Instead of the papers leading with ‘Fine Gael gets a thrashing” or “Leo’s first election is a wake-up call’, they are leading with talk of a general election. So, well done Leo, you played that well and the journalists fell for it. Weird they couldn’t see they were being played. Perhaps they could, but went along with it because it was a different angle to the weekend stories of Green surge.

    1. MaryLou's ArmaLite

That’s because FG didn’t get a trashing. They didn’t have a good election, but not awful either.

Now, SF/IRA they got a trashing.

    2. dav

hopefully he does and gets the same treatment form the electorate that Mrs May got across the water

    3. eoin

Yellow journalism from the Times and Examiner.

Why would Leo call a general election now. FF are edging FG in locals. In Euros, looks like FG and FF will both lose one TD, and by elections in six months will hardly change the Dail arithmetic. Also, if there was chaos in our neighbour over Brexit before, it must surely be peaking now that there is a leadership change in the Tories. Also, look at today’s Euro results in the UK.

      1. Cian

If FG wait another 2 years until the natural end of this term – there will be 50-odd new Green councillors that will (by then) have 2 years experience… imagine if they all decided to contest the general election? The Green wave could become a tsunami.

I can’t see FG (or FF) wanting to wait that long.

Where are ya going with a Thrashing

In the main the Blueshurts vote has held

      Shinners took an unmerciful hiding

And the eFFers are delighted with themselves

      1. eoin

A thrashing at SF is right, with 872 of the 949 local authority seats declared, SF have 74 compared with 159 in the 2014 local elections. And the collapse is right across the country, Dublin and elsewhere.

Why? It’s not the “Green surge” if both FF and FG are adding seats to their 2014 tally.

Questions for SF and its director of elections Pearse Doherty today.

        1. Nuala MC Namara

According to Dr Rory Aherne yesterday”: In Dublin FG&FF combined just got 31% of 1st preference votes ,less than 1/3 while parties of the Left got 48.1%!”Pity that so called Left parties don’t form some kind of Alliance like they did before 2016 General Election re Right to Change!
Note: National housing emergency worse in Dublin!
The turnout was under 50% Nationwide,I can’t understand why people don’t vote.If people disillusioned with politics then that’s a good reason to go out to vote surely!?

        2. Vanessa the Holy Face of Frilly Keane

Don’t know what they were thinking putting Pearse in as Director of Elections

He made a hames of GE’ 16
          Even in his own Constituency

Mary Lou needs to knuckle down
          Quick and fast
And get a grip of the Shinners Party Electoral Strategy herself
‘Cause delegating it is just not working

Too many lads flying solo there and not sticking to the plan

          1. eoin

Yep, Pearse was also the boyo charged with investigating the bullying allegations which led to the resignation of councillors like Noeleen Reilly (who’s just romped home in Dublin as an Indie) and Seamie Morris (who’s just romped home in Tipp as an Indie).

Not to say he’s not a good finance spokesperson, but he hasn’t done well with these internal party matters.

          2. Cian

            in 2014 Lynn Boylan topped the poll with 83,264 first preferences;
On Friday she came 6th with only 39,387 first preferences.

            Was that Pearse too?

    5. ReproBertie

Please explain to me how increasing their share of first preferences from the last local elections is FG getting a thrashing.

My LEA rejected FG thankfully. The downside of it was returning two FF councillors which is just embarrassing.

  2. Spaghetti Hoop

The Independent very clever with that Sumo photo / Tory leadership contest.

  3. eoin

As of 5am today, in the UK where there are 73 MEP seats up for grabs.

“Overall, out of 64 MEPs declared so far, Mr Farage’s party has won 28, the Lib Dems 15, Labour 10, Greens seven, the Tories three and Plaid Cymru one.”

Counting should conclude today, and we should even get results in Northern Ireland where there will be one SF, one DUP and there will be a battle for the third MEP seat, will it be UUP, Alliance or even Green, I hope Alliance.

  4. GiggidyGoo

Gemma O’Doherty has kinda shut up her detractors. I wonder where Ben Giltoys transfers go?

      1. GiggidyGoo

If you look at it that way then 80+% rejected FitzGerald on first preferences.
And FitzGerald got a lot of media exposure.

          1. millie st murderlark

I like those stats. Thank you Cian. A very happy Monday to you my friend.

        1. ReproBertie

Giggidy, that 80%+ rejecting Fitzgerald was exactly what I posted when the exit polls came up and someone tried to claim the Irish electorate were rewarding her. Spin for GO’D all you like but the numbers don’t lie.

      2. Vanessa the Holy Face of Frilly Keane

        Hey Repo
Any chance to lashing up the Southern spreadsheet

        Ta
        V

          1. Vanessa the Holy Face of Frilly Keane

            Ta Repo

I’ll ping Gavin there now and if I get anything I’ll throw it up

Do you still folly me on the Twitter?

    1. ReproBertie

Was it the link to the count spreadsheet or pointing out that she received less than 2% of first preferences that for my comment deleted?

    2. rotide

5000 first preference votes is shutting up her Detractors?
      .
All it shows is that there’s 5000 gobpoos buying into her lunacy which is just as worrying I guess

      1. ReproBertie

6,659 first preferences to be exact.

Ben Gilroy now claiming that the returning officer has told him that thousands of spoiled votes are actually votes for him, Hermann Kelly and GO’D.

        1. Cian

There are a lot of spoiled votes: 15,345 – that is 4%
Does anyone know of this is unusually high? Or how they were spoiled? was there a theme?

          2015 Spoilt: 6,368 (1.8%)
          2009 Spoilt: 6,054 (1.5%)
          2004 Spoilt: 13,239 (3.0%)
          1999 Spoilt: 6,013 (2.1%)
          1994 Spoilt: 2,917 (1.0%)

    3. Vanessa the Holy Face of Frilly Keane

      TBF
She’s her nose ahead of Gilroy ATM
And if she can keep it there
Gemma might get a daycent bump from his transfers and put her ahead of PBPs Gillian O’Brien
      And if that happens
( And I think it might)
Gemma O’Doherty is likely to make it to the 11th count
And that will prove everyone wrong

      Trust Democracy Folks
And maybe stop calling it a joke or a fix

      1. eoin

Depending on how well she does with Ben Gilroy’s transfers (and they were thick until the very end when there was some unpleasantness), she’ll likely beat Mark Durkan and may even overtake Alex White.

        1. ReproBertie

She’ll need almost every single Gilroy vote to go to her to catch Durkan and more votes than Gilroy has to catch White.

          1. Cian

She just passed Gilroy, so will be in line for some of his 8,600 votes.
She is a long way (3,000) behind Higgins. I don’t think she’ll catch Higgins.

          2. Vanessa the Holy Face of Frilly Keane

I hope she remembers to thank the Cultural Marxists for the transfers that put her ahead of Ben

            Only for them

She would have been eliminated and Ben would’ve thrived for another count on her transfers

          3. ReproBertie

I’d expect her to get a lot of Gilroy’s votes and certainly a lot more than Higgins so she may well catch her.

Cuffe is still 7,500 off the quota so there’ll be nobody elected this count.

        2. rotide

          Are you all on drugs?

She has a small chance of overtaking higgins, but I dont think that will happen.

Anything more than that, it’s just people here being wrong yet again

          1. Cian

            Computer says…. no.

GO’D got 1,850 of Gilroy’s votes. Higgins ‘only’ got 288… but is still 2,400 ahead

          2. Vanessa the Holy Face of Frilly Keane

            Ah c’mon Row
If you can’t admire the girl for making it to the 9th count from 1.8%
At least give the irony of getting 20.4% of her total poll from Unicorn loving Cultural Marxists and Soros sum’ting or others A bitta’ve a nod

And if you think about it
If she hadn’t a fallen out with Ben the 2,727 he gave over to Lynn and Clare might have gone her way
Same for the 288 he helped AM Higgins with
            That’s over 3,000 votes there

          3. rotide

She’s out and didn’t even pass higgins.

Like I said, you’re all as barking as the people that actually voted for that person

          4. Vanessa the Holy Face of Frilly Keane

            Ah would ya stop Row
            This is a count FFS
We’re supposed ta be contriving and computing
            Confusing and confunding everyone

Lemme roll around in it for a bit

Journalist Nicola Anderson and “group editor” Fionnan Sheehan due back in court today where the DPP is pursuing them both for a story last November which allegedly led to the collapse of a rape trial. The case has been adjourned four times so far and it may be adjourned today also.

Not a word in any of our press about the separate proceedings by the DPP against a journalist and editor at the Mail after a story about the Lucan child murder trial. That’s due in court at the end of next week, presumably after the murder trial has concluded.

Doesn’t the Irish press just fill you with proud.

    1. rotide

      Let me get this straight.

First you complain about a newspaper alledgedly interfering with a trial by reporting on it.

Than you go on to give out about other newspapers NOT doing the same thing.

  6. eoin

Hehe, Tommy “milkshake” Robinson the “patriotic” anti-immigrant anti-Islam candidate in the UK’s Euro elections lost his deposit, blaming the “establishment” for his failure.

Even when the Brexit party has romped home in the polls, the Brits still didn’t vote for Tommy. Good lads.

  7. bisted

…the brits seem to have voted overwhelmingly for clarity and the parties of obfuscation have been punished…the leave message has been reinforced and the politicos ignor it at their peril…

    1. ReproBertie

Ignoring the Conservatives and Labour (because their position is still unclear), Remain parties received a higher percentage of votes than Leave parties.

      Clarity indeed.

      1. bisted

…brexit party were explicitly leave…libdems were explicitly remain…others can only be interpretated reflecting the already registered 52:48 leave inclination of the voters…as with Scotland and 6 Counties the wishes of the electorate are being ignored and the democratically elected representatives are being punished for their betrayal…

        1. ReproBertie

“as with Scotland and 6 Counties the wishes of the electorate are being ignored”
I’m not sure what you’re saying here as Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain. Are you suggesting the UK government spending the last two years and more trying to implement Sasamach was a betrayal of the voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

With 371 of 373 counts completed in the UK Brexit & UKIP combined are on 34.9% while the Lib Dems, Greens, Change UK, SNP and Plaid Cymru, all explicitly Remain, are on 40.4%.

    see now

Aine Lawlor just demonstrated on the R1 news in interview with Eamon Ryan this morning what’s coming around again for the greens…

she’s straight in with a straight question: “do you support water charges?”
Ryan: evasive dancing around the subject waffle

I’ll tell ye now. I’m glad for the greens, I really am & I think it’s great there’ll be a voice for climate change etc. BUT that vote they got wasn’t about saving the planet or compostible coffee cups. Green Wave/tsunami/whatever hyperbole? it was largely an old fashioned PROTEST VOTE. the kids in my world went for Cuffe & Indos and explicitly denied establishment parties a vote – main reason cited was homelessness & housing. pointless or not that was why. I’ve a 22 year old niece away in Holland who now is saying (already) that “she’s never coming back as what’s the point? unless she becomes a brain surgeon or barrister she’ll never own a house”

the kids are idealistic maybe (and I hope those a wee bit older still are too) but don’t underestimate their practicality.

I hope (really really hope) Varadker gets giddy and calls a GE. but he won’t be let, you can be sure FG HQ aren’t that stupid.

    1. Spaghetti Hoop

My cupboard would get more votes than him if it stood.

*Oh, it did and it topped the poll!*

  9. ReproBertie

McGuiness elected on the first count.
    Ming in second place.

    Quota – 118,986
    McGuinness (FG)- 134,630
    Ming – 85,034
    Carty (SF) – 77,619
    Walsh (FG) – 64,500
    Casey (Racist) – 56,650
    McHugh (GP) – 51,019
    Smith (FF) – 42,814

The rest are out of the running.

      1. ReproBertie

Yeah, he’s in the running for the 4th seat to be sure.

Michael O’Dowd of Renua picked up 6,897 votes.

  10. Cian

Looks like Waterford and Cork have reject directly-elected mayor proposals!!

    No mayor for Dublin then?
