Anyone know what has happened to Princess Latifa since Mary Robinson’s ‘mercy mission’? Are we meant to pretend all that didn’t happen?

You would think the Law Society and in particular the Irish Women Lawyers’ Association might be concerned but, alas, no.

Anyone?

      How so, old boy?

I met her a few times as a child and teen and she had a huge impact on me. She was such a positive role model for me and quite a few of my friends. It’s terribly sad to discover a childhood hero is not all they were cracked up to be.

She was extremely hostile to them. A bit like Thatcher, she didn’t seem to trust other women or like to associate with them. She certainly didn’t assist in anyone else’s career development. Of course, there could be more than a touch of jealousy in what I heard from women barristers and solicitors.

At the risk of sounding like I’m making excuses for her, perhaps something of a product of her time?

But for someone who brands herself on being socially progressive, that account does sound disappointing. Though not the worst of her crimes, so to speak.

          1. The Old Boy

That is of course true. The handful of women solicitors around the Four Courts had to listen to endless “jokes” about soliciting on quays from colleagues who ought to have known better. There is no doubt that women in practice in the 60s and 70s had to be better practitioners and have an exceptionally thick skin to achieve the same level of success as their male colleagues.

We have barristers from King’s Inns Dublin who were solid SIPTU supporters whoring themselves out to questionable Brexit related redundancies at the moment.

A reminder that Mary Robinson is winding up her climate change foundation.

    https://www.thephoenix.ie/2019/05/robbos-foundation-joins-extinct-list/#.XNQkemtNdX8.twitter

Its vision was “by 2020 global justice and equity will underpin a people-centred, developmental approach to advancing climate justice and more effectively addressing the impacts of climate change.”

At the end of 2017, the Foundation had net assets of over €1m, and had a cash balance of €1.1m. The Irish government and taxpayer was a big donor. Will Mary be returning the unspent money? W.S.F.

Ian-O , She donates her “papers” and gets a massive tax break in return . No idea how you would value those ” papers “, but the greater the “value” the bigger the tax break .

Her credibility lost its foothold with me
And I suspect most of the Irish Voters too
when she fecked off out of the Presidency to her next gig

Her grubby ambition wouldn’t let us get a look in from the moment Kofi hung up the phone with the offer

Diarmuid Ferriter casts some light on these papers. Valued at €2.5m and due a tax break of €2m, apparently. Thin gruel, it seems. It’s an interesting piece overall.

“The website of the Mary Robinson Centre lists the contents of the archive, including:
“2,000 books on law and Human Rights (many of these presented to Mary Robinson and signed by the author); 3,800 periodicals, many of them with contributions by Robinson; A Master File of the President’s engagements from Dec 1990 to Sept 1997; The symbolic light in the window of Áras an Uachtaráin from Mary’s Presidency; Robinson’s personal diaries from 1967 to 1990 and from 1998 to 2001; 325 Archive Cartons containing documents ranging from the Anglo Irish Agreement to Women and Equality . . .”
