Independents 4 Change TD Joan Collins

This afternoon.

In the Dáil, during Leaders’ Questions which were taken by Tánaiste Simon Coveney.

Independents 4 Change TD Joan Collins was speaking about workers’ rights when she said:

“Recently, I’ve been approached by workers in a new, very swanky and expensive Ivy restaurant where the company are taking the major proportion of tips paid to staff – using these tips to make up the difference in their wages.

“I’ll give you an example. One worker signed a contract, in October, for €14.90 an hour. They’re now being paid €9.80 an hour and the difference is being made up with the tips. So this company is robbing the workers of their money and we don’t know where the rest of the money is going…it seems to be pocketed by the company.”

[The Independent4Change TD’s office confirmed Ms Collins was referring to  the Ivy restaurant in Dawson Street, Dublin 2]

During his response, Mr Coveney said:

“Just on the tips issue, let me just be very clear: Any employer that calculates salary and includes tips in that figure is acting illegally. You can’t do it. Tips are separate to salary. And if there are issues the Government needs to act there: we will look at that closely.”

The Ivy has been well known to be doing this for a while now with no repercussions hasn’t it? Someone (Gardai? Civil servants?) needs to get on that.

I hate to say it but I sort of like the cut of Coveney’s jib sometimes, he seems out of place with the blue shirts but I’m sure someone will educate me accordingly. If he pushes for the recognition of Palestine I will like him even more.

+1. Of all the senior FGers Coveney seems by far the most competent. And even, possibly, whisper it, a little principled. Its such a shame he didn’t win the leadership.

His being “outfoxed by the likes of Leo” is probably more of a testament to Leo’s love of optics/game playing/dark arts than anything else. As we’ve discovered since then it certainly wasn’t because of Leo’s capabilities to get things done anyway.

His performance during the fg leadership contest exposed him for the lightweight that he is, just another son of a td who gets by on his name alone.

Dine & dash en-masse ? I’m sure the internets could organize a flash mob of phony diners. Dress well, have a few noticeable Brown Thomas shopping bags with you filled with empty boxes leave them near your table, pretend to nip for a smoke or important urgent phone call “hold on, where are you?” ” hang on I’m just stepping outside for a signal…” between dinner and desert and hop on the passing luas.

      I already was.

As the FT reported about the sleazy owner of the Ivy

“Close your eyes and you’re sleeping with the most beautiful woman in the world,” Mr Gould added, before bringing one of the hostesses hired by agency Artista up on to the stage as a living advertisement and watching as she pointed out the various parts of her anatomy that had been “done” at the clinic.

With a winning bid of £25,000, Mr Gould proclaimed the prize won by “the legend that is Richard Caring”, owner of a string of high-end restaurants including The Ivy and at that moment seated at table two.”

Wow! I am shocked that they are doing that. That is deplorable. You would think a high-end establishment like that would be more careful about tarnishing its reputation by carrying on like that!

    What’s the grub like
