Sabina Higgins greets Britain’s Prince Charles in Glencree, County Wicklow yesterday
Steady on.

It’s wonderful that we have good relations with the British Royal family and all but is there a larger purpose to these visits and their frequency and the level of deferential intimacy on display? We are a Republic after all carrying a complicated history with these people….[we are] not hoteliers to the British elite…
Anyone?

“… is there a larger purpose to these visits”
– yes; promote understanding between neighbours, to reduce the likelihood of people starting to kill each other again. FML…

Great for promoting the land to visitors across the water, and indeed around the world.
The English Market in Cork was always an attraction, but numbers surged after the Queens visit nearly 10 years ago.
Wicklow is the Garden of Ireland and everyone should try to visit it. BTW nice to see Sabina tickling a smile out of the generally sombre Prince.
I have two Wicklow trips this month and in July, it is indeed the garden of Ireland…
Dunno. A lot of Wicklow looks like a quarry.
I suspect you either aren’t familiar with Wicklow or with quarries.
I am actually.
Nonsense, Inchicore is the Garden of Ireland.
3.5 million British holiday here. …..great to promote the Emerald Isle!
The Republic of Ireland haven’t been in conflict with the United Kingdom for almost a hundred years. Maybe it’s time to gently lower the hatchet into its hole and cover it over Pete me old mucker.
But Republicans and others have been on conflict, so debatable.
The Brits still occupy six counties of our country.
No amount of obsequiousness behaviour will change that fact.
We don’t want them, the embittered, sectarian nutjobs. Her Majesty can keep them.

Hi Millie – I’m from the ’embittered’ place you describe.Whenever the British relinquish our 6 ‘northern collective’ ,as Seamus Heaney most eloquently described it, we will then commence getting our 26 counties back.
Grand job – once you become self-supporting and manage to introduce gay marriage and abortion legislation, be sure to give us a shout.

I always struggle with the word ‘occupation’. It’s as if the tanks rolled in 100 years ago and whisked a quarter of the country away from us.
If a border poll was called and the people voted to stay in the UK, would it still be occupied?
Perhaps the ‘Brits’ will leave NI…and Scotland, Wales and England and go back to Normandy where they belong!
Yes, and they can speak Chaucer’s Middle English Franglais.
The true Britons are the Welsh
What is “deferential intimacy”?
c;mere and i’ll show you
You never disappoin
i do aim to please
You definitely never disappoin, I’ve always said that about you.
thank you, RealP’ick

That’s just Sabina. She’s a thespian. I worked with her once on a comedy show. Michael D is now her straight man.
Eamo with the name-drop ;)
It’s funny, I actually read that as she’s a lesbian and Michael D is her straight man.
Fun fact: Sabina was a bridesmaid at Luke Kelly’s wedding.
Just waiting for the invitation to rejoin the commonwealth…which would sort out the border problem for brexit and leave us free to play both sides – trading with europe and britain without restrictions. Have been waiting for this since the whole brexit nonsense started. Lets see how it plays out…

I thought all these visits might be King-ing practice for when he lands the job and craves the popularity. He knows we are receivers of British media and perhaps believes he has a fan or two here who don’t give a fiddlers about his mistress-now-wife becoming Queen of England. Also, ‘Uncle Dicky’ loved it over here.
Sabina looks like a warm, hospitable woman who likes people.
So would I if I lived in that gaff
