I came here to read the comments re the Sunday business post’s front cover. Why haven’t you included it? Surely it’s an early Xmas pressie?

    1. Bodger

Dhod, they don’t send it to us although we have asked many, many Saturday nights. They post it on twitter but very small. We must wait until it appears on their epaper which we have subscribed to. Such is the monumental pettiness of some of the mainstream press.

      1. Dhod

Of course. Well, keep doing what you’re doing. You have stuck to your guns over the years despite pressure from redacted. I know BS is probably not the most financially viable thing in the world but I think it’s important to keep shouting and exposing the truth.

      1. Eoin

        Shurrup you.

If you look carefully at the front page of the SBP today (now printed above), you will see it is dated “9-10 December 2018”, so, not only is the SBP today’s news today, but it’s tomorrow’s news today, and your suggestion it’s last Wednesday’s news today must therefore be very wide of the mark indeed.

(in case this well-intentioned bantz isn’t translating well, you’re right of course, though the Sunday Times isn’t much better as it’s put to bed on Friday generally , and it’s really just the Indo and Mail that are scrambling around on Saturdays to fill their front pages).

    2. Eoin

You honestly haven’t missed much Dhod, but I know that’s not your point.

Seems to me, the remaining SBP journalists are going through the motions and no more, you’ll find many of the journalists articles are re-reporting of last week’s news. The army of columnists giving their opinions of the world continue to swell.

No problem and apols for any confusion-I’m heavily moderated/restricted on here due to my salty language and low tolerance for fools and trolls-you know who you are !

So on weekends when the team here are correctly enjoying their weekend,I don’t bother trying post as they never appear or if they do it’s hours later.

Eoin has been doing sterling work highlighting the risk to the 450 jobs in Limerick,in the “aluminum” factory -who’s owner has been in the press a lot over here due to Manford.

That’s a link to a source document-outlining the state of play at Treasury.

At least it’s not in French – omg :)
            Vive la révolution!

          2. rotide

            in the “aluminum” factory

Any particular reason for the quotation marks here?

Are they really manufacturing mind control agents?

        1. Eoin

Thanks Johnny, it’s 6+ months since the sanctions were announced; if Deripaska can’t convice US authorities he’s divested from Rusal in that period and with the might of the British elite doing his bidding in Washington, then we’re really just counting down the clock. Deripaska’s only real option is to sell Rusal to another aluminum giant. I don’t think he’s flexible enough to do that.

Will keep an eye out for anything from DC-as it’s a beautiful Sunday, let’s take a moment and spare a thought for this chap-who spent between 10,000,000 and 25,000,000 for this photograph-many have suggested it was simply another awful investment.

I’m also surprised at RTE’s decision to replace Martina Fitzgerald at Leinster House. Her reports are generally very good. What next? Orla O’Donnell to be displaced by Nicky Byrne? Disappointed for Fitzgerald.

    1. Eoin

Front page news for the Mail on Sunday (what, did their Garda contacts not give them more dirt on that family in Longford?) and the Irish edition of the Sunday Times?

I thought of Broadsheet’s precient recent article title “She Moved Through the Dail” – she certainly did!

      https://www.broadsheet.ie/2018/10/17/she-moved-through-the-dail/

Of course, there’s still a gaggle of female RTE political correspondents, isn’t Katie Hannon the political correspondent for Prime Time, what about Ailbhe Conneally and there’s another three whose names escape me.

Storm in a teacup which would hardly merit inclusion on a roundup of the week.

    2. Amorphous Kerry Blob

Interesting subject to parse. I agree with you about Fitzgerald. She seemed to be quite competent as a journalist, although I’m open to being corrected on this. (BTW did she previously host the Late Debate on Radio One before Katie Hannon? If not, who was that? She was excellent.)

And even if you disregard how good she is/was in the role, I’m surprised RTE management didn’t see the potential ‘bad optics’ of replacing Fitzgerald with a fella, considering that RTE news seem to me to be heavy on the #METOO spiel.

Also, I kinda feel sorry for the guy taking on her role.
Not sure what the journalistic competency of Paul Cunningham is, but I don’t think yer regular decent person deserves their promotion to be tainted in such a way. This decision by management will make him look like a ‘boys club usurper’, arguably.

But then again, why shouldn’t they make the decision? Haven’t RTE a good few high profile ladies, some of them recently promoted? I’m speaking of the great Keelin Shanley and the blonde co-presenter I’m not so fond of.

An interesting one to parse. I suppose if Cunningham turns out to be the better reporter, than fair enough. No pressure Paul.

      1. Fact Checker

Pol corrs writing stories about HR issues for other pol corrs. The shark really has been jumped.

Ms Fitzgerald is of course a thorough professional, but there are far too many journalists floating around Leinster House (in rent-free offices) writing up gossip.

RTÉ should take a lead and take resources out of Leinster House and put it into investigative work – something they are actually good at.

  3. Clampers Outside!

Kevin Hart already apologised. Fair play to him for walking away from the Oscars and giving two fingers to the eternally offended who demanded further apologies for s*** he said pre-2011.

    1. realPolithicks

It’s comical to see you talking about the “eternally offended” Clampers, you’re one of them.

      1. Clampers Outside!

Nah, that’s just another of those half-baked notions you have, like the many you have expressed before, in mistaking argument of a point for offence. And of course, that is your opinion, and you have every right to have it, good lad.

          1. Clampers Outside!

Again, that’s just an opinion, others may disagree :)

            Nite nite realP,
            ’til morning!

          1. Clampers Outside!

            Oh, yes they do :)

Could this be a panto thread, I never did value panto… I guess that hasn’t changed, so you have me there.

But, no seriously, many values do change with age, life circumstances, and general life experiences.

          2. Steph Pinker

Don’t let it rent space in your head Clampers: to paraphrase a quote from Wilde; cynics know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

    2. Junkface

I can’t believe how quickly the “offended by everything” brigade attacked Hart, frantically searching his twiiter history. I mean he’s a comedian, of course all comedians have said crazy stuff in the past! Thats how they turn heads, climb the ladder in their careers. You have to be able to offend someone, somewhere to be funny. Humorless puritans are ruining show business.

    1. Cian

Not exactly a great bunch to choose from. And when you need to balance both gender and geography… we need better TDs

  4. SOQ

So, May’s deal heading for defeat. Small to medium means she has some possibility of staying, large and she is definitely gone. The timeline is interesting. How long has she had the legal advice meaning how long has she been stringing the DUP along? And if it is a moderate defeat what happens then? Does she go back to the EU or is it another referendum?

One thing is for sure, this coming week will go down in history. The most interesting comment I read recently was that the two sides are arguing about different things. With Leave it is an ideology about taking back control etc while with Remain it is about the economics and practicalities. Maybe the run up to another vote will change that.

And just if I can make a point about immigration from Eastern Europe. From my personal experience, apart from maybe the Bulgarians, these people are here to work, they are definitely not lazy. And while there may be cultural and language differences, there is another reason why some people feel uncomfortable. They are poor, in some cases very poor, and we don’t like the contrast because it proves that most of us are not nearly as badly off as we think.

      Tell me it is satire:
“My leaver friends are compassionate and outward-looking people, fond of Europe and its wonderful cultures, but critical of the ambitions of a weakly democratic and economically under-performing EU. ”

The writer of this is mixing with a strange set of Brexiteers. He must outward-looking as in looking to blaem someone outside of Britain.

Yeah, leaving a market where you sell 45% of your goods is a great idea.
Btritain has one of the weakest democracies in the EU – what % did the Tories get and what % of seats did that result in?

      1. Ollie Cromwell

It doesn’t take 10 weeks to form a government that leaves its country with no effective opposition.
        Heh,heh,heh.

  5. Eoin

Sunday Business Post, blue Hugh reports Mary Mitchell O’Connor may be the FG candidate in next May’s European Parliament elections for the Dublin constituency (replacing Brian Hayes who’s going to be lobbying for Irish banks).

    1. bisted

…if that line-up of TDs and ministers were calling for your head it would be a better testament for a political journalist…

      1. millie st murderlark

Such a nice, well-meaning individual, aren’t you topsy?

You have a pleasant Sunday now pal.

    1. Lilly

I was sitting beside her a few years ago on a flight and she was reading total tat; the Star and one of those mags that you wonder who reads, Take a Break or some such. She seemed nice though.

    1. rotide

Posting a french language video and saying ‘this says it all’ is approaching Louis LeFronde levels of pretension

      1. Janet, I ate my avatar

Attempts at translation do not do justice to the song.
It suggests the threatening undercurrents that lurk beneath the facade of life in France, the dangerous nationalism, corrupting power of money and the disregard for the noble values of the country.
The song sounds dark and threatening, like a gathering storm.
I just thought it rather suited the mood.

    1. Janet, I ate my avatar

      I shall survive :)
music and images without exact understanding of a language can speak for themselves
It’s about how beautiful Paris is when the the birds sing,
the birds being the common man who believes in equally fraternity and freedom

    2. Janet, I ate my avatar

and maybe he’s right, maybe I am pretentious, I have been dancing to a different beat for 18 years and I often miss a step ;)

      1. bisted

…so you’re pretentious because you speak more than one language…you’re pretentious because you offer an analysis based on a finger on the pulse rather than having your head up a media owners bum…

        1. rotide

Как обычно друг, вы полностью упускаете из виду то, что ваши игроки пытаются сказать. As they might whisper in heavy smoke infused inns on the baltic coast Bisted

      2. realPolithicks

I don’t think you’re being pretentious Janet, I seem to recall you saying that you live/lived in Paris and I believe that living in another country can give you a different perspective on things both home and abroad. Btw I don’t mean a better perspective, just a different one.

        1. Janet, I ate my avatar

thanks bisted and realP :) appreciate that, it certainly wasn’t what I was aiming for
It’s so disturbing to see the violence and atmosphere, however unsurprising.

      3. rotide

In fairness, I wasn’t really calling you pretentious, merely pointing out that its broadsheet.ie not .fr and a large proportion of people wouldn’t have a breeze what your point was :)

      4. SOQ

This is all clearly because of the immigrant obviously. Seriously Janet, what was the government’s argument for increasing fuel tax?.

Or was it just like here with cigarettes? Because they need to keep in step with the British for some odd reason

        1. Janet, I ate my avatar

the argument ti the steep hike was to find a cleaner solution,
it’s the straw that’s breaking the camel’s back, it’s not about that anymore, that was more of a catalyst

          1. Clampers Outside!

What’s not mentioned is massively obvious… immigration.

And the UN Migration Pact is to be agreed tomorrow in Morocco, and all against the wishes of the majority of Europeans… hmmmm…

Looks like the hacking of records belonging to 19 staff at INM in 2014 is just the tip of the iceberg.

Former Sindo editor Anne Harris is now saying “I was informed by INM management that my emails had been accessed without reference to me, without any authorisation from me in the spring of 2013”

Someone (unnamed for the time being) ordered the hacking of the Sindo editor’s records to track down the leaking by someone at INM to the Irish Times of the controversial, and ultimately abandoned, editorial charter which said in general terms that INM journalists were not to negatively focus on any one individual; Denis O’Brien wasn’t specifically referred to in the charter but everyone knew it referred to reporting about him.

And separately, in 2015, someone (unnamed for the time being) ordered the hacking of the records of “five or six” journalists who were suspected of leaking an embarrassing internal INM email about a forthcoming autobiography by Richard Desmond, the pornographer who also owned the Express and, in Ireland, a 50% stake in the Daily Star (the other 50% was owned by INM).

These two incidents, which have come to light during the Data Commissioner’s investigation at INM, are separate to the hacking in October 2014 when INM data was sent over to Wales for “interrogation” to find out if there were references to 19 named individuals.

Looks like snooping/hacking at Ireland’s biggest newspaper business INM was routine.

And did we ever get to the bottom of who ordered the tailing and surveillance of the former INM CEO Gavin O’Reilly?
