Please play “Cats In The Cradle” especially for my dad/da this Father’s Day because we’re gonna have a good time then!

“what I’d really like Dad is to borrow the car keys, see ya later can I have them please” Great line.

Please play “The Nightfly”, by Donald Fagen especially for my da this Father’s Day, because 25 years after he animatedly explained to 7 year old me why he plays it on every car journey, long or short. He was right. The entire album is a masterpiece!

    Steely Dad, etc…

  3. Ian-O

Please play ‘Waterloo Sunset’ by the Kinks especially for my Dad this Fathers Day as it was my Mothers favourite song and it always brings a smile to his face!

I’ve warned you about this before. It’s not all about you, dearest.

  4. Specific Gravity

Please play Cinema Paradiso by Ennio Morricone for my dad this Father’s Day, because it is his all time favourite, and while he would pretend to have no time for poetry, this captures him nicely and I get the chance to relay it here without his knowing:

    With hands like spades
And a heart full of love
    My father, my father.

Please play something by Doris Day for my Dad. I select this, because I would never select this.
When I was an obnoxious teenager, my Dad took me to work with him and taught me to drive for a whole Summer.
I made him listen to some terrible 90s crap on the radio, and looking back I think what a wonderful patient man he was for putting up with me.
If I could, I’d go back and remove the fuse from the car stereo so we could have talked more.
    Thanks Dad.

Awwwwwwwww. Maybe your Dad enjoyed I’m Crucified by Army of Lovers.

    2. deluded

      That’s actually cheating.
My dad was into David Irving and stuff which was awkward but he understood nature and science and would know the planets (once you get in the habit it’s fun. Even in the city you can see Venus, Jupiter and Mars. It always reminds me of him).

Please play Still fighting it by Ben Folds. Not only for my dad but it really gets what it means for me to be a dad. The lyrics:
    ‘Good morning, son
    Twenty years from now
    Maybe we’ll both sit down
    And have a few beers
    And I can tell
    You ’bout today
And how I picked you up
    And everything changed’

    Simple, emotional, brilliant.

  7. Termagant

Please play Dr Hook – anything off their appearance on the Old Grey Whistle Test especially for my da this Father’s Day because that’s the cassette tape that’s been stuck in the radio of his van for the past 14 years and it’s taught me a lot about life

    1. Termagant

Yeah but he nicked the idea from Bodge

Cinnamon Girl was originally mine, it was just about cinnamon in those days of course.

  8. Emah

Please play Christy Moore’s “I’m an Ordinary Man” especially for my da this Father’s Day because he was a great fan of Christy and we listened to hours upon hours of him on the cars tape player and my Da, from the outsiders point of view, would have appeared to be just that…. An Ordinary man. But to me, like most Da’s to their young kids, he was a Superman in times that were (I’m now old enough to realise), as Christy describes, “hard” to say the least, but he never let us know that.

Glad I got that off my chest….

My dad, Big Seamie, RIP – we drove all over Ireland to watch Tyrone play football (he played in 56/57 – beaten by Louth – I know? – they got a two in a row) – on a Sunday the radio was always RTÉ 1 on AM wherever the match was he kinda hated that I’d play T-Rex on my Sony Walkman that he bought – “Ride a White Swan”. I did catch him nodding along at the steering wheel listening, I miss him.

  10. Harry

Please play “My Dad” by Chet Atkins, especially for my Dad this Father’s Day, I still miss him.

    ————My Dad Lyrics ————
When I was young my Dad would say
Come on son and let’s go out and play
    Sometimes it seems like yesterday
When I climbed up the closet shelf
When I was all by myself
Grabbed his hat, fixed the brim
    Pretending I was him
No matter how hard I try
No matter how many tears I cry
No matter how many years go by
    I still can’t say goodbye

  11. Lilly

Please play ‘The Tumble Down Shack in Athlone’ especially for my dad this Father’s Day because for some reason he taught me the lyrics to it. He would accompany me on the piano as I destroyed it.

It wasn’t his kind of music; it wasn’t my kind of music, I was only ten or eleven. I can only surmise it was because he wanted to see his ould mother once more. He would only ever have seen photos of her as she died bringing him into the world. May they both Rest In Peace.

‘Oh! I want to go back to that tumble down shack,
Where the wild roses bloom ’round the door,
Just to pillow my head, in that ould trundle bed,
Just to see my ould mother once more.
There’s a bright gleaming light, guiding me home tonight,
Down the long road of white cobble stone,
Down the road that leads back, to that tumble down shack,
To that tumble down shack in Athlone.’

Was there a winner of the record store story competition from some weeks back?

I may be late to the party, but please play anything from Makem and Clancy for my recently deceased Dad.
He just loved them and in 1990, he loaned me his Volkswagen Passat to get 6 o clock Mass on a Sunday evening (I was an early driver).
When I came out (in my state of grace) I discovered that the passenger window had been smashed in and the stereo stolen.
I drove home in tears and Dessie (my dad) said not a bother and replaced the window and eventually the stereo. I was very apologetic cos his “Best of Makem and Clancy” tape was in the tapedeck (no cd players in those days)…… it solved my next Father’s Day present, but now I can only give him a few flowers…..
