Coined by the late Beetle Bailey cartoonist Mort Walker but in use long before that, the term ‘grawlix’ denotes a string of symbols used to indicate obscenity without using obscenity.

We prefer the more provocative ‘tootle-pootle popkins’.

    I found that very informative. I had often wondered how the practice started (usually after a few too many and at OMGIE) and if there were standards or conventions. By that, I mean do more @@@ mean something worse than a #, with a ! being milder?
