This was a reprinting of it, which I admit is not 100% clear from the sub-headlines. i remember reading about it a number of years back, possibly even when it was reprinted. Caused a bit of a furore then, too.
It then followed that the influx of women into traditionally male workplaces in the 1940s, particularly in Britain and the US, contributed hugely to the Allied victory in WW2. So be mindful when historians, or indeed anyone, from those Allied nations wax on about ‘our boys’. Without women there would have been no munitions, crops etc.
People wax on about “our boys” because millions of them were horribly injured or were killed. Women on the homefront absolutely made big sacrifices during the war, but its just not comparable in any way to the horrors a soldier faced on the front lines.
