God Made A Bad Plant

Bishop Eamonn Walsh, Vice Chair of the Bishops’ Drugs Initiative, welcomed the intervention by Cannabis Risk Alliance:

“There always has been a concern about the effect [of cannabis] on the brain and that it’s something that is going under the radar,” he told The Irish Catholic.

To stop people having epiphanies about the existence of god when they’re high on the reefer.

Bishops’ Drugs Initiative sounds like an obscure psychedelic band from the late 60s.

I am all for legalising cannabis for both medicial and recreational purposes. Would personally never use it myself. It doesnt agree with me… Also one should not minimise the impacts it can have on mental health (like any substance inclucing alcohol). Legalising this and therefore regulating it could actually improve the situation as there would be some control on what you are getting. Some of the stuff these days is (apparently ) like rocket fuel…

It might also help provide a safe environment for the drugs long term effects to be studied.

Regulate it like alcohol. The hooch you brew yourself will be stronger and more dangerous than a pub bought pint.

“….Research has shown that alcohol abuse causes an 8-fold increased risk of psychotic disorders in men and a 3 fold increased risk of psychotic disorders in women…” according to the wikipedia article below.
      It’s something I’ve noticed myself.

“…Some studies indicate that cannabis may trigger full-blown psychosis. Recent studies have found an increase in risk for psychosis in cannabis users…” (emphasis mine)
A bit vague considering the resources and research from countries that have cannabis for generations. It reminds me of the mystique around absinthe which was largely related to under-eating and overdosing.

I hope this group has a protocol which they’ve called the Catholic Risk Alliance Protocol?

This was just published, lots criticism of the study and quite few people who support it.

“Differences in frequency of daily cannabis use and in use of high-potency cannabis contributed to the striking variation in the incidence of psychotic disorder across the 11 studied sites. Given the increasing availability of high-potency cannabis, this has important implications for public health.“

The RCC has been more far harmful in my opinion.

How many suicides has it, its members and the society they shaped caused?

Not sure why we listen to them anymore now we have seen their real, dishonest, malicious nature.

Says the Bishop who skulls back crucibles of 17% alcohol alter wine in full view of mass goers.

“This is an extremely significant paper. We need to utilize every possible treatment in helping people with chronic pain to find other ways to manage their symptoms and in people with opiate addiction to find relief,” said Dr. Julie Holland, a psychiatrist in New York and former assistant professor of psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine.“
-link to paper and summary here, the Catholic Church was and is a lot more dangerous to your mental and physical health that weed ever will be.

The usual suspects up to their old tricks…. plus a collection of extremely conservative doctors calling themselves the “Cannabis Risk Alliance” having their letter published in The Spineless Times….

Old Ireland and the fanatics haven’t gone away, they’ve just migrated to the next place they can cause trouble.

    Begone with them!

Why anyone continues to pay attention to anything the catholic cult has to say is beyond me, let them rot away like the cancer they are.

I am generally liberal – maybe not everyone’s kind of liberal but definitely some kind of liberal and I suspect there are a lot of people like me who make up the center vote and are concerned about how the culture is steered and where it’s headed….and some comments cause us to ask ourselves if we are feeding monsters.

In principle, supporting availability of abortion, cannabis (or frankly anything to help chronic pain relief, including euthanasia) is pretty easy to go along with…but as my Dad said to me 20 years ago, be careful of people use moral arguments to achieve amoral ends – and be weary of the cultural institutions engaging in impartiality (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/21/opinion/alabama-law-abortion.html). All of a sudden, it’s harder to support. On top of that, we have a “business-friendly” climate where the govt feels its role to step back when it should regulate. Imagine Michael O’Leary running a euthanasia clinic, a methadone clinic or an abortion clinic….or a eugenicist running an abortion clinic (see Marie Stopes).

The argument for legalising weed needs to be a little more honest than pushing an agenda for recreational usage on the backs of people who suffer chronic pain. The comment by kellMA is the kind of honest up-front logic that the modern liberal progressive brigade would dare not be so generous to engage in.

    1. deluded

When I looked at the harm and psychosis caused by alcohol and apply the arguments above, well, all of a sudden, it’s harder to support. On top of that, we have a “business-friendly” climate where the govt feels its role to step back when it should regulate…
