The motion tabled before Dublin City Council by Green Party Councillor Ciaran Cuffe reads:

That the ‘green man’ period at pedestrian signals throughout the city centre be increased by one second in order to better facilitate more vulnerable road users who would benefit from additional crossing time.”

    Seems everything this guy suggests is manically anti-car, a complete zealot. He even scolded a friend of mine in case he was even *thinking* of creating a oarking space out of his garden during renovation work

        are there fewer light changes per day?
        is it taken from the traffic green-time?
        do we take it from the all-the-lights-are-red-and-someone-somewhere-is-breaking-the-lights?

          They’re talking Daylight Savings Time, chopping it up into seconds, and inserting each one into traffic signals all over the city.

    Pedestrian crossings need to activate with less interval between successive green-men. Its the long wait for the green man to activate that’s causing pedestrians to take chances, not how long he’s green for.

      This. You have to wait far too long at a crossing far too often. Cars should be last in the priority. If traffic builds, so be it, but pedestrians should have priority to cross at all times.

      Particuly in wet, cold, miserable depths of winter. You can conceivably be standing out in the rain for 3-5 mins waiting for the sequence to get around to being allowed to cross the road. We need to allow diaganol crossing too.

      That said. Have you ever hit the button outside Leinster House. Instant green man.

        That’s absolute rubbish, just like Councillor Cuffe. As a driver, cyclist and pedestrian, there is no pedestrian crossing in the city that takes 3-5 minutes to cross. 1 second will make no difference to these forms of transport. Why are are elected reps making such nonsense claims.?

        In any event, drivers are the only people who seem to stop at red lights, as opposed to cyclists and pedestrians. Guilty of the latter 2.

      Our local lights take 2.5 minutes to cycle through four changes. The pedestrian light goes green for seven seconds then orange for seventeen, which is ok for locals, but I’ve seen old people who don’t know them fleeing back when the light goes orange and then eventually trying to hobble across amid the speeding traffic after they despair of ever getting a solid green.
      It’s important to design streets for the decrepit and disabled as well as for the young and strong.

    Does Mr Cuffed know there are pedestrian lights on the Malahide Rd
    running at 30 seconds ? If it gets any slower we might as well just move the bed into work

    What pedestrian crossings need is a button that feels like it’s doing something when pressed. I’d like a big gear /cog sounding click followed by a ticker and flashy lights.
    Those steel things that people repeatedly bash are a nonsense

    No issues from dublincycling, sure why would there be when the vast majority of cyclists don’t stop at red lights or have the basic knowledge required to obey the rules of the road

      I see as many cyclists as motorists run red lights every day while sitting at red lights…not bothered by them no?, Cyclists are the real problem and threat to life.

        No but considering they’re some of the most vulnerable road users, it would help if they obeyed rules of the road. You know, the basic ones that we teach kids. Red traffic light means stop, green means go.

        I tend to cycle with my kid on the back of the bike, so the thing I am most conscious if is how vulnerable we are. As a cyclist, I see a lot more cyclists breaking the lights than cars, which just seems so wilfully stupid to me.

    Whatever happened to operation free flow? I remember there being a Garda on every junction which seemed to make everyone obey the rules of the road. When everything was working properly, journey times improved because junctions weren’t blocked by cars in yellow boxes, running orange and red lights etc. No pedestrians ran out into the road or cyclists going through intersections and the like. I think all the city needs is the traffic corps to actually police the city’s traffic. A few months of fines and stern talking to would make a world of difference.
