A statue of Margaret Thatcher will be erected, despite the threat of protesters? (Miners, steel-workers, farmers, coal-workers, car-workers, oh and Irish types?).

  2. Gertrude

Why is Thatcher’s likeness being thrust upon the brits now, as the whole Brexit saga chugs to its scat-filled conclusion? To rouse the ‘stoic’ gammon stalwarts’ patriotic ‘fighting spirit’ ? A lone Thatcher supporter ;-) – suggested it should be put in a pond in Grantham, after London’s rejection of it, a swamp or sewer would be more appropriate…

I am relishing every crash and burn moment the hardcore Brexiteers are currently experiencing. Long buried truths being thrust under the glare of the world spotlight – the ‘Empire’ and all it’s sore supporters, are having having to withstand their ultimate, long overdue humiliation. Die-hard gammons disputing the fact that Gibraltar is a colony, Churchill being dragged over the coals and rightfully called out for the hateful supremist he was, and quite frankly, all of England’s disgusting historic war and hate crimes . It’s witnessing the autopsy of a long sought after mass-murderer – and gleefully soaking up every last millisecond of his/her dissection.

I would not have voted for Brexit, given the choice, but by God I’m cherishing the sinking of this particular monster, couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of lads.

Merkel cutely dropping Varadkar in it.
This talk of an electronic solution – Ireland / UK to develop one says Merkel. Boy, aren’t we lucky that herself and the EU have our back? 100% behind Ireland my a…
Anyway, no one has given any remote indication of any electronic solution that could stop smuggling or provide cover for all of the length of the border. The EU is preparing to drop its support of Ireland. But we knew that already. We were the big stick to beat the UK with, and the lapdog Varadkar fell for it.
There is no, and never was, a backstop. It was a proposal put into the proposed withdrawal agreement. And the proposal of one, which Vacron and Coveney have been at pains to say wouldn’t have its terms changed now becomes the shuttlecock.

In the meantime, the Grand Old Duke of Cork does his usual march half way up the hill as regards the National Children’s Hospital and the nurses pay dispute. FF – the laughing stock of politics. A jellyfish has more backbone.

    1. ReproBertie

You really should read more than the headline. Had you done so you’d have read that Merkel believes there is a “close to zero” chance of the backstop being altered but that she invited the British Taoiseach to come up with alternative suggestions.

The EU is still 100% united behind Ireland.

      1. Giggidygoo

‘Close to’ – and then you say 100% behind Ireland.
Just beneath the headline it says that the German government is backing a modified backstop. Or did you miss that bit? Modified backstop. ( Modified proposal actually, as the backstop doesn’t exist, and never did)

        1. ReproBertie

Everyone backs a modified backstop. That’s the point. The backstop only exists until a better option is presented, ideally through a trade deal. As it stands, the current backstop was the best the UK could come up with. If they can come up with something better then it’ll be welcomed by all. They just haven’t managed to do so yet.

      2. Martco

@Repro I admire your faith but to me ‘tis all rhetoric at this point.

In terms of sentiment I’d say you’re correct, 100% (the EU project is at its core a peace construct after all)

In terms of hard cold factual business I’d say it’s anyone’s guess and far short of 100% (I imagine Brussels have contingency plans for explaining away whatever bs solution will physically be enforced upon us in Dublin cometh the hour. bs is what politicians excel at after all, no?)

        1. ReproBertie

If you want to talk cold hard business then you need to take into account the new EU tax regulations coming into play this year which the DUP and Conservatives have repeatedly voted against but which the UK will be subject to if they don’t leave on the 29th. The options facing the UK are No Deal, the current WA or an extension which means they get hit with the tax regulations. Of those options, the current WA will be the most palatable to the Sasamachs, though they’ll grumble and moan and blame the bullying EU and the obstinate Irish right up until the 29th.

      3. ollie

        @ReproBertie
Watch how this pans out. Customs lite on the Border, goods vehicles put through full rigour. Goods moving from EU to ireland via UK will be in a sealed container, so no checks. goods coming from UK subject to full customs chesks and tarriffs. Return of closed roads across border.
EU is about to sell Ireland out for the UK’s Brexit payments and trade.
They sold us out when the banks collapsed so no big deal for them to do it again.

        1. ReproBertie

We’ve been promised that the EU would abandon Ireland to give the UK a deal for almost 2 years now.

          Wolf! Wolf!

    2. Eoin

The Times Ireland reporting is based on a single source. It’s co-penned by the British political editor and the deputy editor of the Irish edition. The Irish political editor Niamh Lyons wouldn’t even touch it. If you didn’t know better, you’d think this was Murdoch’s boys trying to hammer a wedge between the EU members.

I’d file it under questionable speculation.

    3. Formerly known as @ireland.com

Let’s see how the next few weeks go. Until the backstop is dropped, it is still there. All this talk of the EU favouring the Brexiting UK over the EU member Ireland is just baloney.

  4. Giggidygoo

So, are there any Irish government contracts where Interserve (or any of its companies here) are involved? Another web of companies, subsidiaries.

  5. SOQ

Does anyone know what this infamous technological solution to the border actually is? It can’t be CCTV because that would be regraded as physical infrastructure so something satellite based maybe?

    1. :-Joe

The EU and even some tory muppets have already clearly stated that the scenario, let alone the technology does not exist nor is it implemented in any way, anywhere in the EU.

It involves designing a comletely brand new system of IT infrastructure and the tories are acting like it’s easy, no problem because like everything else they have spent about two weeks throwing a random bunch of unfortunates into looking at the problem…

The tories want a 1970’s Hong Kong / modern Singapore style tax haven and they don’t care about anything outside the borders north of London(If they even think further than the streets of the financial district).

Tory elitist scum are morally incapable of being trusted to do anything outside their own self interest of greed and averice, nevermind the casual racism, abuse and inhumanity etc. etc. all the rest.

Brexit means hard border and hopefully an accelerated fast-track to a united Ireland
-(If we can find a way to de-programme the DUP lunatics)

      :-J

    2. scottser

I reckon there will be great sport to be had shooting drones down in the border counties. Top tip, use a net gun.

        1. bisted

…the brexit frensy may be reaching fever pitch in the media but along the border any hope of brexit, with its political and economic advantages, have been abandoned…the fudge has already started…no change…another victory for the DUP (albeit pyrrhic)…

          1. SOQ

Not sure what you are saying there? ANY change to the current arrangement will have the mother of all blowbacks.

      1. Martco

nah they’re expensive toys and overall fairly ineffective, same with shotguns etc. that’s all reactive.

the proper solutions come from a far more sophisticated angle, there is a UAS countermeasure industry more on the military angle, lookup a device called AUDS to get the idea.

Little baby Jebus, is that really Catherine Zeta-Jones on the front page of the Express? Does she go to the same plastic surgeon as Rennie Zellweger.

    1. Junkface

Yes, they must feel such pressure to get plastic surgery once they hit 40 or 50 ish in Hollywood, but the results are so bizarre, like the personality has been lost forever, but struggles under the surface. I’ve always admired Helen Mirren and the likes who age without plastic surgery, and retain their spark, or sexiness.

      1. millie st murderlark

I adore Helen. She’s truly gorgeous and wonderful and I want to be like her when I age*.

Here’s one for the history books, FG government 2011-2019 and its flirtation with rapid-build housing.

    From the Times Ireland today.

“Dublin city council is set to abandon plans for a development of rapid-build homes after it was quoted €3 million for five units. The council owns the land in question on Fishamble Street so the figure of €600,000 per unit was based on construction only. ”

FG, the party of financial incompetence.

    1. Cian

      FG? No.

Dublin City Council is Sinn Fein/Independent/FF. But don’t let facts get in the way of a good rant.

      1. GiggidyGoo

So they SF FF IND made a good decision obviously- they rejected it. Pity the same decision making process wasn’t applied by Vacron and Co as regards IW, and the NCH.

But the Rapid Build Housing decision was a FG one – a government decision, not a Co Co or City Council one.

No doubt if it was a FG led council, these would have got the go ahead.

No Cian- don’t let facts get in the way.

          1. GiggidyGoo

Oh what a clever little fellow. What a really clever thought-out contribution. And an assumption thrown in – how did we ever manage without you?….oh wait….name change!

    Nothing’s changed in Garda culture.

A senior Garda is accused of using racist language in a briefing to junior Gardai. The absolute no-no racist word for black people was used. So, what happens? It seems to me a junior Garda reports the language and there is an investigation. And, according to Mick Clifford today ….

“The senior garda in question was cleared following the investigation but a junior garda was found to have breached discipline. He was subsequently cleared.”

    1. Eoin

And, from the Irish Times. Gardai had denied assaulting a citizen, but yesterday the Garda Commissioner threw in the towel in the court case taken by the citizen

“He said he lay on the ground and was not resisting when he was hit on the arm, hip and leg with batons and one garda stood on his feet which were bare at the time. He was cuffed and while seated in the patrol car a garda punched him on the right side of the head, he claimed. He was taken to Finglas Garda Station and released without charge about a half an hour later.”

Were the Gardai lying when they denied what was claimed? If the Gardai weren’t lying, why did the Commissioner throw in the towel? How much did the assault and court case cost the taxpayer? Have the Gardai faced disciplinary proceedings?

In all the papers, Denis O’Brien is suing the Sunday Business Post claiming his reputation was harmed in an article.

Does anyone know when the Siteserv inquiry, established in 2015, is due to report?

    1. GiggidyGoo

I’d say that report is sitting on top of the Moriarty report. The one that Kenny said wouldn’t gather dust yet still sitting in Varadkars office. They’ll have to strengthen the floor in the Taoiseach’s office soon.

I see Ben Gilroy is out of prison on bail as he challenges his committal order.

I also see Ben is seeking the removal of online video about him which he claims is defamatory. One of the most bizarre cases I’ve ever seen. The videos are apparently about treating autism with bleach. Ben has just lost his application to have the videos removed. Some of the detail in the judgement, well, you couldn’t make it up.
