I spent a summer in France once. The only English show they had on with subtitles was Taggart so I watched a lot of it. It’s a great show.

It’s well known that in the late 70’s and early 80’s New York Deli’s, not yet famous for their pizzas or massive sandwiches, used to specialise in meatballs made from minced off-cuts and offal (especially pork) together with herbs for flavouring and sometimes added bread crumbs (a cross between a meatloaf and a meatball). These were termed faggots and were a lunchtime favourite for New Yorkers. To serve a mediocre or substandard plate of this delicacy was detrimental to your business and if your restaurant and deli had “lousy faggots”, you might as well close your doors. Plus it rhymes well in a song as we all know nothing rhymes with meatball.

Fascists get their name from bundles of reeds called fascia, which some roman bloke once used to demonstrate the concept of strength in numbers to his troops.
Shane McGowan grew up in North Tipperary, where i went to school when the song came out, and when I was being called a fag and a faggot routinely they weren’t calling me a mediocre New York deli dish or a bundle of sticks. The word is used in the song as a homophobic insult, and that’s okay, it’s a pair of drunks having a screaming match on a street. It’s a dark song that seeks to humanise some of society’s dregs, the use of the word is justified as it would be in a book or play as dialogue that portrays any kind of casual racism, homophobia, misogyny. But now that the song is a sentimental favourite everyone wants to smooth down its darker edges and blame it on PC gone mad. It’s one thing to change the word, that’s honest at least in its intentions, but to start pretending it wasn’t then and isn’t now a homophobic insult? Feck off.
Some niggling memory is telling me faggots were Wales/Yorkshire based meatballs in gravy.
