Abortion: I get that some doctors may have a problem prescribing pills but when all is said and done, they are not actually administering the drug, the patient is. Those who refuse to refer a patient onto another should be sacked because in their professional capacity they do not have the right to force their views onto others.

How does this work in other countries?

I can understand the doctor’s concern.

If I had a friend that was suicidal – and I knowingly provided them with the means to kill themselves – would I be (in any way) culpable for their death? Even if I wasn’t there when they actioned their death?

Saying that, I believe that all doctors should refer their patient (along with any relevant medical notes) to a doctor that will provide the abortion. And the 2nd doctor should return updated records to the original doctor (assuming the woman gives explicit consent) so her medical file is complete.

      1. Andrew

Well you as a friend, wouldn’t be criminally liable Cian unless you had expressly taken duty of care of your friend.
Different legal rules apply to a doctor or indeed a blood relative

How can any doctor recommend the destruction of a perfectly healthy baby in the womb of a healthy mother and not violate the Hippocratic oath?

“I will use treatment to help the sick according to my ability and judgment, but never with a view to injury and wrong-doing. Neither will I administer a poison to anybody when asked to do so, nor will I suggest such a course. Similarly I will not give to a woman a pessary to cause abortion. But I will keep pure and holy both my life and my art.”

      1. Rob_G

I am pretty sure that doctors no longer swear to:

“… keep pure and holy both my life and my art.”

        – anymore, either.

        1. Is A ____

Look at you twisting meaning so you can be ok with the destruction of human life.

Just like “abortion is healthcare” or “collateral damage”

          Do you feel clever?

If you are clever then tell me why you expect doctors to sign off on the destruction of human life in the womb?

          1. ReproButina

You’re the one twisting meaning to try and equate the combination of a pair of cells to a baby.

          2. Is A ____

A pair of cells? At 10 weeks a baby in the womb looks like this:

            https://youtu.be/SdXfTqBS-9E?t=22

Much more than “a pair of cells”

But that’s the reality you must deny in order to support the destruction of human life in the womb.

Next you’ll be trying to argue that a pre-natal baby is not human.

Ah, here comes my favorite purveyor of the ‘truth’, with more nourishing food for thought.

I’m sure it has as much intellectual value as candy floss.

          4. SOQ

@ Is A. The country voted in large numbers to legalise abortion so that argument has been won.

The issue is not about the rights and wrongs of abortion anymore but if a woman can have confidence that her doctor will provide the impartial advice and services that they are contracted to.

It is hard enough having to make that sort of decision without somebody else throwing their own baggage on top of it.

Warfarin is a poison people take it every day to live. By prescribing it, are doctors breaking their oath?

        1. DeKloot

Indeed . Further, in palliative care and as a person’s morphine dose is increased, it is in essence euthanasia… Medicine’s worst kept secret.

Unusually for the Irish Times it actually prints a letter critical of its relentless anti-Brexit coverage.
Perhaps it has learned a lesson or two from the hostile reaction among England’s Irish community for printing a diatribe from some snowflake about how she hates living in the country where she makes her living.
Or maybe it is only just waking up the EU’s real intentions.

But didn’t Leo and his merry band of Muppets in Government tell us there will be no backstop or borders? The EU leopard never changes it’s spots and like before with the banking fup up Ireland will be shafted… Meanwhile Leo is off busy attacking the frontline health service workers… He is an embarrassment to this country.. they all are.

    1. ReproButina

“But didn’t Leo and his merry band of Muppets in Government tell us there will be no backstop or borders?“

No. The government has been working to keep the backstop in the Withdrawal Agreement. The Brits want it removed or given a deadline but the EU27, rather than shafting Ireland, are not budging on what was signed up to last December.

The backstop prevents a border on the island of Ireland. It’s really not difficult to understand.

      1. SOQ

The Irish government who have been consistent throughout with full support from all opposition parties get criticised while the chaos continues across the water.

Bizarre logic to say the least.

        1. ReproButina

There seems to have been a discussion over the soup about how the Irish government are to blame for the Sasamachs not knowing what they want, not knowing how to get it and not knowing the repercussions of getting it.

An update on yesterday’s Union Jack and the Beanstalk ” forecasts. ”
GDP figures out today show that Britain’s economy is growing at nearly three times the rate of the Eurozone.
Q3 figures which I estimated yesterday would be at around 0.4% were actually up to 0.6%,the fastest growth in two years. The stagnating Eurozone had Q3 growth figures at a measly 0.2%.
These are real facts, not drum-banging,EU,away with the birds ” forecasts. “

      1. ReproButina

This presumes that people were unaware of the reality of the slowdown in the Eurozone, or even gave a damn about the actual data as opposed to just enjoying a chuckle at the UK’s growth forecast.

The EU has been predicting continued slowdown for quite some time due to concerns about Trump’s trade wars, the impact of Sasamach and the spend happy Italian government. It’s not news to most people.

Digicel DeathWatch:Latest bond swap deadline is Nov 16th.
Does Dennis have the EQUITY ?
The bad news for Dennis O’Brien is that the once extremely supportive local press in many of his markets have turned hostile. This is a result of savage cutbacks in staffing levels and poor service,Digi’s local charitable presence due to mismanagement and a reckless dividend policy have also been cutback.

“The group, though still market leaders in many of its markets, is not the force it once was. Its data package was overpriced, its main competitor is now re-energised and is clawing back market share, and its new senior management team has to do some extensive tinkering under the hood. I think it may well have to look to a further equity injection, but whether O’Brien is inclined to do so is anyone’s guess.

“Revenues are falling (for the first fiscal quarter to the end of June, total revenues declined by six per cent to US$565 million, with a nine per cent fall in voice and data sales) and its leverage is around 6.5 times its adjusted earnings. The question for the bondholders is, do you see the writing on the wall and cash in now, or do you have faith in Digicel who has proven its dynamism and ability to dominate its markets and so give it a chance to do so again?”

The question everyone is asking is will he be flogging his new venture Deep Blue Cable which sounds like a cheesy gay porn flick or Deep Red Digicel, which is most likely too seek protection from its creditors via a bankruptcy filling.
