      The person in the first tweet I saw about this was sharing a room with 3 others for €400 per month. She was one of 38 tenants. 38*€400=€15,200/month.

          It’s not pearl clutching. It’s called disgust.

          Just because YOU find it acceptable, that doesn’t make it acceptable in the main. This isn’t Ireland in the 50s or Ireland in the 80s. We are a first world country. We are by any measure a wealthy nation. I’m just not sure how exactly you see anything about this to be acceptable. It’s not.

        Ok, but what is the actual law that is being broken? No of people? No of people per room? Just wondering how the law is actually structured for legal vs illegal

          I’d be very surprised if any sort of a dwelling received planning permission to have 40 people living there.

          So, maybe not sure which law it would come under, but could be in contravention of some planning regulation.

            I would be delighted if Revenue were to investigate the landlord to ensure their taxes were up-to-date.

            Someone guesstimated that this place would net €15k monthly; there is no way that someone would be getting €15k lodged in their account each month and not receive a friendly enquiry from the Revenue Commissioners.

    Must be serious fire safety concerns in this house. There need to be limits on how many tenants can be in a property.

    I’d love to see the bathroom(s). Is there an equivalent row of toilets?

    Seems to be 10 fridges… 1 per room.
    So 4 per room… not sure where in East Wall there’s a house that size? Is it even a house? That’s gotta be illegal, right? Probably not…

      I pass that house all the time, I think it was renovated in the last couple of years. Looks a lot nicer outside than in. It also looks busy, but 38 people? Should be illegal.

      Interestingly, you can view previous Streetviews of the place, from 2009 & 2014 (click the “Street View – Aug 2018” at the top of the screen to select one). Have to say, they’ve done a great job of renovating what was previously an eyesore. Just a pity they’ve gone down this greedy route on the inside.

    Assuming that all taxes are being paid and that there are no fire hazards, what’s the difference between this and a hostel?

      Hostels pay rates, adhere to health and safety regs, have sufficient hygiene facilities for their occupancy and crucially aren’t intended or used for long-term accommodation

      Not registered as a commercial premises. Not subject to the same fire safety standards/inspections. Presumably people pay a deposit and have rental agreements too.

    I would be interested in seeing the arrangements with ESB Networks, they normally provide an 80A fuse at your meter into the house.

      So, I see eight fridge freezers which would all be plugged in and running at the same time presumably. 5 amps each? 40 amps total? Four washing machines, 10 amps each? 40 if they’re all running at the same time? How many ovens, heaters, microwaves, dishwashers, kettles etc? Seems like they’d be hitting the 80A limit maybe. I’m not an electrician.

    This makes Hong Kong homes look roomy. This needs to stop right now! This is how disease is spread and ghettos crop up. The safety concerns around this alone are hair raising, let alone the ethical and moral dilemma.

    When I was 23 I lived in a similar set up in San Francisco (25 people living in two connect houses, one shared kitchen, living room and several bathrooms) it was only for a year but there were several tenants there for years. It was social, fun and affordable. I made some great friends there too. I see no problem with this sort of set up as long as it’s safe.
