Canada has became the first major world economy to legalize recreational marijuana use, beginning a national experiment that will alter the country’s social, cultural and economic fabric, and present the nation with its biggest public policy challenge in decades.
Across the country, government-run stores were preparing to greet consumers, who will be able to choose among pre-rolled joints, fresh or dried marijuana flowers and cannabis oil — all of which are permitted under the new federal law.

Genuine Question, should we legalise or at least decriminalise Drugs in Ireland? I’m for yes given the taxation and remove of illegal components….only a matter of time?
Legalize, regulate and tax is the only way forward. Habitual addicts taken off the streets to secure medical facilities but treated as being ill as opposed to criminals, massively increased penalties for illegal trafficking and so on. We might need to cultivate a heroin poppy crop but as it can also be used for medical grade diamorphine that’s a bonus. Some study find that pure, medical grade heroin in decreasing doses can be very effective in treating addiction but the reality is that addiction is merely a symptom of an emotional and/mental health issue and we know how low the state values mental health services. Having a chat with your mother in the car is hardly an effective treatment for the type of issues that lead to heavy addiciton.
Or we can just stick with our current laws as they stand, much more likely.
+1 not sure about the poppy fields but yes on legalization, regulation, taxation and rehabilitation.
It would be a great way to get the youth back into agriculture and rural Ireland… Imagine all the budding entrepreneurs

The impact of legalised weed will be much more than that. People will still need to socialise but it is bound to hit alcohol sales which in turn will mean less social issues like violence.
It will be interesting to see if people’s taste in music alters to any extent in Canada now

A far less dangerous drug than alcohol, also very popular worldwide. It makes total sense to legalise it, financially, from new Tax gains to ending the War on drugs (most wasteful war ever, no impact) therefore doubling the financial gains.

First step is to legalize medical use under strict criteria, then relax or loosen these, medical marijuana is legal in 31 states in the US,rec in 7 soon to be 9-Nov ballots.

Well done Canada,come on Ireland time join the modern world.Its a great industry with mainly eco/green alternative types involved, utilizing state the art green buildings and energy systems.Ireland has it all to be a major player in the EU in this industry and should not blow this once in a lifetime opportunity
