The greatest-ever football song is “Give it a lash Jack”, because, well, Italia ’90, but also because it manages to make “republic” a four-syllable word, and because almost 30 years later I can remember every single word.

In the summer, in the sunshine, we’re of to It-al-i-ahhhh
For a world cup, we’re gettin’ wound up to support the best team in the land.
For the first time and not the last time the Irish lads have qualified.
All the fans have a message for the manager – in unison they all will cry:

Give it a lash Jack, give it a lash Jack,
    never never ever say no
    Ireland Ireland Re-pub-eh-lic of Ireland
Rev it up and hear we go…

“Three lions on a shirt, jewels we made still gleaming.”
I only realised my mistake on that many years later. My words made sense, so I never questioned them.

So very catchy wasn’t it. Despite being a great toon it was just incredibly boring and sickly sweet in comparison to the madness that was going on here. Excellent work by New Order, plus I developed a crush on John Barnes after seeing him rap on the video with his adoring little smirk.

It can only be you never walk alone

A song sung so many times by the Liverpool cop
Its the white Christmas of all football songs timeless

  3. Cool_Hand_Lucan

The greatest-ever football song is “Put ‘Em Under Pressure” because Jack Charlton is a better rapper than John Barnes.

You mean the ripped off horselips song
But by god it was great
      Sent shivers down my back

      1. rotide

Probably better to know the name of the song before sneering :)

        (Its Dearg Doom btw)

        1. arthur_daly

          Sneering ?
One of the greatest Irish songs ever made then used to flog soccar
Remember in the day each night that was the song that ended the night in mcgonigles
Even Sunday bloody Sunday by U2 could not touch it

The greatest ever football song is “Sunshine on Leith” by The Proclaimers because it’s just a perfect fit for football. The song is a very emotional one. It very much evokes hope and heartbreak. It’s rooted in place. Just as the band are of Leith so are the football club that has made it their own. That connection to place and belonging is what football and it’s tribalism is all about. I’m not a Hibs fan but I tip the hat to them and their use of this song as a football anthem in particular. They are not an overly successful club. They’re from an area that has had it’s deep problems in the past. They famously broke a 114 year ‘curse’ by winning The Scottish Cup in 2016 and that relief, ecstasy, the underdog having his day is all entangled with the song and for those reasons I reckon it’s a beauty. Watch this and you’ll just want to sing and sway along.

The greatest football song is “The man don’t give a f” by Super Furry Animals. It’s not actuall a football song, but it was release with a picture of footballer Robin Friday flipping a V to an opposition player. It’s a great bloody song too, and better than any actual football song.

She does. Frequently. And in ways that would make a hoor blush.

          She’s hummin… a tune ;)

…goin on up to the spirit in the sky.
That’s where I’m gonna go when I’m high.
And when I’m high and dey admirin my chest,
I’m gonna give it ta Bertie he’s de besssst.

Spurs are on their way to Wembley
    Spurs will do it again

That’s all I can remember. What was that song?

  7. Ian-O

    The Chain by Fleetwood Mac.

Although that was the Formula 1 soundtrack on BBC.

Sorry, not into soccer at all.

  8. ouch

Hard to go against ‘Give it a lash jack’, but the Liverpool comeback against Barca reminded me of the line from the Anfield Rap..’ nobody knows quite what to expext, when the red machines in full effect’……Also had John Barnes getting some rapping practice in before cutting loose on ‘World in Motion’

Joxer Goes to Stuttgart summons up the spirit of ‘88, our first venture to a tournament

“What happened next is history, brought tears to many eyes
Oh that day will be the highlight of many people’s lives
Well Joxer climbed right over the top and the last time he was seen
Was arm-in-arm with Jack Charlton, singing ‘Revenge for Skibbereen”.

    1. Spaghetti Hoop

It’s a great song – never knew it was soccer-related. Screw World in Motion – this gets my vote.

    People love a free.

Greatest football was that time the man put the airbag in the netted area and my father respected me for a while . And my peers didn’t question my masculinity and take out their insecurity on their partners. That was a good 90 minutes and my liver is sore now. Thanks foot power men.

Until next time that I’m needing guilt free anger release and alcohol

sung by man united fans in praise of park ji sung to the tune of ‘lord of the dance’:

park, park it’s really weird to me
that you eat dogs in your own country
    it could be worse
    you could be a scouse
eating rats in your council house

    repeat

  12. Johnny Keenan

The greatest football song of all time is Strachan by The Hitchers because of the lyrics and the music

Any love for the Subbuteo sub-genre?

My Perfect Cousin – The Undertones

“Even at the age of ten
Smart boy Kevin was a smart boy then
He always beat me at Subbuteo
    ’cause he flicked the kick
    And I didn’t know”

    Or

All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit – Half Man Half Biscuit

“So he sent his doting mother
Up the stairs with the stepladder,
    To get the Subbuteo,
    Out of the loft.
    He had all the accessories,
    Required for that big-match atmosphere.
    The crowd and the dugout,
    And the floodlights, too.
And you’d always get palmed off
    With a headless center-forward,
And a goal-kicker with no arms”

No one metion Come On You Reds yet? It made me laugh when I was a wee one.
Though it is like asking what TV show moves you and me answering with Bullseye

Italia ’90, two words that conjure up magical memories, summertime and the living was easy, we had hopes and we had dreams. It was like Ireland was 18, she had just finished her Leaving Cert and now had two glorious, sunny, stress free months stretching out in front of her all the way to the horizon. The work was done, the exams taken, results day was unimportant for now.The 80’s were gone, a distant memory. The 90’s were here now, a new era, a new dream. The beautiful game, the beautiful man and his beautiful voice.

T’was the year to be of age alright Del Bhoy

      Berlin wall was gone
      May Heatwave
      Italia 90
Cork out’ve the blue bate Tipp in what is now known as the * “donkeys don’t win derbies” match
And went on to do the Double
I moved to Dublin that same year
Rented a 2 bed mews with a garden and a garage in Kenilworth Square for 36 punts a week

      Ah the craic

      Couldn’t do now of course

That summer actually gets remembered well in that book I keep forgetting about

      1. Vanessa (spiritually) Frilly Keane

        Oopps forgot the *
        * I know that’s not exactly what Babs said but that’s the way we all remember it

Sum’ting else about that Summer ’90 in Dublin
        Marlboro Lights
Culchees stopped buying ten Carrolls / ten Major
        We got fierce cosmo altogether
And Marlboro Lights only came 20s

      2. Otis Blue

Didn’t the Italia 90 homecoming to Dublin coincide with a visit from Nelson Mandela to pick up his Freedom of Dublin gong? “Ooh aah, Paul McGrath’s da” as the chant went that night.

Cork’s double at headquarters was notable for Teddy Mc winning AI’s weeks apart. A couple of weeks later i was on Leeson St bridge when a Nissan Bluebird pulled up and the bould Teddy asked me for directions to the Naas Road. Was honoured to put the great man on the right road.

        1. Vanessa (spiritually) Frilly Keane

          Yeah
Teddy was part of the gang I would’ve knocked around with back in Cork
Btw it was also a back to back Football medal that year for Teddy
( Although plenty lads would argue that one)

He’d got some height out if his jumps up ta the dropping ball
          Dint he?
Like for a lad that was just about average height

Brian Corcoran was also a dual player
I can’t remember if he played the ‘ 99 Football final tho’

  18. :-Joe

    Gazza’s – Fog on the tyne?(Just bizarre?)
Dunphy is a silly, na na na NAH – Italia ’90 in the terraces?
Ooh ah Paul McGrath’s Da! – At the speech of Barack Obama’s attempted coup in Dublin?.

While all good fun, I’d have to say
    Parquet Courts – Total Football
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP9l9HBJ1o0

It’s a fun thumping philisophical tune about collectivism vs individualism and not just from the narrow but fascinating point of view of “Totaalvoetbal” vs “Catenaccio” in the history and at the heart of the sometimes great international sport of footy.

    :-J
