    Christ.
How much was Gazza drinking when he was partying in his youth? I’ve often wondered, following George Best’s well-publicised addiction, if alcholism is a result of excessive partying or a reason for and can it be either or a combination of both?

Quite complicated really. Some people seem to be predisposed to alcoholism and others drink to the point that they are dependent on it just to get through the day.

Can happen to anyone at any time if they drink regularly enough. I do feel sorry for Gascoigne for his problem but he appears to have been an idiot before he became an alcoholic so there is that.

I’m reading a book on addiction by Gabor Mate – he says, with hardcore addicts, more often than not it’s down to trauma experienced in early childhood development. The drugs provide temporary relief from emotional pain carried deep within their psyche. Not sure about those who become addicts after becoming famous though – I wonder are there cases where it’s down to the experience of fame alone or in all cases was there already some underlying traumatic childhood experience..

By the way, with Gascoigne it’s not just the booze – he’s taken extreme amounts of cocaine over the years and seems to be still battling that addiction: https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/gazza-shown-pleading-cocaine-heartbreaking-16233935

Its a bit of a chicken egg question. A lot of people suffering with depression are also alchoholics as they attempt to self medicate but then alchoholism also causes depression…. George Best didnt need to be at a party to drink…

So very sad, Gazza is one of English football’s all time greats.
