Further to the announcement by Irish ferries that  it may stop sailing between Rosslare [County Wexford] and France….

Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One, Minister Shane Ross said he did not know that the move was going to happen.

Mr Ross said he had spoken to Irish Ferries owner Eamonn Rothwell about the decision and would do so again.

…He said: “No, they haven’t convinced me this is the right decision at all, I think it’s very, very bad for Rosslare but what I’m saying is that I can’t interfere with a commercial decision that’s all.”

    It’s a pity we have one of the most pathetic, gombeen like, politicians at the helm of transport given the hard brexit that will now take place. This link will be crucial next year.

    Brilliant decision from Irish Ferries, Rosslare is a kip and the roads to get there are horrendous.

      This might add about three hours to the sailing time for a modern ferry.

      Not much loss for anyone living in Dublin or north of it, driving time Dublin Port to Rosslare Harbour is nearly two and a half hours.

          I am comparing Cherbourg to Rosslare total sailing time with Cherbourg to Dublin total sailing time.

          A ferry travels at about 50kmh, no? Sailing distance is about 150km.

            They don’t have to sail past Rosslare first :-) Presumably the craft would immediately head south east upon departing Dublin. You’re not restricted by roads in the sea.

      We’re currently in the process of building fancy new roads for the primary purpose of having better connection with Rosslare

    TBH this makes France much more accessible to people from the north of the country – Cork already has sailings to France.

    Population of the island is skewed north and east so it makes sense to have more sailings from Dublin.

    Hauliers prefer sailing to driving time – it’s cheaper and doesn’t go on the tacograph – I am very surprised they are objecting as final destinations are much more accessible from Dublin port than from Rosslare.

      As a side note the Brittany Ferries craft that sails to Cork is vastly superior in every way.

    Breaking News:
    David McCourt has won a Tender to operate Rosslare-Roscoff ferry for 100 years. There was only one bidder and the bid has not been evaluated yet but he knows a man who knows a man.

    The ferry will be Captained by Shane Ross and will include a full length hockey pitchh on deck. Service will operate on a 24×7 Service with Hourly departures and a 60 minute journey time. McCourt is quoted as saying that this will be cheaper than chips,

    Ross really is a one handed typer.

    First he waved the high hand and reduced drink driving to a limit where people (especially women) cannot have a drink the night before without presenting any evidence that the reduction will make a blind bit of difference and then, wanted to bring in higher speeding penalties without any reference to the accident black spots where lives are actually lost.

    Now, he had no idea that a ferry was about to pull one of its Euro route at a time when post Brexit their profitability would sore. Now why is that I wonder?
