This morning.

A superintendent, an inspector and a garda have been arrested on suspicion of corruption in public office.

…the garda superintendent was arrested for suspected breach of the provisions of section 62 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005, which relates to the disclosure of information obtained in the course of carrying out duties.

A garda inspector has been arrested for suspected breach of provisions of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

And a member of garda rank has been arrested for suspected conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Good question, but the answer is, suspects generally keep their anonymity until they’re charged with an offence (and even then, with certain offences like sex crimes, they’ll keep the anonymity until convicted, and even then, on some occasions, they’ll keep their anonymity if the naming might identify the victim).

The media might be able to do a little more though by giving the age of the suspects or where they were arrested.

“Gardaí said the superintendent had been arrested for suspected breach of the provisions of section 62 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.”

Given the insidious Garda-media loop exposed last year at the Charleton (Disclosures) Tribunal, could it be this is the first time ever that a Garda has been arrested for leaking information? The leaking happens EVERY SINGLE DAY, on multiple occasions, it’s rampant.

Always good to wheel out the words of the disgraced ex-commissioner in 2014 on days like this

“I do respect the notion that gardaí, in certain circumstances, should not be investigating one another. That is why we have the ombudsman commission to deal with those cases. Clearly, here, however, we have two people, out of a force of over 13,000, who are making extraordinary and serious allegations. There is not a whisper anywhere else or from any other member of the Garda Síochána, however, about this corruption, malpractice and other charges levelled against their fellow officers. Frankly, on a personal level I think it is quite disgusting’.”

Also, good on Drew Harris, not only is he establishing a unit to deal with rampant corruption (falsified breath tests, unsound convictions, one quarter of Gardai not properly dealing with juvenile offences, financial irregularities at Templemore/Garda HQ, falsified or unreliable crime statistics, hourly leaking of confidential info to the media etc etc etc) but this looks like the first ever (if not, it’s extremely rare) arrest for leaking info.
