# Curriculum Vitae

Martin Skutella was born in 1969 in Freiburg im Breisgau. He studied mathematics and physics at the RWTH Aachen University and completed his studies in 1995 with a diploma thesis on the modular representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. He got his PhD in 1998 at TU Berlin under the professorship of Rolf H. Möhring in Combinatorial Optimization. His PhD thesis on "Approximation and Randomization in Scheduling" won the Dissertation Award of the German Operations Research Society and the Honorable Mention at the Richard-Rado-Prize Competition on Discrete Mathematics. After one year as a postdoc in Belgium with Michel X. Goemans, he was a visiting professor at the Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics at the University of Bonn before he returned to Berlin. He was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, U.S.A., before he was awarded the habilitation at TU Berlin in 2002. In 2003 he accepted a position as senior researcher in Kurt Mehlhorn's group at the Max-Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken. In 2004 he was appointed chair of Discrete Optimization at the University of Dortmund.

Since 2007 Martin Skutella is Professor at TU Berlin's Institute of Mathematics. Since 2015 he is also faculty member of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He spent the academic year 2013/14 as a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, where he received the International Visiting Research Scholar Award from the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies. In 2015 the Einstein Foundation Berlin awarded him an Einstein Professorship.

Martin Skutella's research interests are focused on Combinatorial
Optimization and Efficient Algorithms, at the interface between
Discrete Mathematics, Theoretical Computer Science, and Operations
Research. He is a member of the editorial boards of several
international journals. Between 2009 and 2012 he was editor-in-chief
of the *Notices of the German Mathematical Society*, and as
such also board member of the *German Mathematical
Society*.

Since the end of 2018, Martin Skutella is chair of the Cluster of Excellence MATH+.
