Our daily dose of Gemma propaganda. Weird and pointless as her campaign is long over.
As much as you and the shutter downers would like to think Tom.
Democracy will prevail
Of course it will.
Just it will probably prevail without her
Regular commenter Tom, a stalwart of broadsheet.ie
:D
Tom, what would you know, time to have a woman at the wheel, we’ve had enough of your lot darling
A female president, what a novel idea..
you had it your way long enough baby
7 years? You lot had the previous 21
You know the president is not at the wheel of anything. Or even close to the wheel.
cognitive dissonance or maybe you’re ireland’s problem
If the councils are so corrupt would they not feel safer with Gemma as president. If she remains an investigative journalist she would be in a position to actually expose the corruption.
“Try a bit of sarcasm there lad, lets see if anyone falls for that” urged cian’s FG handler.
lol!
Ha haaaaa.
Why is this not on yet? I thought it started at 11.30?
Cian
In fairness I’d say the president of Ireland voted for by the people would have more of a voice than an award winning investigative journalist ignored by the establishment and their RTÉ media.
A journalist can actually investigate and publish and expose.
A president can’t.
you’ve obviously never been flashed at by mickey d
Is there still a genuine chance she can make the running?
No-she never had a chance, the whole thing was/is amateur hour from a organizational perspective, in other words-fail to prepare, prepare to fail.As if FG/FF/Lab were going simply going roll over and hand over the Aras, maybe if she said please !
Well done Broadsheet,I have enjoyed these and all best Gemma.
It’s a real pity, watching people tear her down because she’s not in the traditional mould for a president. I had and still have a number of questions and reservations about her, but I think she ought have been given more of a chance.
It’s such an Irish affliction, to be constantly crying out for change and yet viciously fighting and fearing it at the same time.
don’t get me started on the small mindedness looking over the garden wall mentality
As a long time critic of DOB and his business “activities”,there’s a certain-the enemy of my enemy is my friend-in my support for Gemma, but she’s certainly shook this place up !
But you don’t enter a ‘race’ and as your not doing too good, decide the rules need be changed, if she had the nominations how much about the ‘corrupt’ councils would we be hearing ?
But the backlash from within the journalistic community has been extreme, constanlty belittling here as a mere travel/features writer and mocking her-reflects very badly on them.
I don’t think anyone was belittling her as a ‘mere travel/features writer’, more pointing out that she’d spent most of her career as such, and hadn’t really registered on their radar as a hard-bitten investigative journalist.
Yeah like whatever-like the way they rallied around to support THE GOAT of irish investigate journalists-Frank Connolly.
Shameless plug, his NAMA book is updated and getting relaunched, fabulous read, but doubtless he will be all over the irish MSM plugging it !
Yes I agree MSM.I don’t live in Ireland, but I still cannot understand what she has done wrong. She has exposed wrongdoing in the Gardaí and unsolved murders etc.So what is it?
I don’t think going for the presidency is the the right way of exposing corruption. When compared with Duffy , Gallagher etc O’Doherty is light years ahead whichever way you look at it.I must be missing something. All I do know is that a lot of people get very exercised by her.
You could take the position she also exposed some ‘wrongdoing’ on here….
Shameful stuff from now a senior hack at the SBP,with Lyons/Guider and Kehoe when he was there endlessly promoting a disgraced, has been’s mindless musings.
If your not familiar with Frank,he is hands down the greatest investigative journalist in Ireland-Smyth can’t sharpen his pencil. His book is a fantastic, well written expose off NAMA,can’t recommend it highly enough, be great have him on the telly !
One the worst aspects off the whole Frilly,V, debacle is that Ken Foxes appearance has been overlooked, its really good.
“His comments follow Minister McDowell’s revelation yesterday that he had given documents to the Irish Independent for their story alleging that Frank Connolly had travelled to Colombia in 2001 on a false passport.”

Broadsheet, has this been rescheduled, please give us an update.
Seán, Rescheduled for 6pm. Very sorry.
Who wrote about her being a travel/features journalist?
Mick Clifford mentioned it in a piece that looked at her oeuvre.
I don’t know what a Gemma is.
I was in Dublin yesterday and happened upon the Duffy man. I have to ask, wtf. The man hasn’t a clue and is an embarrassment to himself and the office. What were the councils thinking in nominating him. He’s a plank. None of the council people should have been nominated. At least Gemma has given some service to society.
+ 100
He’s a wonderful man who dresses like a king and I would be happy to sit across a restaurant table from him, but the throne belongs to Gemma.
She is a smart and beautiful lady!
Our daily ‘Gemma’ promo slot. Have you considered asking the odd semi-challenging question?
Also, what is the interview count with prospective presidential nominees versus Gemma?
Hmm..
It would be nice if she was given the chance
Feeling proud to be Irish again
! Well done Broadsheet for getting honest politicians and a worthy candidate together for this hangout. Respect!
It’s clear the process is flawed and Gemma should be allowed to run. I wish, however, that she would stop speculating about the wishes of the dead – in her favour of course. She has no idea what Martin McGuinness or Fr Niall Molloy would have wanted and it’s disrespectful, not to mention self-serving, to drag them into it in this way.
I can see why she would be disappointed with the Social Democrats. Maybe BS regular Anne-Marie McNally could shed some light on their position. Good job all ‘round.
Jaysus, yer missing a brilliant Strictly!
I think this is why you are my favorite
Trinny has no rhythm… that was terrible, like he was dancing with a tree… bless… :)
As soon as I saw Anton’s costume, I knew she’d be a duffer.
I thought Anton’s exchange with Darcey was hilarious…
“maybe lose the props next time….”
“no no, we NEED all of the props”.
What was she thinking of going on the show, she walks like a baby with a dirty nappy.
I could go on and I haven’t even mentioned Claudia’s new hair do :)
Don’t know who she is but that red headed reporter has commited grand larceny on my heart. Not a bad dancer either
She’s no Angela Scanlon though….
That Kilkenny councillor wondered if President Michael D Higgins is a member of the Oireachtas. If he reads the Constitution he will learn that there are three houses of the Oireachtas – the Dail, the Senate and the office of the President. The Constitution states clearly that a serving President can nominate him/herself as a candidate (and no other candidate); twenty members of the Dail & Senate can nominate a presidential candidate; and four local authorities can vote to nominate a candidate.
Hang on a minute! I know this is preposterous… but…
Is it just me (puts down Prosecco) or could Gemma O’Doherty and John Ryan actually be the same person?
Ever seen them in the same room together?
Compare pics: https://www.broadsheet.ie/2018/09/21/that-seemed-to-go-well-11/
Could explain a lot…
No more drink for you.
Meanwhile, over at the British Labour conference…
One of Corbyn’s aides introduces him as “the next prime minister of a socialist Britain”.
John McDonnell… “The solution is a Labour government, but a Labour government that delivers our dream. And that dream is this – a socialist in No 10… and if he makes the right appointment, hopefully a socialist in No 11.”
“We should be very wary of becoming a middle-class, pro-Remain, pro-EU party.”… em… Corbyn is middle class and privately educated, as was McDonnell…
Do as we say, not as we do… I guess.
Harold Wilson, an Oxford degree, was in Number 10 in the 1960s. He called himself a socialist – and so did Bertie Ahern in Merrion Street thirty years later. De Valera in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, incidentally, called himself an Irish nationalist. His enemies called him something else.
Like those on the Right, it’s all about being in control, and power.
World Bank: In 1990 China had 750m in poverty… in 2015 it was down to 10m… and socialism had nothing to do with that.
It’s interesting to compare the divergent paths of India and China over that period.
…never thought about it.
Found this… Yikes!
https://youtu.be/DRBxqDuPei4
I imagine it’s a centralised unified China versus… India with multi states, multi state govt’s of different types, multi lingual…. off the top of me head like….
Oh… man, good memories coming to me, oh, to be back in 2000 and 4 months pottering about India on $15 a day… Doubt you could do it that cheap now… :) Never did make it to Oz…hah! Still… had good times… but could only afford to fly as far as London on the way back… got the lads, good mates, to wire me some cash to get the rest of the way home, all paid back of course !
“We should be very wary of becoming a middle-class, pro-Remain, pro-EU party.”… em… Corbyn is middle class and privately educated, as was McDonnell
I think he means more that the Labour Party should be wary of exclusively appealing to or only representing the views of the “middle-class, pro-Remain, pro-EU” section of the UK electorate
Tony Benn and Michael Foot were Oxford educated. It’s what they say and do that counts not their background
…Tony Benn was hereditory peer Anthony Wedgewood Benn before he disowned the title and truncated his name…his son looks like restoring it…Corbyn should get rid of him instead of pandering…
G’wan Miggledee …instructing that no charges be pressed on trespasser :)
Isn’t that interfering with the justice system?
The views of the victim are taken into account when deciding whether or not to charge someone.
The trespasser doesn’t appear to have committed any criminal offence.
As decided by?
That would be a matter for the senior investigating officer in a case of this nature.
Trespass, breaking & entering?
Simple trespass isn’t an offence. She didn’t break and enter, (assuming the accuracy of the reports) she walked through an open door straight past security.
> Recorded LIVE
is there another way to record things?
from the department of redundancy department
Thanks, Shortforbob, fixed now. Sorry.
Hah, reminds of the time I went to. EP on a Sunday morning with no ticket… walked up and down the street with a sign on my back “ticket wanted… will pay cash”
Every lad in Portlaoise had a smart reply for me :) Still tho… I got one in the end !
All credit to John Ryan for doing this. The way in which some councils have tried to block Gemma says it all. Even in just trying to get on the ticket she has shook it up.
she totally has, a marker has been laid down
I still don’t know what a “Gemma” is.
A ‘Gemma’ is an entity which instigates change by it’s very physical presence. It has an inquiring outlook and is feared by criminals, cliques, cabals and other generally dodgy people. It may even recreate the ‘Streisand effect’ once electable.
Hope that helps.
I’m lucky I don’t spend every waking minute online. Thankfully 95% of Ireland doesn’t live in a mental bubble of conspiracy theories and paranoia. But you do you. It’s all you have.
Gemma can leave the stage now.
Neither do I so don’t make assumptions about me or my life thanks. Although, there are some who appear to be paid to do so.
Thing about conspiracies is that sadly, now and again, they are right, McCabe being an example. Gemma has asked some very valid questions about how the candidates are picked. She is standing on an anti corruption platform and nobody else was blocked, any idea why that was? Like many others, I am interested in knowing the answer.
+100
Fair enough for BS/John Ryan for hosting this. Still holding out for a Bunty special.
Also being driven nuts by trying to recall the name of restaurant sign outside John’s window. I know it… I know it… “Stop The Lights” (Too soon?)
