. Fair Dues

Barrister who is a paid writer for the Irish Times and a failed FF candidate; and whose wife is legal counsel for Twitter EMEA.

Duffy won’t run for anything in that shape.

  8. Bernie

John Finucane would make for an imposing, diligent and fresh-faced president. I hope that he is designated as Sinn Féin’s candidate, for the presidency run.
