Boxer Katie Taylor, accompanied by Sports Minister Shane Ross, returns home after being crowned the new undisputed world lightweight champion following her 96-94, 96-94, 95-95 win over Belgian boxer Delfine Persoon at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night.
Meanwhile…
Have written to @wicklowcoco this evening asking that the Council commission a permanent and public tribute to Katie Taylor in Bray. She has done our country proud and here in County Wicklow we are particularly proud of her amazing achievements!

Putting up monuments to people who are still alive is in poor taste. It would be better to fund a gym or perhaps an award for female athletes to honor her.
Katie Taylor’s boxing for Jesus. Praise the Lord (and don’t mention the gays).
Can’t you just box some sense into them?
What is that utter shovel doing there trying to leech off Katie’s moment?
Because he’s an undisputed lightweight too. Of a different nature…
And 3.2.1, not to be upstaged by Shane Ross, the Shinners come out to show us why they’re the undisputed lightweight champions of the world. This from the SF Wicklow TD John Brady (who is highly unlikely to keep his seat at the next general election)
“In the past, Katie has been granted the freedom of County Wicklow; Daniel Day Lewis is the only other person to hold this accolade. Numerous civic receptions have also been held to honour her many achievements. In 2013, I also proposed a special ‘Katie Taylor Sports Scholarship’. This is now in place and is run every year by Wicklow County Council and is awarded to a young Wicklow sportsperson to help them excel at their sport.
“I have contacted Wicklow County Council and have asked them to look at a number of things that should be done to mark the fantastic achievement by Katie Taylor. I believe a statue should be erected in the centre of Bray to honour Katie. I also think that renaming a road in the town, possibly the Southern Cross Road, would be very fitting for the occasion.
“I have also proposed that Ballywaltrim Recreational Park in Bray would be renamed the ‘Katie Taylor Recreational Park’. As a young sportsperson, the park is where Katie would have trained and is central to her community of Ballywaltrim. Her 2012 London Olympic final was also shown on big screens to thousands of supporters in the park.
“I have also asked the council to look at organising a homecoming for Katie in Bray. I think that Katie’s achievement deserves nothing less than these measures, she is a role model of so many and also a hero and I think the people of Bray, Wicklow, and Ireland would expect nothing less.”
96-94, 96-94, 95-95 or 94-96, 94-96, 95-95

Johnny Nelson is spot on in that video.
This “working for a living” goes on , doesn’t it Mr Ross?
Shade of Charlie haughey with Stephen roche in Paris all those years ago..
Yeah but Charlie went the extra mile climbed up in the podium in Paris
He did not, did he? Jay-sus…
Tomorrow is the 1-year anniversary of the bloodbath at Katie’s dad’s gym in Bray. Brave of Katie to engage in the public welcome home today, she refuses to fight in Ireland over “significant security concerns”. You’d think someone would ask a minister of the government about this sort of stuff, but I suppose it would be impolite.

It’s fairly straightforward… her Da is a toerag, she’s not.
exactly, sins of the Father’s
Don’t know about her dad, I do know he’s suing some media for defamation after reporting of the shooting at the gym last year. But, can you imagine, Mick McCarthy or James McClean coming out to say “we’re not going to hold any more Republic of Ireland soccer internationals in Ireland anymore because of significant security concerns”. There’d be outrage at the suggestion our country was so dangerous. And yet, Katie Taylor says it and we all pretend it’s grand. Well, it’s not grand.
have you got a link for where katie refuses to fight in ireland?
Of course not because Ireland’s undisputed Lightweight Champion of the World never said it.
You want someone to ask a government minister about a private citizens personal opinions?
Katie you won’t .Hold your head up high and enjoy ignore sour grapes
Harris is some quick off the mark. Finger on the pulse so to say. The FG leech machine is in full fettle. Not so quick in dealing with his job though.
Doesn’t he have a local garda station to reopen or something
Lets be honest… she lost the fight, but thats boxing and some times you get a dodgy decision.
In fairness, Shane Ross is a contender for undisputed lightweight champion of the world, but he’ll never best Katherine Zappone.

Did you find that link to Katie saying she refuses to fight in Ireland over “significant security concerns”?
Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he’s madly googling for anyone ever awarded a ‘7’ in the history of pro boxing.
Yeah, we can add the “10 point must” to the list of things he knows nothing about but happily shares his opinion on.
