It cost €2.6bn to build that bridge between Russia and Crimea, you know, the 18km one over the Kerch Strait. The sea that it’s built over is up to 94m deep. The bridge itself is 35m above the sea. It has six lanes and a railway track. Took three years to build.

The National Childrens Hospital, a traditional building with a foundation, walls, windows and such, is going to cost €1.4bn (at least) and will take 12 years to build.

    1. Brother Barnabas

sure they’ve been talking about that bridge since 1903 – it was tsar nicholas II’s idea

we’ve only been talking about a new children’s hospital for 20 or 30 years

    2. Martco

I wouldn’t go comparing with state/political driven projects like that bridge or some of the bonkers stuff that gets delivered in places like China, almost oranges & pears. Political driven stuff in jurisdictions where human rights are cheap get done in a blink, because. Of course there’s also the opposite of that scale whereby in this country we’re maybe too conservative & nothing gets done.

’tis an interesting subject however this slow pace of delivery.

While this hospital has some scale it’s not THAT big compared to some of the stuff in London & beyond. Even making allowances you’d have to wonder….

The other head scratcher is that infernal M7 upgrade, seems to be taking forever. back in ’90 in my very first proper job I worked in the catering end alongside a crowd building a motorway on the outskirts of Amsterdam….they had this monster gear almost like a rolling factory…they worked 24/7 & they laid 1 KILOMETRE PER WEEK.

here’s a nice little historical article on tunnels:
      https://www.irishtimes.com/news/science/tunnel-vision-a-plot-to-link-ireland-and-britain-ran-deep-1.2775567

Imagine we had a go at that, at least 100 years :)

Shudder to think what the SBP will look like after Tom Lyons and Jack Horgan Jones work out their notices. The Phoenix magazine says both are leaving, and two replacements, Emmet Oliver and a former Post staffer don’t inspire confidence.Insiders think the SBP will become a simple weekly compendium for unchallenged press releases.

Meantime, until he works out his notice, today, Tom Lyons goes large on rival INM, revealing plans to cut costs again, along with the intro of a paywall. And the snooping reaches level elite with an investigation of cameras in the workplace.

    1. Johnny

Tom and Jack have done some some good reporting on Digicel, they both covered the 40 million in fees paid by Digicel to Island Capital, very magnanimous to pay those spook fess,Island Capital was in line to receive another 10 million from the still born IPO.

DOB’s man in the property arena is x NAMA John Mulcahy, currently presiding over another disaster know as Glenveagh.NAMA where John was the most senior property expert, also engaged in various cloak and dagger nonsense, retaining numerous spooks to sniff around the knicker drawers of many Irish developers/builders WAG’s,desperately searching for baubles, anything to avoid actually building a few houses or assisting Irish developers in doing so.

The smart money in NY is playing for a break up of Digicel, via a bankruptcy filling, does Dennis have the chutzpah to ask for another extension this week.O’Brien simply does not have 1 Billion in cash required to recapitalize it,has the NTMA/NAMA as bondholders in Digicel a view on all these shenanigans ?

‘The Phase I 2020 Notes Exchange Offer will expire at 11:59 p.m., New York City time, on December 18, 2018, and the Phase II 2020 Notes Exchange Offer and the Phase II 2022 Notes Exchange Offer will expire at 11:59 p.m., New York City time, on December 21, 2018, in each case, unless extended (such date and time with respect to an Exchange Offer, as the same may be extended for such Exchange Offer, the “Expiration Date”).’

        More guff from you Jonny.

What is wrong with NAMA chasing after ‘bankrupt’ developers to see if they have defrauded the state by squirrlling money away?

NAMA have spent billions building houses.

And how exactly is NAMA a bondholder in digicel?

        1. Johnny

Spent~hm-Cian can you please try utilize the correct nomenclature, your use of “Spent’ is wrong, illustrating ignorance.NAMA finances or invests in housing, yes it spends money on private dicks, they may have an opening ….

‘Actually searching Google is pretty easy. Just type what you’re interested in finding into the search box on the Google web site or into your toolbar!‘

Try be specific, how much did they “Spend” on spooks and cloak and dagger nonsense then, relative to what they recovered, how much time and resources were wasted on this ludicrous and idiotic exercise, directed by Noonan ?

          1. SOQ

You demand an attention to detail about spooks while claiming that you are living in NYC and are designing cannabis growing houses in… Colorado, Kansas, and Texas was it?

Correct me if I am wrong about the locations.

          2. johnny

Dear Johnny/Slim, I wrote you, but you still ain’t callin’
I left my cell, my pager and my home phone at the bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not’ve got ’em
There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin’
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot ’em…

Obsession isn’t just a perfume by Calvin Klein……..

          3. Cian

Even more guff from you Jonny.
And you didn’t answer any of my questions. Excuse my misuse of the word spent.

            I’ll try again:

What is wrong with NAMA chasing after ‘bankrupt’ developers to see if they have defrauded the state by squirrlling money away?

NAMA have spent invested billions building houses.

And how exactly is NAMA a bondholder in digicel?

          4. Johnny

Here’s a answer, stop asking stupid questions on topics you have little or no expertise in.

It’s tiresome engaging with someone with so little knowledge in this area, your like that annoying heavy set person at soul cycle, with your hand in the air waiving a towel around and constantly looking for attention, while totally out synch and shape.

Get up speed on NAMA and stop wasting my time.

          5. Cian

Thanks Johnny you are talking rubbish.
You do this all the time. You make random statements and imply things. And then you don’t back them up. You made these statements, you need to provide evidence (or shut up). So one more time Mr NAMA expert:

What is wrong with NAMA chasing after ‘bankrupt’ developers to see if they have defrauded the state by squirrelling money away?

NAMA have invested billions building houses.
I am now providing evidence of this claim: https://www.irishtimes.com/business/commercial-property/nama-has-funded-building-of-more-than-5-500-new-homes-it-says-1.3268407

And how exactly is NAMA a bondholder in Digicel?

          6. Johnny

You link doesn’t mention billions, you made that up,what’s wrong with you ?

Every time I post on here, you come flying in lashing wild accusations around, trying desperately smear me and my posts.I’ve answered so many your idiotic questions, asked you nicely numerous time not comment, but you persist~why ?

When I do provide backup/links you slink away all befuddled and lost as you don’t have the expertise to engage -so why bother throwing shade that you cant back up?

          7. Cian

Johnny, you are right, I didn’t provide evidence of ‘billions’. My bad. And you don’t answer my questions. You have avoided my request for evidence again.

You said “[NAMA will do] anything to avoid actually building a few houses or assisting Irish developers in doing so.”

That link refutes your statement by showing that NAMA have assisted developers to provide 5,500 houses.

Your turn. Can you answer my questions (I know you can’t)?
What is wrong with NAMA chasing after ‘bankrupt’ developers to see if they have defrauded the state by squirrlling money away?
This is more opinion than fact, so you could answer this with your opinion. Or not bother.

NAMA have spent billions building houses. – we’ll skip this one as it is answered.

And how exactly is NAMA a bondholder in digicel? This is a nice juicy fact. Can you provide evidence for this? Or admit you are wrong? Or are you trying to misguide us all?

“I’m sure I’ve got a big mouth and some of the speeches I’ve made and some of the organisations and activism I’ve been involved in has not done me any favours.” says heroic victim of abject criticism on Broadsheet, Terry McMahon today in the Sunday Times as he promotes the Nigerian film being produced by a Lagos event organiser that he talked about, and which was reported here, a few weeks back

  4. bisted

…wow…@UnaHealy has 710k followers on twitter…surely she can be persuaded not to participate in Eurovision due to be held in apartheid Tel Aviv…shame on RTE for persisting with this evil charade…

  5. Brother Barnabas

what an extraordinary athlete + champion katie taylor is, and humble and decent on top of it all

  6. SOQ

Second referendum on the horizon so. May’s crew scheming with Labour, Tony Blair scheming with the EU, and the Brexiteers overheating to the point of catching fire.

Is there any part of the British political establishment which isn’t at each other’s throats?

  7. Me

What is the pic of the LUAS stop about? The pic appears as the first pic of 14 when you do a pic preview of all the Sunday papers.

  8. anne

I hear a load of loyalist security guys got a battering this time round with some eviction or other.

    Harris won’t be too pleased.

    Happy Christmas.

“Many people in this country are receiving notice to quit letters from banks which are moving to sell buy-to-let properties. We need to introduce a law in this country so that this does not continue to happen. In my opinion, many of the banks involved are scum. Yesterday in County Roscommon a group of 20 or 30 men with dogs came from the North, aided and abetted by An Garda Síochána who blocked off two roads. The group of men pegged three people, two of whom were elderly, out of a house and left them on the side of the road. They were aided and abetted by An Garda Síochána, which is disgraceful. Irish people need to wake up, especially if people are coming from the North. We must take them on and stop what is happening.”

That’s the Roscommon TD Michael Fitzmaurice speaking in the Dail last week.

  9. Ron

The Yellow Vest movement is going to be the catalyst for riots on the streets of Ireland. People have had enough and regardless of the legalities, people don’t like to see northern security men evicting people from their homes. They don’t even care about the optics anymore.

Leo will go down as the most hated Taoiseach of our time. The man who destroyed Ireland. The most ineffective and incompetent leader we have seen. A complete failure.

      1. Giggidygoo

the worm has turned. Roscommon (the reaction to the eviction, and the Castlerea march). Both the result of FFG and the Gardai’s protecting thugs and acting the thug themselves.

      1. Ron

Bet when you heard that statement you couldn’t wait to use it on broadsheet to show us all how sophisticated you are. Buffoonery and breakfast roll man. I mean your intellect knows no bounds using words like that. Well done you.

  10. Dub Spot

Una Healy on Whatsapp with her agent all day it seems to place stories in the Daily Irish Mail and Sunday Info. Who cares?

…think it was George Bernard Shaw that said:…if you tie a random Irish man to a stake you’ll always find another to light the match…

“When a man takes a farm from which another had been evicted you must shun him on the roadside when you meet him, you must shun him in the streets of the town, you must shun him in the shop, you must shun him in the fairgreen and in the marketplace, and even in the place of worship, by leaving him alone, by putting him in a moral Coventry, by isolating him from the rest of his country as if he were the leper of old, you must show your detestation of the crime he has committed”.

    Charles Stewart Parnell, 1880

  12. SOQ

News not in the papers, ANY papers is that a gay man was subjected to a bad beating by four men which resulted in hospitalisation just north of Newry.

His crime? Turning up for a meet off Grindr. Local websites/newspapers mysteriously silent, likewise PSNI. Seriously?

          1. SOQ

Anything to get under the skin. Doesn’t matter how right or wrong eh?

I am reporting something which has the gay community on high alert in the area. But yeah, keep going.

          2. Johnny

            Reporting ?
            Stop da press……..
Hold the front page-sad old queen has breaking news, from the scene, from a source, ehh NO!

WTF is this Stan, what does it even mean,Kansas,Texas ?

‘You demand an attention to detail about spooks while claiming that you are living in NYC and are designing cannabis growing houses in… Colorado, Kansas, and Texas was it?

Correct me if I am wrong about the locations‘

Stay out the kitchen old queen if you can’t stand the heat !

          3. SOQ

You make a homophobic joke then get hyper sensitive when called out it? You certainly are predictable, I’ll give you that. I am asking the question as to why to was not reported in the media, as are a lot of other people too.

As for the other, that was your own worlds, except the locations kept changing, oh and a successful business man too apparently, and a vegan, who does voluntary work for the homeless…. except you are none of that now are you?

  13. old bean

    Soq
No different than women meeting up etc and getting abused
And many of those events are kept quiet especially if they wear frilly knickers
But the name of the site is a clue
    Grinder
    As in meat grinder

    1. SOQ

Women do not end up in hospital after a causal meeting with an online date which turned out to be four other men. Or if the did, the very least would be coverage from the local rags and a statement from the police alerting the general public. Both of which, in this case, are missing.

It is Grindr btw, and why men use it does not under any circumstances justify what happened.

  14. Ron

It’s almost like a perfect storm. Brexit already stirring up strong republican sentiment in the minds of people. Former paramilitary style thugs being sent to the south of Ireland to evict people from their farm. Aided by the Gardai. Wait until the Brexit story further develops and Ireland gets a bad deal in order to placate the UK. Add in the 10000 homeless people. now add hundreds of thousands on health care waiting lists. Irish people have been like a ticking time bomb of anger over the last few years watching the sheer incompetence and breathtaking austerity imposed on the Irish Taxpayer. Now add in a Taoiseach who was never a leader and is in my opinion the most ineffective, inept, incompetent Taoiseach we have ever had. Then there is the leader of Fianna Fail who props this shambolic government up after he was directly and collectively responsible for making an absolute balls of this country. He hangs on to his leadership like a desperate man. He has no idea how to lead effectively and all he knows is the gravy train he has been riding all his life.

now add all of that together and the success that the French people are having by taking direct action against their Government and you are now going to see more incidents like Roscommon. People are fed up. They have had enough and it was always just a matter of time before it turned to violence.

Leo and Michael are responsible for bringing this country back 100 years. They both should be ashamed of the damage they have done to this country and its people.

The illusion of democracy the politicians like to portray has not worked. People see through it. one sided greed, corruption, inequality. It’s all going to end in violence until they are finally gone.

  15. old bean

Actually Ireland will just simmer away and the people will just swallow it
When the crash happened vanity fair editor did a piece which they noted that Ireland was just in a daze
I honestly think its a colonial mentality where we will just simmer
Maybe if an election happens Sinn feinn will get a few more seats and the people before profit and everyone will do a deal to get ministerial posts and provided the EU keeps the tools of state functioning we will just continue as a zombie economy
Lets face it the debt will just be added on for the next ten generations to pay
    Life will go on

  16. Martco

looks like the regular media are being very vague/light on detail about what happened in Roscommon
there’s a bit more to read here in the local paper:

    https://www.democrat.ie/

I wonder if this were the same crew who turned up with the ropey untaxed ex-manchester police van in Dublin?

9 o’c news coming up now lets see…

    1. Catherine costelloe

The man on the ground is garda of 30+ years Kevin Taylor. They broke his teeth and he was hospitalized.
      People have had enough frankly.
