A Limerick A Day

A tree – a gift from French President Emmanuel Macron to US President Donald Trump at the White House in 2018 – has reportedly died

While we all thought it lovely to see
Trump and Macron plant a tree
In a week, at the most
The oak gave up the ghost
And died in the land of the free

I am not surprised: it would have been relifted and brought to quarantine, and such repeated uprooting was likely too much of a stress on the young tree.

A slightly different fate awaits the shamrocks presented by our Taoiseach each year on St Patrick’s Day. They are apparently removed and incinerated. Only the bowl is kept. So much for the luck aspect :)

My understanding is that as part of the gift of shamrocks, the bowl is also considered an gift and goes to the US National Archives. Each year then is a new bowl.

Again, as I understand it, when a president has completed his term of office, they often create a ‘library’ and many of the gifts given them during their tenure may be loaned from the National Archives to this library. I know Ronald Reagan has a couple of the Waterford Crystal bowls presented to him in the Ronald Reagan Birthplace Museum in Illinois (I stopped in one time in passing with my daughter) and they are marked as on loan from the Archives.

The two bowls were of differing designs so I imagine each year the Taoiseach (or more likely someone in the Protocol Section of the Dept of Foreign Affairs) needs to choose a new one that is not a repeat of previous ones.
