A Day in May

A play about the fight for marriage equality.

By Colin Murphy, directed by Gerry Stembridge and based on interviews by Charlie Bird for his book with Kevin Rafter, A Day in May.

It played in the Olympia, Dublin last June to a rapturous reception (above) and is now coming to Belfast, Galway, Tallaght, Dun Laoghaire and Blanchardstown.

Colm writes:

The play takes us from the dark days of 1982 and the murder of Declan Flynn, through decriminalisation and the split in the movement over civil partnership, up to the campaign for marriage equality and #hometovote.

There’s music, slapstick, Irish mammies, tragedy, tears and a lot of laughter.

April 9, Town Hall Galway; April 11, Lyric, Belfast; April 12, Civic, Tallaght; April 16, Pavilion, Dun Laoghaire; April 18, Draíocht, Blanchardstown.

Starring Norma Sheahan from Bridget & Eamon; Mary Murray from Love/Hate; Mark O’Regan; Arthur Riordan; Amy Conroy; Clodagh Mooney Duggan; Anthony Kinahan; and Conor Gormally.

Not to steal the thunder from this, but also well worth going to see is Ann Blake (oh she of BPLO and The Unlucky Cabin Boy fame) and her self written and multiply acclaimed production ‘The Morning After The Life Before’.

For those wondering, Ann was behind one of the wonderful iconic images of the campaign, with a ballot box asking ‘Will you let Ann marry Jenny?’ (sorry, despite searching, I cannot find it, my Google search skills suck, but I know it was featured here on the ‘Sheet at one point).

I was in The George when that was announced. With a friend and a 17 year old German girl wearing a (dark stylish) pink wig to make her look older. She went home head scratching as to why we.. She knows more about Dublin pride than me these days ffs. srt8.

The world is still the same, we all have a poo and a shave every morning, especially the lesbians. Life goes and bills need paid and that obnoxious pup or princess called a child is even more attention seeking than ever

And soon we will have divorce on demand and people on a whim making a mockery over marriage
People make mistakes but children have to live with the consequences
Both my parents were twice married and both sets of children lived as fractured families
My step siblings resent us and we resent our step siblings but hey that’s life
