While the reason is a tragedy, I must admit that I am enjoying the foreign press pages today. Good in a sad way to see how the French in particular are reporting this. Thanks for sharing them.
I for one would enjoy seeing more foreign papers in this section when relevant, always assuming the BS team have the time.

Commiserations Janet, your passion and loss are palpable, so many French have an emotional affinity for Notre Dame, the coeur of their country. Small comfort that the stone base is intact and artefacts were saved, and the French are already coming forward to pay for a restoration from their own pockets. It can’t be the same of course and there is an irreplaceable loss, but I hope in some ways the restoration will be better.

I asked a very simple question of Janet. You’ve seen the replies. Did she answer the question she was asked?
If you both think so, then that explains a lot.
Rep
Why did you feel the need to ask the question of her? Why should she respond in a way you deem fit to a question she does not deem worthy? Why are you acting all holier-than-thou when you are known to liberally throw insults around here to people whose opinions you do not agree with?
GiggidyGoo
The need to ask her was that she made a similar type attack on me yesterday. On that one I thought it was a one off. So today, as she commented on the poster again rather than the post, I asked her. Basically as to decide whether I’d engage with her on any new articles here.
From her attitude and replies, she’s not worth it.
So, provide the examples of the insults I throw around ‘liberally’ you refer to.

ah I see I hurt your feelings

And yet, you still avoid it. So how would you read, as above, hypocrite. Does it say more about the writer or the reader? Did you mean something else? Or how would you expect it to be taken?
You see, you’re attacking people who post here in as personal a way as is possible on a discussion facility such as this. The retreating to ‘ah well it’s the way you read into it’ line doesn’t hack it. Nor does the ‘did I hurt your feelings’ line.
Janet, I ate my avatar
I guess we will just agree to disagree Giddy, as the first person to feel I have attacked them personally I’ll be sure to ignore you in future and I invite you to do the same, that way we will both be happy

Yep, Janet. When you run out of road, and don’t address the questions, it’s the ‘we will have to agree to disagree’ line. I’m sure you can describe that trait adequately in your own words.
Janet, I ate my avatar

Does anyone remember those halcyon days of 2014 when the then Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan told an Oireachtas committee that, out of a force of 13,000, there were just two malcontents?
These days, there seems to be a malcontent coming out of the woodwork daily. Today, Mick Clifford in the Examier reports it’s a Garda member calling for an inquiry into a criminal investigation of her sick notes, the sick notes were produced by her doctor brother but were signed by other doctors in the same practice. There was a criminal trial in which the Garda was accused of producing fraudulent documents, the trial collapsed last month after the Judge ruled the Gardai had unlawfully seized the sick notes, and that they should have had a warrant for the seizure; the trial also heard from medical experts it isn’t unusual for doctors in the same practice to sign sick notes produced by fellow doctors.
A month before the Garda was arrested, she made a complaint of bullying against the Sergeant who triggered the criminal complaint.
It’s not Serpico-level scandal but shows the Gardai are not the happy campers sometimes portrayed and they have the same HR, bullying and personnel issues as elsewhere; it also shows Gardai need education in when they can seize evidence.

Good news for Bertie Ahern and his Ecne Consulting
The Times Ireland reports “Bertie Ahern has been appointed honorary professor of peace studies at Queen’s University in Belfast, 21 years after the Good Friday agreement was signed. The former taoiseach will take up the role at the Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. It will involve giving workshops and masterclasses with students and taking part in university events.”
How much will Bertie earn from his new role? Who knows, we won’t because Ecne, being an unlimited company, doesn’t publish public accounts. Cute honorary professor.

Fair play to the pharma company and its “influencers” into blackmailing politicians into getting involved in the approval of a cancer drug. The drug is available in the private healthcare sector (how much are they paying for it, we don’t know but I’d bet it’s a big discount to what they’re seeking from the public system) and politicians are being pressed to make it available in the far bigger and far more lucrative public healthcare sector.
Hasn’t the same drug been assessed by the UK organisation which judges cost/effectiveness for the NHS, they decided not to pay for it on the public system either because it’s too expensive.

To be fair, Charlie, this has v little to do with its purpose as a house of religion but more as a beautiful piece of historical architecture.
