For people worried about the incredible stained glass rose windows of Notre Dame at least one has been destroyed, but the enormous one at the nave seems to be intact…

French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to rebuild the medieval cathedral of Notre-Dame after a major fire partially destroyed the Paris landmark.

Firefighters managed to save the 850-year-old Gothic building’s main stone structure, including its two towers, but the spire and roof collapsed.

Looks a lot better inside than I could have hoped having seen photos of the fire, so that’s something, at least.

Narrative shift. Macron was loosing hands down to the yellow vests. This is a classic diversion tactic of a regime desperate to re-focus attention away from their own failures.

Well that’s not what I asked about at all.

And I don’t think I agree with you either, for that matter.

Thankfully. I asked them to remove it as it was one of the most disgusting and offensive things I’ve read here in a long time but I think they’d already taken it down by that time.

People say such stupid things on the internet these days that it is genuinely difficult to tell what is parody, and what is in earnest.

any word how it happened? i know they were doing renovations at the time, did someone leave somethin plugged in, or dropped a fag or somethin? i’m surprised gemma o’doherty hasn’t jumped on the theory that it was refugees.

one of the oldest and most beautiful Mosques in the world in Aleppo is rubble, and it wasn’t a renovation accident

It is true that there has been a spate of vile vandalism against Catholic churches in Francis, just in the last few months.

Apparently the police are at a loss to know who’s doing it or if they’re connected.

But just because these acts of hatred are happening doesn’t mean accidents during renovations don’t happen. There is already conspiracy stories spreading online though.

well we did see footage of ISIS destroying churches of other religions so it’s possible/likely they did this too.

          1. newsjustin

Anything is possible, I guess. But it does seem likely it was an accident involving renovation work….a story as old as time!

yea, could well be the dopey apprentice who usually gets sent to the shop for tartan paint and a spirit level bubble left a generator on or somethin. But we’re in the next day now, and no word given to how it happened, means they could be hiding it from the public that it was refugees, just to keep the peace and not have people roarin at anyone middle eastern lookin. my money’s on the dopey apprentice, but anythings possible.

There has been a 74% increase in anti-semitic attacks in France: 541 crimes documented in 2018.

It’s a horribly uncivilised world. Always has been, I guess, but the immediacy of it is more obvious what with bloody modern technology giving us access to everything all day every day.

Apparently the six statues that were in the spire were removed during the renovations just four days ago. Many other valuable / priceless pieces were too of such fortunate fate. Small mercies…

if we were so called built in his image you only have to put a toe into internet mire to see what an ugly job he did,
        just depressing

  5. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

There seems to be a bit of a p*ssing contest going on amongst France’s richest to see who can donate the most, which is great news for renovations.

Yesterday a church was fire damaged. Today a species of turtle became extinct. One terrible, the other a disaster. Two French billionaires step forward to cure the problematic church. Go figure.
