The lopsided vote suggests a veto could be easily overcome. Ivey spokeswoman Lori Jhons said in a statement after the vote that “the governor intends to withhold comment until she has had a chance to thoroughly review the final version of the bill that passed.”

Why don’t republicans care about the destruction of innocent women’s lives?

      1. Rep

Because, no different to the hardcore Muslims, they view women as being a second citizen. You will note that there is no action whatsoever taken against the father in the current legislation.

          1. Sventy

            Nothing. Cos you’re off topic.

We’re talking about the prevention of abortion. You’re sliding into drink driving.

Stay on topic and tell us why you think legislation that saves human lives is wrong.

          2. Mickey Twopints

You’re really confusing me now. Why have you been drink driving? It’s very antisocial these days and the guards will give you pints.

  1. newsjustin

On a different, but related, news item, I see the START group of abortionists say they are carrying out 800-900 abortions in Ireland every month now. That’ll be 9,600-10,800 abortions per year.

      1. newsjustin

I wonder will that fact gain popularity in the discourse like the ‘9 women travelling for abortion in the UK every day’ did.

        It is a shocking figure.

      2. millie st meadowlark

And 30 women who have been free to make a decision about their body, without interference from the state or anyone else. As it should be for any living member of the irish republic

          1. Ian-O

Good lad, keep on with the shouting there.

I’ll listen when I see a sensible plan to house, educate and provide reasonable opportunities from the anti choice crowd for all those unwanted born children.

Constant shouting about your concern for the unborn is hard to take seriously when none of you have yet to propose how to solve all these problem, so best to stick with the shouting about the dead babies, that worked out real well in the Repeal referendum, didn’t it?

Actually yeah, just keep doing what you doing – I must admit I am supportive of your method.

          2. Daisy Chainsaw

What about the sperm whose bodily autonomy is ignored and destroyed everytime you knock one out?

          3. Orla

Ah Daisy, you know that’s a stupid argument. It weakens your position considerably to make it. Try again

          4. millie st meadowlark

The living, breathing woman – someone’s daughter, sister, friend, and mother – is more important than 12 week foetus which is not even sentient, which cannot survive independent of its mother.

And, as we saw last year, I’m not alone in thinking this.

          5. newsjustin

Ian-O your point of view is just the same as people who think we shouldn’t accept asylum seekers or immigrants unless we’ve earmarked housing, education, health services for them in advance. If we haven’t, send them back…

Or in the case of abortion, end their lives.

    1. Cian

Where did you get the figures of 800-900? I’m curious because official figures aren’t due to be released until mid 2020.

        1. Cian

No. They may be accurate. In 2016 there were 3,265 abortions carried out in the UK for women with Irish (RoI) addresses (another 700 with NI addresses).
          3,265 is 270/month.
This number under-reports the number of Irish women that had abortions in 2016 (some other women when to different countries, many got abortion pills online, others used a UK address).

      1. newsjustin

Cian from the START group of abortionist doctors. That’s what they estimate they’re currently carrying out per month. https://www.rte.ie/news/health/2019/0510/1048589-health-abortion/

“The START group, which represents about 250 medical professionals, involved in abortion provision says its members estimate they are carrying out between 800-900 terminations a month.”

To put it another way, about €360,000 – €405,000 a month for that group of doctors.

    2. realPolithicks

The whole point of repealing the 8th was to make abortion freely available to the women of Ireland and it sounds like it may actually be working. Well done to everyone involved.

  2. millie st meadowlark

Well this thread is suitably creepy.

My heart goes out to the women whose lives will be ruined by the hard line taken by lawmakers.

        1. missred

As my mate who mentioned her two abortions in a stand-up routine said, it’s a bit like being a fashionista, in that she now has a couple of stamps on her loyalty card

          1. missred

G’wan there Mickey, give us an auld spiel.

I’m afraid I cannot take tips on good jokes from someone who uses “not” as a punchline, not once but twice, which has made no one laugh since its brief surge in the early nineties. It produces twine and tumbleweed in its presence at the most

    1. millie st meadowlark

Nah. I reckon it might be because you’re a peddler of falsehoods, misinformation and hysteria, who doesn’t understand how to debate emotive (or indeed any) topics like an adult.

  3. bisted

…I used to go to Alabama with work and many of their laws seemed crazy but they looked like liberals compared to the DUP…

    1. Spaghetti Hoop

Experienced some of the US Bible Belt on a trip. Far more god-fearin’ than I expected and the preachermen are on the TV friggiin’ everywhere and not just on Sundays. Kind thought let them at it, it’s their choice of how to live their lives even if I dislike their bigotry. I did feel incredibly liberated though in comparison. My visit was pre-Trump but be gob the Donald sure knew how to turn these folks into his voters.

      1. :-Joe

Similar experience but you’ve got to try to call out the hypocrasy when and where you see it…

Those televangelists are among the worst parisites on human lives and most are guilty of at least two or three federal crimes.

Most mass abuse of people’s naivety and ignorance is only compounded by decent people doing nothing or choosing to ignore what they know is wrong. Lying by omission, flag waving intellectual elitism, deluded extremists etc etc.

        :-J

  4. postmanpat

Norn Iron has the highest concentration of god fearing Christians (that also hate each other) . its a kip . Young people of NI, move. Just move. There is no separation of church and state there , worse , there’s no separation of TWO main churches and state. As long as the pope and the archbishops have influence, the whole area is a lost cause. Move to England or move down here.

    1. Dough Berman

They want it challenged as a test case to ultimately go before the SC and, they hope, have RvW overturned.

    2. The Old Boy

As things stand, it isn’t. The courts will overturn it, which supporters of the bill expect. Their plan is to use the appeals process to get it into the US Supreme Court and effectively re-litigate Roe v Wade in what is perceived as a more conservative court than that of 1973.

      1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Justice Breyer stated in a dissenting judgment very recently that: “It is far more dangerous to overrule a decision only because five Members of a later Court come to agree with earlier dissenters on a difficult legal question… Today’s decision can only cause one to wonder which cases the Court will overrule next.”
I found it on Twitter. They didn’t say exactly which case it was.

        1. The Old Boy

The recent decision of Franchise Tax Board of California v Hyatt, which saw a 40 year old precedent about whether US states have sovereign immunity from suit in another state overturned. (They didn’t, now it seems they do.)

I haven’t thought much of the decisions of the US Supreme Court for some time. There’s far too much naked ideology with a thin veneer of jurisprudence on both sides to take it seriously.

          1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I can’t agree or disagree because I can quite honestly say I’ve never read a USSC decision. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever read a full IESC decision either. Top class law student, me. Though I remember I could always quote from a decision by saying ‘Budd J: “I concur”‘. Was it Budd or Hederman, actually? Can’t remember.
            Christ on a bike. I’m a disgrace.

    3. rotide

As has been pointed out, its a back door to challenge RvW.

At it’s heard the RvW was a privacy issue and if there’s one thing that conservative americans don’t like, it’s big govt interfering with the ordinary man. I have a feeling RvW will be upheld, even with the new appointments.

  5. Ian-O

Its only a woman’s body that is at risk. Raped 10 year olds being forced to give birth is not something they care about because Elijah and the clouds and the rapture or something.

    1. Sventy

You’ve just dumped a steaming pile of TDS into this thread in order to distract from the ‘Killing Babies’ issue.

But you forgot Uranium One, FISA, Huber, Horowitz, Durham and – of course – NXIVM, which is an actual trial about alleged sex traffickers with connections to the DNC big wigs – all of whom support abortion.

Michigan-won by less than a half point
        Wisconsin-won by less than point
        Florida-won by 1 point

He’s trailing all Dem potential challengers by significant margins in these states-Biden owns him,he’s tried ‘sleepy joe’ and ‘creepy joe’ but nothings working-he’s finished, quite simply there is no viable path to victory.

But yeah hate motivates, the white trash anti abortion rednecks will vote for him,so what.

      2. Ian-O

Yes, that’s it Sventy, keep on that track.

If I were you, I’d hang around outside maternity hospitals telling people these things.

Seriously, head on over to the nearest one now. I’m sure BS will be happy to accommodate your report of how you got on?

On a slightly unrelated matter, I see you are big fan of good old Donald.

If that vein, do you think all the born but unwanted children should be kept in cages on the border?

Asking for a friend who has been married multiple times and has unprotected sex (how Christian!) with porn stars when his wife has just given birth.

Gotta love those family values, eh!

          Tedious TDS is Tedious.

          Enjoy your fake news, suckers!

TRUMP 2020 – Making liberals cry again – for 4 more years!.

          1. millie st meadowlark

            Ah there we have it.

Just in case you were wondering, Zuppy, this is why you end up in moderation. Nice debating skillz pal.

          2. Ian-O

            OK.

So your real motivation is ‘making liberals cry’?

            Is that all? Really?

Sadly for you your debating skills and lack of imagination actually make me laugh – nothing better than to know the person you disagree with is not too bright, not too imaginative and not too articulate.

How do those ‘liberal chuckles’ taste?

          3. Sventy Too

So your real motivation is ‘making liberals cry’?

            Nope. Just a delicious 99.

Funny how liberals are really lovely though..

Do I love them cos they are like silly boo boos?

All debates must be very nice. (especially on this lovely site I’m banned from)

            Otherwise they’d always win prizes.

So long tootly pooters. Have fun arguing the rights to eat jelly babies.

The silver lining is if/when lovely liberals have jolly tea in the park then the boo boos will have no where left to dinkle-pie.

            And lovely-wuvvly will fluffty poo.

This is what’s been happening while some idiots finger-wag about how awful identity politics are and other idiots try to drag everyone down chan-generated black holes of stupidity.

I’m not sure I always thought he was a repressed prude who would rather self-imolate and lash himself unconscious than have good time self-loving etc..

To be fair, when he was on his special establishment-appointed media platform parapit slot of promoting fear, hate and misinformation earlier this morning he sounded much the same.

He was audibly frothing at the mouth a bit but also glowing with the excitement that his vagina monologue(REDUX) is still being seen as relevant, even if that’s only in his own mind…

Still it’s nice that they let him out of his mind dungeon and off the chain in public every now and again…

-the bill IF it gets signed,it would not go into effect for six months, assuming a court doesn’t put a hold on it.
-Alabama has done a lot ,to shed its ‘red neck’ inbred reputation, stunts like this by R’s harm that effort and impact inward investment, would you like get transferred there….
-its actually a really beautiful state and this is not reflective of the change going on,Huntsville is a young and hip city, with a good tech base and NASA,its a regional medical center.

If you’re in Alabama and you need an abortion, surely you can (as American citizen) go to another state to get the treatment you wish to get.

Southern state in non Liberal ideals shocker.

There’s some amount of hyperbole here from the usual suspects, take a deep breath and relax.

  15. rotide

As screwed up as all this is, it has to be said that there is nothing shady going on here.

These guys are all democratically elected and by a fair margin too. They are enacting this law by entirely legal (statewise) means and probably ran on a platform of this. Their goal is to reverse RvW by this route which is not only legal but they are doing it in exactly the most correct and legal manner (By that I mean using state legislature and the courts, I’m sure there’s some shenanigans going on). If they succeed, this won’t be a case of a few bad men subverting the laws of the land, it will be the will of the people.

    1. deluded

      Errant nonsense.
      https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/redistricting-maps/alabama/
The map near the top of this link is a good example of “gerrymandering”. The blue section (which we learn at the bottom of the page is mainly African American) also contains two major cities, so a large proportion of the population must vote in just one electoral area and the other areas wield disproportionate power.
Anecdotally I understand that many people in these other areas do not bother to vote as the odds are so overwhelming, the direct opposite of the proportional representation we expect as a democratic norm here.

      1. Johnny

The ‘law’ passed is unconstitutional,as acknowledged,it’s just another court case waiting happen, there are already quite a few.Complete total waste time by state officials, passing a unenforceable ‘law/bill’ that will only bring negative attention to their state, govr just signed it this eve, lots people calling for sports teams/celebrities/companies to boycott the state.

‘In all meaningful respects, this bill closely resembles an abortion ban that has been a part of Alabama law for well over 100 years. As today’s bill itself recognizes, that longstanding abortion law has been rendered “unenforceable as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade.”

No matter one’s personal view on abortion, we can all recognize that, at least for the short term, this bill may similarly be unenforceable. As citizens of this great country, we must always respect the authority of the U.S. Supreme Court even when we disagree with their decisions. Many Americans, myself included, disagreed when Roe v. Wade was handed down in 1973. The sponsors of this bill believe that it is time, once again, for the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit this important matter, and they believe this act may bring about the best opportunity for this to occur‘
