The coin is  ‘the first in a series of coins, entitled Modern Irish Musicians, …’

Ultan Mashup writes;

Well deserved. If there aren’t Dolores O’Riordain and Sinead O’Conoor coins planned, I’m leaving. If there is a Ronan Keating one, I’m also definitely leaving…

As part of the new Modern Irish Musicians Series this coin will commemorate the 70th anniversary of Rory Gallagher’s birth in 1948. The coin will be launched in summer 2018 with an issue limit of 3,000 pieces. This will be the first coin in a three year series called ‘Modern Irish Musicians.’ The other coins in this series will be issued to honour Phil Lynott in 2019 and Luke Kelly in 2020.

Could get an absolute roasting for saying this, but a Dolores O’Riordan Coin really?

Obviously given her tragic death there’s extenuating circumstances, but are we not losing the plot about dolores a bit? She’s basically remembered for one song and that’s not exactly a wildean piece of writing. I know that zombie hit at a time when a lot of people were at that age where hit songs meant the world, but in terms of musical legacy compared to a Van or a Rory, the Cranberries output pales a little.

      Maybe.

      Maybe not.

Regardless, I’d suggest that nobody’s eligible for a coin/stamp/statue/having-stuff-named-after-you bobbins until/unless they’re at LEAST 10 years dead. Not to cast asparagus on Dolores but let’s just call it the Saville factor.

I’d have to agree but then the old chestnut of art vs the human pops up.

Is a stamp/coin/statue of John Lennon celebrating his art or his world view, which included wife beating.

also she was homophobic and xenophobic*. Hardly a fine representative of modern Ireland.

*allegedly (lest anyone wants to sue Broadsheet)

Mind you she contributed more to the arts that you did
I never liked her but her band were regarded great
I think Phil lynott is worthy of one
Anyway they are not legal tender
So her views on sexuality ?
Not everyone in Ireland is gay
And for a xenophobic person she certainly did a lot of travel
There are many Irish musicians that are worthy of a lasting memorial

can we have Michael Lowry coin, after all he’s awfully fond of them………
FG still ” reviewing ” those tribunal findings huh !

“It strikes me that Dooley’s warnings apply particularly to the interests of one person, reputedly Ireland’s richest man, Denis O’Brien. He is the major shareholder of Ireland’s largest newspaper company, INM, and owner of Communicorp, which owns all of Ireland’s independent national radio outlets apart from those run by state broadcaster RTÉ. In what is anything but a surprise to those of us who have scrutinised O’Brien’s affairs since he took his first stake in INM in 2006, he has finally found himself at the centre of a serious controversy.”

Can we not just focus on Rory’s utter brilliance on the guitar and his wonderful humble glorious self? His music will live on in the memories of those of us who were lucky enough to see him, and all those who listen to his work.

Completely agree. He was an absolute musical genius. The festival in Ballyshannon needs more advertising though. So many people have not even heard of him!!

Maybe it’s me, but that image of Rory is nothing at all like the image and memory I have of him. Of course it was a long time ago…

Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine better be in the queue for a coin.

Best (only) thing ever to come out of Cabinteely.
