That’s for locking the differential, it would have low and high differential gears like most proper off road motors.

ah. diesel G-Wagens (esp the 300GD) were once fairly gettable/affordable…one of those “Q cars” definitely superior to a Defender….until Mike Brewer/Ed went & spoiled that by doing an episode dickying one up for Wheeler Dealers…since then RHD ones have been getting impossible money, Merc even started remaking them but they look very bodykit tacky
