I’m in my 40’s now and as long as I can remember this has been a game of cat and mouse all my life, one the cat never wins. You’d think the penny would drop and somebody in officialdom would come up with a plan to have an organised bonfire event. No matter if the S.A.S was deployed tonight there’d still be fires and fireworks everywhere.

But there are organized bonfire events. Dublin City Council and South Dublin Council host them for sure (no doubt the other two do too) and they are great; Halloween costume competitions, jugglers, bonfire, supervised fireworks etc. Take a gander online and you’ll find your nearest one. It’s the gougers who do their own fires and act the maggot.

Ah that’s too simple. They’re not all “gougers” They’re kids, who by accident more than design, are continuing the long held tradition of lighting a fire on halloween night. The majority are free spirited and mean no harm whatsoever. That some of those involved are thugs is unfortunate but they’re simply hijacking what is essentially a disorganised but jovial bit of fun, dangerous as it might be. There has never been any organised event in any of the various towns I’ve lived in in Ireland. What are the kids going to do? They’re Going to arrange their own fire thats what. Its not going to stop and so long as a proper local event isn’t arranged in every town then we’ll just have a continuation of willie heads ruining everyone else’s fun.

I looked everywhere online last night for an official SDCC bonfire and don’t seem to be doing one. Some bull crap face paints etc during the day in a school car park, that’s it.
They have some thing going on, that if you rat the kids out, you get ‘social credits’ which can be used to get daffodil bulbs.

Following meetings with the Gardai, Fire Brigade, Community & Parks Department, Environmental Services, Civil Defence , Estate management, and local residents it is proposed to arrange three official organised bonfires on Halloween night, Tuesday 31st October, two in West Tallaght (Drumcairn Avenue and Kilcarrig Close) and one in North Clondalkin (Letts Field, Neilstown Road).
It might also be an idea to offer payment for pallets during the week coming up to 31 October. Kind of like those gun exchange things.

Think that might be from last year as it references Tuesday 31st as Halloween. The county councils are notorious for leaving old content up. Best ring them I suppose, or whatever council you’re in. I was at the Letts Field event one year and it was well-organised, safe and good oul craic. About 500 metres away there was an UNOFFICIAL fire where people were either out of their faces or dragging sofas and mattresses on to the flames – mainly both. Have fun and be safe out there y’all.

With any luck, it will pish rain all evening and these bonfires will be damp squibs… or squids if they’re in costume.

tonight marks the official end of the ditch drinking season. you’d be an awful wagon to deny the younguns their last blow out before the long slog of winter and the promise only of exams at the end of it.

At least they aren’t burning radiators! When I first came to Dublin in 2006, I was shocked to see the state of the green at Dolphin Rd the day and months after. Salt of the earth.
