Yesterday.

Near Croke Park, Dublin.

A rally to celebrate the choice of Munster MEP Liadh Ní Riada, the daughter of composer Seán Ó Riada above with Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald (right) as Sinn Féin’s candidate for the Presidential election.

Liadh Ní Riada talks Troubles, HPV vaccine and apology to Mairia Cahill in wide-ranging interview (Irish Examiner)

Meanwhile…

Austin Stack, whose father Brian died in hospital 18 months after he was shot in the neck by members of the Provisional IRA in 1983, said the MEP’s remarks about IRA atrocities and her membership of Sinn Féin made her entirely unsuitable for the role of president.

Ms Ní Riada previously caused controversy when she declined to call the IRA terrorists during an interview with ‘Hot Press’ magazine.

…Speaking last night, Mr Stack urged people to challenge her on the hustings.

Áras hopeful Liadh Ní Riada is ‘unsuitable to represent the country’ – says son of IRA victim (Independent.ie)

I see the Indo is ramping up the anti SF sentiment. Usual form. Haul out Son of Stack, and the dissident Cahill.

  2. Rob_G

I thought that she wasn’t going to get it after the Marian interview; they were definitely very quiet about the whole thing after the interview until now.

Listened to jimmy smith the musician from navan hoping to enter the race
The thing that got me thinking was his views that the Irish state is corrupt from top to bottom which many people would agree and the best thing to date by any candidate
REENACT ARTICLE 47 AND 48 OF OUR CONSTITUTION
which allows the public with a petition of several thousand by petition for the removal of a minister who is deemed unfit for office
Now imagine the republic where the people could of got rid of Fitzgerald Shatter and the others who clung on with their finger nails protected by government
Imagine Murphy gone imagine Harris gone
Good man jimmy smith you have my vote if you are allowed to stand
This is why its time all nominees should be allowed to stand without being nobbled by councils or politicians

          1. Giggidygoo

@ The Old Boy. Oh – that kind of crack? I thought a different one, and a pensioners Monday Soecial given your name.

          2. The Old Boy

A cracked hip? Crack cocaine? I had originally typed “a cheap shot” but thought it best avoided, in the circumstances. Alas, my pension plan at present involves dying on the job.

    1. Brother Barnabas

tell us, frillz – why did SF wait so long to nominate a candidate? surely she’s at a disadvantage now, no?

      1. ReproButina

Do you really think so? After weeks of the Dragons, the Iona puppet and the anti-vaxxer traipsing from council to council to publicly display their unsuitability, SF have arrived with a half decent candidate and made the contest interesting.

        1. Joe Small

I don’t think she’s half decent. She was considered an outside chance at the European Elections in 2014 after just 3 years in Sinn Féin. I’m not aware of any achievements since her election. Her dad was an Irish poet though. Sinn Féin know they can’t win so they’re just plugging a future Dáil candidate and taking advantage of the fact the FG and FF have no official candidates of their own.

          1. Giggidygoo

‘She was considered an outside chance at the European Elections in 2014 after just 3 years in Sinn Féin’
So how did that work out for her?

And nominee for party that still will not admit their past connections with terrorists
Who still will not reveal where the disappeared rest
      A party bathed with blood
And a party that refuse point blank to condemn the murder of the Miami show band
      Solid arty connection there

  3. Daisy Chainsaw

The backroom beards controlling the party choose another photogenic woman as a front. “Forget what we’ve done to get here. Look at the nice, respectable looking, woman who didn’t bomb or kneecap anyone, (but by her involvement condones it.)”

When they couldn’t get McGuinness into the Aras, I can’t see them getting someone relatively unknown in.

    1. Frilly Keane

That doesn’t become you ah’tall Daisy

Liadh is an MEP who delivers all her speeches in her mother tongue, Irish is her 1st language
and as you know the Euro Shinners are not involved in any Grouping out there
Liadh got elected with over 19% of the 1st preference vote. a shade under both (returning) Blueshurts, COMBINED, who both had to wait until the 12th count to get called.

Interesting thing about that election, Simon Harris was the 3rd Fine Gaeler on their ticket and missed out to Deirdre Clune by about four thousand votes in that last count

      1. Rob_G

“and as you know the Euro Shinners are not involved in any Grouping out there”

        – this is incorrect, they are part of the left-wing, eurosceptic GUE-NGL group.

        1. Joe Small

Yeah, along with the Danish People’s Movement against the EU , the French Communist Party and the Dutch Party of the Animals. Quite strange to see a nationalist movement stuck in there with the left wing loons but there you go.

          1. SOQ

Nationalism is not always right wing. SF are a left wing nationalist party which is quite common in ex colonies. It is a bit of a contradiction of course but also partly the reason why they are now the third largest party in ROI. There is a certain ‘all things to all men’ about them. One important point some people miss is that they block any far right equivalent from taking hold which in my mind is a very good thing.

      2. Dub Spot

Where’s the FG MEP Big Farmer candidate? Mairead McGuinness busy at the Ploughing Championship? Has she mentioned Republican Dissident Mairia “Vote for Joe, the Man You Didn’t Know” Cahill yet?

      3. Daisy Chainsaw

The Sinn Fein women may all have accomplishments the length of their arm, but in picking yet another woman for a leadership position, it smacks of another sanitising campaign. Get the “lovely girls” out front who never bombed or kneecapped anyone, no involvement in kangaroo courts and the disappeared, diesel smuggling, or political post office robberies, in other words no blood on their hands… but tacit support by their involvement in Sinn Fein for those who do.

    1. Giggidygoo

Today’s your lucky day. You have quite a few weeks to brush up on your politicians, and find out for yourself.

  4. Dub Spot

    Here come the FGBots.

BS: What do you think of the choice of Munster MEP Liadh Ní Riada?
    FGBot: Jerry McCabe
BS: Again, what do you think of the choice of Munster MEP Liadh Ní Riada?
    FGBot: Sinn Fein/IRA
BS: Are you a Fine Gael voter because your grand parents attended Blueshirt rallies and street agitation?
    FGBot: Er.,,,

    1. Rob_G

I am not sure I would vote for her based on the very unconvincing response when asked by Marian Finucaine if, as Uachtarán, would she be attending the official commemorations for the upcoming anniversaries for the War of Independence, or would she go instead to the SF-organised events, as was the case for the 1916 commemorations.

I think it should really be a prerequisite, for someone running for the office of the head of a state, that the candidate fully acknowledges the legitimacy of the state, which both SF & Liadh have a bit of a spotty record on.

      1. johnny

Have you ever noticed Rob,that when a yank company announces the opening of a new canteen for its workers, various ministers attend the photo-op,cut the ribbon..

Yet when a multi billion ‘investment’ in bad loans/house’s facilitated by FG, is made by a yank vulture fund there’s no photo op-or you know that big check moment, why don’t we see Leo getting handed a multi billion dollar BIG check for discounted irish state assets/houses/land,sold by FG ?

          1. Johnny

Thanks Rob,it’s so last year to bring up the fire sale off irish state assets (inc housing/land) in the midst off a housing crisis, caused by FG policies.
What do you think really happened to Shergar….is he/she on Twitter that was only in 1983 !
It’s as if FG is embarrassed, which is saying something, almost rude to the yank vulture funds to not lay on some “do”,few pics with ministers.billions off “Investments ” and no photos…..

          2. Johnny

Why won’t FG TD’s the attend the f***ing PAC meeting this Thursday,at which NAMA is due for the first time in almost 2 years !
FG TD’s have the worst attendance record at the PAC and block and tackle any questioning of NAMA-why ?
Ah cause of the Provo’s in the 1970’s …

          3. Cian

Really? The church bit is open to all. I’ve often seen neighbours, (not-so-close) friends, and childer at the church for a wedding ceremony.

          4. Johnny

C’mon Cian I can illustrate over 10 Billion in direct “investment” by non tax paying offshore yank vulture funds,in irish property/housing/land.
A software company announces 5 jobs and a million dollar expansion,it’s national “software co” day, with ministers wearing t-shirts,smiling and cutting ribbons.
Why are there NO houses-cause the RA blew them all up or FG flogged everything buildable to yank carpetbaggers…

          5. Cian

johnny, I’m not sure what your point is.
TDs are attracted to events that reflect well on them. They will shun those that don’t look good.

And the NAMA story is ‘bad’. It reminds people of ‘bad’ things.

And yes, can you provide me the list of “10 Billion in direct “investment” by non tax paying offshore yank vulture funds, in irish property/housing/land” please?

          6. rotide

I’m trying to work out what anything Johnny is talking about has to do with a SF MEP and her stance on state commemorations

          7. Giggidygoo

@ Cian. Yet. some TDs turn up to the venue where the afters of a funeral are held, but don’t when a wedding is held. As I said, weddings are invitation only.

But true enough – i buried some relative es in Kerry over the years, and when the Healy Rae’s couldn’t make it in person, they sent a ‘representative’. Uninvited (as you don’t issue invites for funerals), but the word was passed on ‘there’s the Healy Rae’s representative’. All hail the Healy Rae’s

  5. MaryLou's ArmaLite

She doesn’t think that the Bloody Friday, Warrington or the Birmingham pub bombings were terrorist attacks. Yikes

      1. MaryLou's ArmaLite

if she can’t call a terrorist attack what it was, a terrorist attack, she’s going to get eviscerated.

  6. johnny

Economy growing steadily. and rapidly at 9%,full employment and the govt can’t or wont create the environment to build housing-at what point like say when masked private security contractors are physically manhandling a couple off harmless students, will people will stop asking/obsessing about events that happened almost 30 years ago and question what’s going on NOW !

Why can’t a pro business govt get any housing built ?

Because off the IRA 40 yeas ago…………..

    1. Rob_G

Which party is the largest party on Dublin City Council, and chairs the Housing Committee, Johnny?

I’ll give you a hint: it starts with an ‘S’, ends with an ‘_inn Féin’

        1. johnny

Will Farrell bother showing up at the PAC,he has worst attendance record, will he be in court on another dubious insurance claim ?

Finn Gael values indeed, rip off insurance companies so rest have pay higher premiums. How can he possibly have any moral standing to question NAMA,when he was basically exposed as a fraud ?

“THIS is Fine Gael TD Alan Farrell up a ladder with a poster of himself during the time he claimed he suffered painful neck and shoulder injuries from a car accident caused by a spider.

Alan Farrell — who is an ally of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar — sued for up to €15,000 over a prang which a judge branded “very minor”.”

          https://www.thesun.ie/news/2827484/alan-farrell-fine-gael-td-photo-ladder-court/

          1. Rob_G

There is an element of truth in what you are saying – personally I think that the the powers for zoning land should be removed from local councils and given to the central govt (councilors can be have their voting influenced by a handful of NIMBY local objectors, I don’t think that they should be given the responsibility of deciding upon infrastructure projects of national importance).

Whenever SF are criticised on any point, you bring up bizarre non sequitors completely unrelated to the topic at hand. There are FG, FF and other councillors on DCC as well, of course, but during SF’s tenure as the largest party, DCC voted to reduce LPT (their principal source of revenue for things like council housing), and have not voted to zone many high-rise developments, so yes, I do indeed think it appropriate to shoulder some of the blame on the SF Lord Mayor, who is directly responsible for building housing in Dublin, as well as on the FG govt, who are also responsible in this area, but who can only influence it indirectly.

      1. MaryLou's ArmaLite

        shinnerbots assemble

        full attack on Rog_G

start with kneecapping and continue until he sees the light

      2. johnny

Rob-you got a economy that’s the envy of Europe, growing at almost double digit numbers, almost full employment, a pro business, pro development party in power ?

Are they just in power to inflate asset values, are they against development !

But you think its the DCC’s Lord Mayors fault that theres NO housing in Ireland, companies are reevaluating expansion/location decision due to the FAILURE of FG to provide either the environment or capital to build any.

Students are getting physically assaulted by hooded men, at the direction of FG not SF !

          1. Johnny

The election is about the future, perhaps when you are you lackeys start treating SF with the respect they have earned,I will indulge your nonsense a bit more.
Sinn Fein is real and has fielded a very credible candidate, where’s yours ?

          2. Rob_G

… and with a crashing of gears, he goes back from talking about housing, to talking about the presidential election again. Not responding to any of the points, of course; just with some empty platitudes.

            Never change, Johnny :)

          3. Johnny

Where’s your candidate Rob-your like an oul fella giving out bout every candidate, but not fielding one,the busses are a disgrace too……
            So where’s yours ?
            That’s fairly relevant don’t you think !

          4. johnny

so Rob just on this tread alone you’ve …..

“I think it should really be a prerequisite, for someone running for the office of the head of a state, that the candidate fully acknowledges the legitimacy of the state, which both SF & Liadh have a bit of a spotty record on.”

given the high esteem FG hold this office is and the absolute ‘take down’ you’ve done on all the other candidates,is it not a insult to that office to not even bother again, fielding a candidate ?

but you want sit it out from the sidelines, criticizing all the other ones, does not seem fair now does it, bit like the modern Ireland that FG is ‘building” a very unfair place!

Where’s your candidate then for the office you hold in such high esteem ?

(if some comments are duplicates/typos etc i’ve no edit function and i get heavily ‘moderated” so apols)

      1. johnny

        ….indeed you both are,misery loves company…….
your contribution today, congrats you ‘hit’ all these key words, your handlers will be pleased.

Imagine if GFA flounders during brexit
And Sinn feinn go back to the old ways
What then with a Sinn feinn president supreme leader of our armed forces
      Will the president be removed
If removed will president go willingly
Will president instruct as supreme leader of armed forces to support Sinn feinn/IRA campaign
Will the minister responsive for command of the armed force be able to command
And whose loyalty do these members of the armed forces lie
      Country or president
A scenario that is pretty unlikely but could be a distant reality but a possibility

      1. ReproButina

So you really are suggesting that a Sinn Féin president could order the defence forces to war with the UK over NI.

You’re completely and utterly clueless. No wonder your posts get deleted.
