Tim O’Brien, in The Irish Times, reports:
Some women pilots [working as self-employed contractors] in Irish-registered airlines are being told they have a choice: terminate their pregnancy or terminate their employment, the president of the Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association (IALPA) has claimed.
…Capt Cullen told the Committee on Employment Affairs and Social Protection that many pilots were afraid to speak up.
He said women pilots were being told not to get pregnant, and that women pilots who present as pregnant were told: “you have a choice, you terminate your employment or you terminate your pregnancy”.

Your employer can’t instruct you to terminate a pregnancy
Well, they can. But they may not.
As I say to babyAndy regularly. Not about terminating pregnancies, I hasten to add.
That is not in dispute.
However, a pilot without a valid medical authorisation is just another passenger, and a contract pilot without a medical is out of a job, regardless of the underlying reasons. ‘Twas ever thus.

If only we had all been exposed to some sort of belief system that actually demands you treat others as you would like to be treated yourself, that calls for love and understanding, that asks that you love your neighbour and show humility and compassion.

It is complete word spin, and hype of a non-event scenario.
What about the ladies and gentlemen around the country who are self employed in other areas of industry, outside of aviation, shouldn’t there be an expression of social outrage at say the woman who runs a florist, or maybe a small accountants practice, or retail outlet. Will those who are offended by the above Siptu headlines above, support and campaign for the women in other industries, or is it just this matter since it’s on a digital forum?
Be you male or female, as a self employed individual you will NOT be supported by the state at any level.
I’m torn on this ‘gig’ economy – specifically when it applies to well-paid, professional jobs.
Hear me out please.
Say a company is looking for staff and the advertise a fulltime role, for €X per annum (which if divide by 210[1] working days is €Z/day) – full benefits, pension, training, maternity, health insurance.
They also advertise a temporary contractor role – same job description: but as a contractor. This contractor doesn’t get paid holidays, sickleave, pension, or the other rights. They are paid double the day rate (but only for the days they actually work).
The fulltime is more secure, the contractor is better paid.
If people choose to go contracting until they suddenly get sick/pregnant (or the company doesn’t renew their contract) and then start companioning – I have no time for them.
If a company forces the contracting only, then I would side with the worker. Do we know if the airlines we offering fulltime roles as well?
[1] 210 days = 260 weekdays in the year, -10 bank holidays -25 days leave, -5sick days, -10 training days
There are tax implications too unfortunately – its not just a risk/security assessment. The state is losing a lot of tax revenue due to bogus self employment.
Yep the pilots interest group is taking the piss here. You either want to be a PAYE employee or you want to be a contractor. Construction sector is different, employers there are deliberately deceiving workers to sign up as contrators and are under paying them and taking advantage of their lack of fluent English.
