From top: Anastasia Kriégel; Ana’s parents Geraldine and Patrick Kriégel outside the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin this afternoon

This afternoon

Two 14-year-old boys have been found guilty of the murder of Ana Kriégel in Lucan just over a year ago.

The jury found the first boy murdered her by causing severe and extensive injuries to her head and neck. He was also convicted of violently sexually assaulting her.

The second boy lured the schoolgirl from her home, knowing what was going to happen, watched the assaults and covered up afterwards.

The boys were 13 at the time and had pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Horrible story all round, hopefully the verdict gives some small comfort to her parents.

Anybody know what happens to minors in this instance? I mean can they get a life sentence?

    1. Jeffrey

No, Life sentence which would be mandatory if they were adult does not apply as they were both minors (13) a the time of the events.

      1. The Old Boy

The last time there was a child-on-child murder conviction in Ireland was in 2004, when Mr Justice White imposed a life sentence, which was affirmed by the Court of Criminal Appeal. He was released after serving 12 years. As Jeffrey says, it is not mandatory.

RIP Anastasia (Ana), adopted from Russia at just two years of age, she did not have an easy time at school in Ireland, horrible bullying and body shaming, an outsider who craved friendship, the most brutal death at the hands of two evil teenagers.

    1. eoin

I also hope the Judge finds that the exceptional nature of Ana’s murder allows him to name the two murderers, something I understand is an option within his discretion despite the general rule that young criminals aren’t named to assist rehabilitation.

It might assist us in understanding how two 13-year olds committed such a horrible murder so that we might try to prevent controllable environmental factors. Was it internet pornography? Was it violent video games? Where does this evil come from?

I would want to know if these two were living near or associating with anyone that was close to me, even if that is in 10 years time. The State might think the tariff is 10 years or whatever, but would you want your daughter dating one of them without knowing who they are?

          1. postmanpat

“internet pornography? Was it violent video games?” Okay Hillary Clinton, whatever you say!!

          2. ComeAtMeBro

‘Internet pornography’ or ‘violent video games’ – if this was the cause would have a a lot more murders my friend.

This crime needs to be studied, two 13-year olds murdered a 14-year old and one sexually assaulted her. That’s landmark and the nation will be talking about this murder in 2119.

As for environmental factors, RTE reports

“The judge ruled that if Boy A were to be found guilty, the [vast, 10,000+ images and videos on his phones] pornographic material could be helpful to a professional in determining how or why the offence occurred, but he said that was a separate issue to the trial. ”

But it won’t stop there. The principal of the school has questions to answer, the parents have questions to answer. At this point, it seems to me inevitable the two murderers will be named by the Court.

Yes, the bullying was just as horrible as her vicious murder. Bullying is so dangerous as it amplifies and leads to tragic conclusions such as murder and suicide.
I too think we need to assess child murderers, examine their motives and psychological state, and there was much opposition to this in the James Bolger post published on Broadsheet some months ago.
RIP Ana. A beautiful girl should not have died like this.

      1. Pat

        What a meaningless phrase
Should a plain looking girl have died like this?
Also – If not like this, how should a beautiful girl have died?
        No offence

        1. Brother Barnabas

i very much doubt hoop was referring to ana’s physical appearance when she said “beautiful”

          1. Pat

Me too. She let herself down badly with that lazy oul platitude is the point i was making

    RIP Ana.

Let’s hope her parents and family can begin to grieve now, that they can have some little peace of mind from this. My heart goes out to them. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare.

  5. Dub Spot

    RIP.

Kudos to Broadsheet for respect and dignity during the trial – well demonstrated. Let’s not blow it at the end.

  6. Daisy Chainsaw

RIP Ana. No amount of justice will bring you back to your parents but I hope they take some comfort from the verdict.

  7. Jdawgs

Absolutely so sad. So hard to understand why or how young minds would want to commit such horrific acts to a person. Tragic.

  8. Hector Ramirez

I don’t know if the judge can, but I hope they put tight restrictions on the papers. As is usual here, when the case is over some of the papers will come out with some horrible stories.

    1. Brother Barnabas

      +1

some of the comments and ‘information’ that emerged about ana kriegel during the trial were entirely unnecessary – and must have made things harder for her parents. hope we don’t see more of that.

      1. The Old Boy

The Irish Times published a 16,000 word “full story” within minutes of the verdict.

        1. millie st murderlark

The journal have three stories relating to the case up already. Gutterpress at work.

        2. millie st murderlark

Admittedly, one is an explainer re the boys anonymity, which is actually useful.

The DPP has taken proceedings against the publishers of the Irish Daily Mail and editor Sebastian Hamilton and journalist Helen Bruce. The matter has been adjourned a number of times while the trial was ongoing but they’re due in court on 4 July.

        1. eoin

“counsel for the Irish Daily Mail Eoin McCullough SC said the headline had resulted from an editing error and that the “very experienced reporter” in court, Helen Bruce, was not at fault in any way.

A line in the body of the Mail story, which was also viewed as prejudicial by the court, was inserted by a member of the editorial staff, not the reporter, he said.

“I’m absolutely certain it’s not her fault,” Mr Justice McDermott said. The DPP concurred and dropped Ms Bruce’s name from the contempt charge.”

Hi Órla, yes, that appears to be the case though the dropping of Helen Bruce from the proceedings has not yet been reflected in Court Service records, which as of this afternoon still had her named as a defendant.

  9. dav

I honestly wish the Judge kept up his court order limiting the reporting on this case as some of the headlines during the trial were sensationalism at it’s worst.

  10. Vanessa the Holy Face of Frilly Keane

Fair play to Broadsheet for keeping this contained
I personally found it very distressing as my teenager is the same age

‘ couldn’t even listen to the news reports

    RIP Ana
    Justice did you right today
And I hope your parents get some peace

    xV

    1. Dub Spot

Agreed. Very difficult listening and reading. Well played Gardai, Judge, legal players and courts service.

IMO the containment should continue until sentencing has been done. Media – social and traditional – will lose the run of themselves with commentary over the next week or so. It would be fitting if Broadsheet were a shining example of the opposite until sentencing: graceful and different – be like Ana.

      RIP again, Ana.

      It’s so shocking . . .

      Peace to her parents.

  11. dylad

It’s depressing that this and cases like Graham O’Dwyer, Mr Moonlight etc. dominate the news, especially when there are salacious details. These are private tragedies and none of our f##king business.

    1. Christopher

Is it heartless of me to not care about the boys and their families? Boy B father’s outburst in the courthouse shows their entire lack of remorse or admittance of culpability.

      1. Al Bin Man

        I don’t think it’s heartless

But legally they are children who destroyed their homes and families – some compassion is appropriate

    2. Fred

Sympathy for the boys families yes, sympathy for the 2 boys? No.
      Rot in hell. Murderers.

  12. Fred

This was no spur of the moment act driven by alcohol or drugs. Thought out meticulously planned callous horiffic murder.
Poor girl fought for her life against pure evil and died a death you wouldnt wish on anyone.
Think what she went through, think about her parents, friends, the garda who found her and his family.

    Picture it, for 1 moment.

Stop excusing evil, they should spend the rest of their lives in jail.

  13. Bluebill

I CANNOT HELP FEEL GREAT SYMPATHY FOR BOY B – AS FAR AS I CAN MAKE OUT HE NEVER LAID A
HAND ON ANA – HOW DOES HE GO DOWN FOR MURDER THE SAME A BOY A WHO WAS CLEARLY GUILTY. ?
