Dry Your Eyes

The Whiskey distillery behind the Writers’ Tears brand has provided ‘significant’ financial support to Sweny’s pharmacy.

Bernard Walsh, managing director and co-founder of Carlow-based Walsh Whiskey – maker of Writers’ Tears and The Irishman whiskeys – said the company made a “significant contribution” to the pharmacy’s rent, after finding out that it had recently doubled.

…This coming Sunday – Bloomsday – Sweny’s will also be giving out drams of Writers’ Tears to visitors.

In fairness.

Great that Walsh Whiskey are doing this, but who is the landlord? Doubling the rent on a business/ building of historic and cultural significance is pretty poor form.
Is this the type of thing that a government body could purchase. I know that’s “interfering with the market” and all, but anyone have any knowledge in this area?

…fairplay Walsh Whiskey…I’ll do a bit of canvassing for them round my local pubs…didn’t Garrett the Good buy Bewleys back in the day…sounds like a compulsory purchase order is needed…

Does this place make any money? What does Sweny’s do to generate its own income?

it’s run by volunteers, and generate cash through donations during events (regular readings mainly) and selling lemon soap. and it’s a second-hand bookshop. mainly, though, it’s a big enough draw for tourists. would be a shame to see it close.

Maybe they should just place a plaque on the wall and move on
