How professional. Minister texts CMO instead of phoning him. That’s what kids do.

Apparently, the expulsion of Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy in London is imminent – in the coming hours or days – at which point he’ll surely be disappeared away to the US and tried in secret. A watershed moment for journalistic freedoms and will send a clear signal to any would be whistleblowers and journalists who might dare follow his lead. But watch for the muted response across the board in the usual outlets -from those that care more about their careers than speaking truth to power!

    https://medium.com/@caityjohnstone/why-your-hatred-of-assange-is-completely-irrelevant-d2fb9f603c9a
“The facts are that prosecuting Julian Assange under the Espionage Act for exposing US war crimes, as the Trump administration is attempting to do, would strike a devastating blow to press freedoms around the world. This is because there are no legal distinctions in place separating an outlet like WikiLeaks from outlets like the New York Times, the Washington Post, or the Guardian, meaning that a precedent would be set allowing for the prosecution of those outlets on the same grounds, who also publish anonymous government leaks.

…Only facts matter here. And the facts say that everyone, regardless of how they feel about Assange, must defend him against the US government’s attempts to prosecute him for publishing inconvenient truths. Not because it’s the right thing to do, not because anyone expects you to behave in a moral way, but out of sheer, garden variety self-interest. We all need the ability to hold power to account, and the prosecution of Assange will necessarily cripple our ability to do that. This is a fact. Regardless of how your feelings feel.”

I had to remind myself yesterday, Julian Assange has been living in a single house, the Ecuadorian embassy, since 2012. Seven years.

just yesterday the UK Foreign Office tweeted that they’re “launching a global campaign to defend media freedom” and UK foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, said it should be an “international taboo of the highest order” to “detain” journalists. Meanwhile down the road from his office, the only arbitrarily detained (according to a UN expert panel in 2016) journalist in Europe is being held. The level of hypocrisy is staggering!

it’s time to go out and face the rape charges not to mention his destruction of the US elections

Well done George Clooney for the worldwide boycott of business linked to the king/sultan/whatever of micro state Brunei after Brunei brought in death by stoning for homosexuals and adulterers. Front page news in the FT and it’s wildfire on social media.

And where is Frances Black and her boycott of trade with *illegal settlements* (as defined and supported by the UN)?

    1. bisted

…is Frances Black’s bill not to impose a ban on goods from illegal settlements…encouraging the boycott of goods from occupied territory has been a central part of the BDS movement for some time…

See article on Assange above.. the chilling effect of threat on the ability to speak truth to power in evidence. In case any of us doubted it.

Times Ireland manages to get a full article about INM takeover where the only new info is

“According to a source familiar with the situation, the approach was most likely to have been made by a venture capital firm. “[INM] have been touting it around London for the past three months. None of the UK publishers are interested,” the source said.”

So, INM itself has been putting itself up for sale in the UK? No wonder INM appointed Murdoch Maclennan as chairman last year. Of course, in order to put INM up for sale, you’d need the agreement of the 30% shareholder (DOB). Is INM still being run in his sole interest?

Tabloids focus on the Finglas drugs raid yesterday and the novelty of the monkey.

Machine guns, silencers, cocaine – this is what the Kinahan organised crime group has done to Ireland. The Kinahans, living the life of Reilly in Dubai courtesy of Mary Robinson’s bessie mates, Mo Maktoum and his missus.

Does Mo have any horses running at Aintree today? Be a shame if one of the Irish brigade told him to fupp off back to his drug trafficking guests in Dubai. Be a shame also if the National Crime Agency seized his horses as the proceeds of crime. After all, how much in backhanders are the Kinahans paying to stay in Dubai?

    1. bisted

…Aintree is for jump races, the Maktooms only interested in the flat…they have a horse running at Leopardstown today called Madmoon. An Irish trainer had to be given armed protection this week because he was running a horse seized by CAB…the same trainer has the favourite in the Grand National…lots of Dubai interest today…I wonder if Mary has any tips?

Your beloved SF/IRA were bringing in guns and all sorts long before the Kinnihans.

Times Ireland has a feature on its recent investigation on the shortage of housing for victims of domestic abuse. Ireland is supposed to have nearly 500 bedspaces under EU rules, but has less than a third of that. The most recent figures for 2015 show women being turned away because there is no accommodation available, TUSLA hasn’t published more recent figures.

“There are only four [bedspaces] in the midlands, with none in Laois, Longford or Offaly…Roscommon, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan also have no refuge spaces…Carlow also has no refuge spaces..There are no refuge spaces in the county [of Cork outside Cork city]..”

So much for women’s rights (and it is predominantly a women’s issue).

Blackstone which owns Jury’s and the Berkeley Court settled yet another case,in which it apologized for providing immigration authorities its guests info, some may have been fleeing domestic violence, who knows as they got deported.Given that a Blackstone entity is the only buyer for Dennis O’Briens cell towers in the Caribbean, don’t expect shall we say any deep dives by INM,Blackstone is a very significant player in Ireland.

‘(Reuters) – Motel 6 agreed to pay $12 million to settle a lawsuit in which Washington state’s attorney general said the chain routinely provided guest lists to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who announced the settlement on Thursday, said the money will go to roughly 80,000 people who stayed at seven of the chain’s Washington locations from 2015 and 2017.

He said their privacy rights were violated because Motel 6 gave their personal information to ICE without their knowledge, and at least nine Washington residents were detained.‘

Lead story in this week’s Phoenix is how FG has been selling Ireland’s neutrality down the river in Europe, signing us up for closer military cooperation which will see expenditure on defence rocket from less than €1 billion to maybe €3-5 billion. I look forward to reminding the disgraced and disgraceful Frances Fitzgerald of all of this when she comes knocking for support in next month’s European Parliament elections.

sure a border patrol would be the perfect first job for any new Irish EU Army unit, wha?

anyway tis good to see yet another day passing where the Irish tabloids fail to provide any analysis whatsoever of the actual ramifications of no deal. well save for the nice calm beauty shot of Helen Meda’sseat there at the fence

Everyone seems to have conveniently forgotten that this low-life skipped off to the Ecuadorian Embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden to face charges over sexual assault and rape.
What a shame such tawdry facts don’t fit the usual brain-dead liberal narrative spouted on here.
I suspect if any of the spotty youths on here grow up enough to manage to persuade a woman to sleep with them and they produce a daughter they might think differently.

    1. f_lawless

Except if you had followed the case closely enough you’d know:
      – that there were never any charges to face as none were ever brought against him;
      – that the evidence was originally reviewed by the chief prosecutor in Stockholm who declared there was no case to answer;
      – that a second prosecutor who took up the investigation delayed visiting Assange for years under advice from the British authorities
      – when she finally did visit and interview Assange in 2017,directly afterwards, the investigation was dropped
      – Assange has since been proved right in that he had every reason to fear extradition the US if he gone to Sweden. Since the rape narrative has been discredited, its come to light that the US had, in fact, secretly indicted him on espionage charges during the Obama years
      https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2017/05/no-rape-charges-julian-assange-sweden-espionage-charges-julian-assange-usa/

Apart from all this, this is not about Assange the person, it’s about journalistic freedoms and our ability to hold power to account being seriously impinged. Try to see the bigger picture on this.
“These are facts. It does not matter how your feelings feel”!

      1. Nigel

It’s not a ‘rape narrative.’ He was accused of rape. He absconded. Rape accusations aren’t inconveniences to otherwise noble journalistic crusades or flaws in your big picture. They matter.

        1. jusayinlike

Yea I totally remember that time you backed the women accusing Bill Clinton of rape..

          1. Nigel

I remember that time you celebrated when a man accused of multiple sexual assaults, including of a minor, was elected into high political office, which was a thing that actually happened, as opposed to stuff that didn’t.

          2. Nigel

What a weird thing to say. Hey, I remember that time you celebrated when a man accused of multiple sexual assaults, including of a minor, was elected into high political office, which was a thing that actually happened, as opposed to stuff that never really came up here one way or the other.

          3. jusayinlike

Yea you’re such an advocate for rape victims, it’s no wonder creepy Joe Biden is your hero.

          4. jusayinlike

Why bother when you can get your flat earth nutjob conspiracies from ranked democrat “liberal progressives” like Adam Schiff and Nanci Pelosi..

What’s your favourite flat earth theory Nigel?

        2. f_lawless

all I can say Nigel is you need to look more closely into the case with an open mind and/or upgrade your sources of information because you’re again falling foul of ‘weaponised feminism’.
Obviously rape allegations matter and I would never argue otherwise. But so too do the human rights and good name of someone who has been accused when no charges are ever brought against them, the investigation has been dropped, and the already available evidence clearly points to the case being one of trumped up charges driven by political persecution.
Eg. the text messages of the two women involved.:
As John Pilger puts it: ‘One of the SMS messages makes clear that one of the women did not want any charges brought against Assange, “but the police were keen on getting a hold on him”. She was “shocked” when they arrested him because she only “wanted him to take [an HIV] test”. She “did not want to accuse JA of anything” and “it was the police who made up the charges”. In a witness statement, she is quoted as saying that she had been “railroaded by police and others around her”.

Neither woman claimed she had been raped. Indeed, both denied they were raped and one of them has since tweeted, “I have not been raped.” The women were manipulated by police – whatever their lawyers might say now. Certainly, they, too, are the victims of this sinister saga.’
I’d recommend giving Pilger’s whole article a read for getting a clearer picture of how events unfolded: http://johnpilger.com/articles/getting-julian-assange-the-untold-story

I also think we should take heed of the 2012 statement by the prominent UK-based organisation “Women Against Rape”, who have campaigned for decades to get rapists caught, charged and convicted:
“The allegations against [Assange] are a smokescreen behind which a number of governments are trying to clamp down on WikiLeaks for having audaciously revealed to the public their secret planning of wars and occupations with their attendant rape, murder and destruction… The authorities care so little about violence against women that they manipulate rape allegations at will. [Assange] has made it clear he is available for questioning by the Swedish authorities, in Britain or via Skype. Why are they refusing this essential step in their investigation? What are they afraid of?”

          1. Nigel

Why do so many of your ‘narratives’ depend on speculation, opinions, and ignoring the idea of due process? I particularly like the idea that the Swedish police are being unreasonable in not allowing a fugitive to dictate the terms of his interview from outside their jurisdiction.

          2. jusayinlike

Lecturing someone on narratives whilst peddling a baseless conspiracy theory for two years..

          3. Forfuppssake

Lawless since when do alleged rapists get to dictate how the procedures of investigation work in a foreign country? Man up Assange and face the music you shameful wretch.

          4. Nigel

When your approach to debate is basically screaming over and over again ‘You’re as stupid as me,’ you’ve completely lost the plot.

          5. jusayinlike

Frivolous when you consider your hypocrital stance on Assange and your inability to recognise the many rape accusations against Bill Clinton.

  10. No Teeth Keith

The Swedish prosecutors dropped their investigation in sexual assault allegations in 2015 when the statue of limitations had expired – because Assange was holed up like a rat in the embassy.

Go back to your copy of the Morning Star you pound-shop Corbyn.

    1. f_lawless

can’t even get your dates right – the case was formerly dropped in 2017, although private emails between Swedish prosecutor, Marianne Ny and the UK Crown Prosecution Service, which were released under a FOI request, showed that she had wanted to drop the case 4 years earlier but eventually was persuaded not to do so by the CPS. As to why the CPS would take such a stance, points to a case of political persecution.
Ny: “The time passing, the costs and how severe the crime is to be taken into account together with the intrusion or detriment to the suspect. Against this background, we have found us to be obliged to lift the detention order … and to withdraw the European arrest warrant. If so this should be done in a couple of weeks. This would affect not only us but you too in a significant way…I am sorry this came as a [bad] surprise… I hope I didn’t ruin your weekend.”
CPS lawyer: “Don’t you dare get cold feet!!!”

Any work from the Irish News lately?

The platform upon which broadsheet.ie sits, runs on certain processes. The slower the input traffic, the less times it runs. But, when the platform drops posts, it really is time to move.

My point to JR more than once.
