Credit where it’s due…[last night’s] RTÉ Investigates [on anabolic steroids] was public service broadcasting at its best… I think it will change the whole culture around steroid use among young men in Ireland..It was well-researched and pretty terrifying for any parent… I have an idea who the social influencer [mentioned during the show] could be but does anyone know why they weren’t named?

Anyone?

Why replace the correct word for this part of the anatomy with ‘old chap’?
I really despair at what people think are taboo words.

Yes, the ‘fake natties’ on instagram and youtube giving young men and women unrealistic goals. Huge issue at the moment, and well hidden too. Scary stuff

I know someone who used to use steroids. He’s 54, and has a colostomy bag.Hard t know if his prostrate cancer had anything to do with his steroid use but at his age, it is a hell of a coincidence.

Made for interesting viewing. Fair play to the ordinary punters who spoke on camera about their experiences.

Two thoughts: This is nothing new. Like SOQ above, I’ve known guys involved in purely recreational sport who were openly injecting twenty years ago.

Secondly, forget IG influencers. The biggest influencers in the Irish media are pro rugby players. The idea that menus of drugs are available in every gym in the country, except the ones rugby players use doesn’t seem credible to me. As Declan Lynch wrote in the Sindo a while back, these guys are so heavily muscled now that they may have actually evolved into a different species. It’s that obvious. I don’t see how you can complain about teenagers pumping up for selfies while putting rugby on a pedestal and not even attempting to connect the dots.

Bingo. Rugby players are clearly the biggest users, and RTE lionise them. Don’t forget the GAA though, huge uptake there too. Can only imagine how much more will start juicing if the sport turns paid professional.

They can increase cardiac muscle, reducing the space inside your heart ventricles, that would not normally happen through natural training. Then you can’t supply the necessary blood/oxygen for the demand, a recipe for disaster.

Forget the steroids, all anyone is talking about is Dr Higgins’ girly voice. His voiceover was on for a while before his talking head appeared, and I nearly fell off the couch

He’s a natural bodybuilder – you can tell by the pencil neck and girly voice. He’s a walking advertisement for what happens if you don’t ‘roid. A few weeks on the juice will really deepen the voice and thicken up your vocal chords doc.
