Rachel Carey writes:
January 15 marks the 20th anniversary of Pádraig Flynn’s memorable appearance on the Late Late Show.
During a routine interview with Gay Byrne, Pádraig Flynn, then EU Commissioner, was portraying himself as a perfect politician. When pushed to speak about Tom Gilmartin, a property developer who was reluctant to speak at the Mahon Tribunal, Flynn snapped.
He launched into a rant about Gilmartin and his wife, who suffered from multiple sclerosis and was paralysed in a wheelchair. Gilmartin who was listening to the interview at home in the UK vowed to bury Flynn.
It was an interview which would change the shape of Irish politics forever and cause the demise of Pádraig Flynn.
Jack Murray, CEO and founder of MediaHQ.com, wrote and recorded a podcast (above) vividly recounting the story of the interview.
The podcast really gets into the detail of the story and gives us some background that many people wouldn’t be aware of….

‘would change the shape of Irish politics forever ‘..give me a break.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
+1.
This was an exposure of the Flynn rat. It didn’t change the shape of Irish politics because many more like him continued the game.
the apple didn’t fall far from the tree regarding his daughter. another unscrupulous piece of work.
which one? one was done for driving a bus with no insurance and another helped others avoid tax by setting up offshore bank accounts. there’s an awful stink off of them flynns.
he probably means the Beverley wan..a serious “upgrade” on the oul man, major weapon
The Interview didn’t cause the demise of P Flynn, that was all down to Flynn himself.
Sloppy journalism
Anyway, the boo boo is still alive and wealthy and not in jail.
He is in jail. didn’t you read the article? they say “It was an interview which would change the shape of Irish politics forever and cause the demise of Pádraig Flynn.” which means he was ruined ruined RUINED (and dead)!!!!! why would anyone use the term “change the shape of Irish politics forever” if things hadn’t changed. Before this interview no politician went to jail for corruption, today . every politician who whiffs of corruption goes straight to the big house , because this interview CHANGED THE FACE OF IRISH POLITICS FOREVER ™!!!!!. Look at Bertie there sitting in the Joy for the last decade, the only comfort he gets is the odd letter and short fiction essays from his well meaning , but zero talented daughter, which is the way it should be. Awful prose altogether , I shudder to think how things would have turned out if he had wiggled himself free from prosecution. He could be still free and out there getting paid shaking hands of collage graduates and giving lectures and his kids making movie deals from sh~_te writing.
More tea dear?
Give him some camomile
As for Gay Byrne, what a creep
National treasure apparently. Never understood the appeal myself. A total phoney.Annie Murphy interview showed him up for what he is.
Must take a look.
He was very good at what he did.
He (on the Late Late show) introduced topics into the Irish living room that were ground-breaking. He brought Catholic Ireland (kicking and screaming) into the 20th century
