Muslim Sisters of Éire tweet:

We received this message last night. The reason we are sharing this here is to show you the kind of stuff we have to deal with sometimes. This won’t bring us down, it only makes us stronger and pushes us to keep going. It is being dealt with by the Gardai #SayNoToRacism

Utterly disgusting, whoever sent it should be arrested. Ireland is a country for everyone, except these neanderthal bigots, they should F-off and never return.

The amount of fake/sockpuppet FB accounts spewing total bile like this on Ireland-related social media these days is something else. Likely to find a few on any Irish Times story on FB, for one such example. Really horrible stuff.

Spewing vitriol like that on a daily basis can’t be good for the mind and soul

“If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it.”, Roald Dahl, The Twits.

We need an adult conversation about migration in this country. The CSO says the fertility replacement rate is 2.1 but our women are only delivering 1.8, so we need immigration just to maintain the population (or maybe consider tax breaks or new cars á la Orban to encourage fertility).

The CSO only provides reliable stats on migration at Census every five years. They give an annual estimate which has been notoriously inaccurate. We need good quality quarterly figures, and I’d recommend the Labour Force Survey be enlarged to get those figures. There will be a €cost with getting accurate migration info, and we have an open border with the North and not great documentation at certain points of entry, so it can’t be 100%, but in a nation of migrants, we need to do better than we’re doing.

We need to have a policy and targets so people know what the position is right now and what the plans are for the future.

BECAUSE OTHERWISE, you’ll get fear-mongering, hate-speech, far-right, xenophobic, little Irelander crap like that above.

This is true, we need a policy for immigration to allow for economic migrants as well as a more humane system of dealing with asylum seekers. We have plenty of room and there are plenty of jobs. We may lack the housing at the moment but that’s fixable with some decent policies at local and national level. Unfortunately we have a government with no interest in doing anything and an opposition content with its impotence.

        You’ve a lot to learn

            1) Build taller buildings and increase density, especially in cities. Take it out of local councillors hands. Give proper direction and resourcing to planning departments

            2) invest properly in infrastructure and don’t get held hostage by NIMBYs.

This will get you surprisingly far. The money is there, it’s bureaucracy and local politics that kills everything.

“Our women”?! If the birth rate is low then we need migration otherwise we will end up with too many elderly people and not enough young people to look after them or to pay tax to fund pensions and healthcare. Paying people to have kids is a recipe for child abuse and neglect.

      1. shortforbob

Bizarre to jump to the conclusion of “Paying people to have kids” when people clearly already want affordable housing, affordable childcare, and better family services in general, so people can have families without being crushed into penury.

Agree. Everyone should have to register their address with a state body within 5 days of moving house and within 5 days of leaving the country. This will allow the quarterly register to function correctly.

A large fine/deportation for anyone in breach of this law.

:( unfortunately you’ll only catch the very very IT illiterate ones out like that @Nialler

very true martco, I’d imagine the person who posted that wouldn’t have much up there anyway

Repulsive stuff. I hope the Guards are on it.

It should be easy enough to catch the person, using technological and other means. The message itself is a bit strange:

I’ve never heard the word ‘shitskins’ – maybe I’m moving in the wrong circles, or maybe it is just not in use in Ireland. In which case, does anyone know where it is in use? It might help narrow down the life path of this moron.

The ‘ya cunts’ sounds like a local, right enough, but the obsession with marrying white women is off, even for one of our cretins.

The ‘faggot paki traitor’ line doesn’t ring true either. We don’t have that ‘paki’ slur here at all. We have gay slurs, of course, but ‘faggot’ is not the top one at all. And ‘traitir’ is complete nonsense – in the context of Leo it doesn’t make sense to us as an accusation – how exactly is he being a traitor to his country (whether his country is Ireland or ‘Faggot-Paki’)?

Then there’s the non-colloquial use of ‘got rid of’, and the American spelling for favour.

Basically, I think whoever wrote this would be really easy to identify for whatever unit of the Guards have the unpleasant task of keeping an eye on racist pond-life.. . or else it’s actually a fake, invested by someone outside of the country to sow division.

Either way they can FRO, sisters – once you’re in, you’re in, and we’re all in it together, religion and skin colour has nothing to do with it!

Varadkar could be regarded as a traitor to conservative values in FG, with respect to social conservativism – himself being deep in the neo-liberal wing of the party. He is not a conservative, unless your view of conservativism has something to do with low taxes and cutting public investment (i.e. economic conservativism).

Varadkar is regarded as a traitor to any kind of nationalist – himself being the first openly pro-federalist leader on the EU position. If asked, he would hand over our sovereignty without thinking twice or consulting us.

He was promising when he entered politics in 2007 – fresh, focused, transparent, open etc but has since revealed himself to be a climber, unworthy of his current station which he openly describes as CEO of Ireland.

He could be a nice guy (he comes off a touch smug/disingenuous) but there are no shortages of reasons to criticise Varadkar.

36 posts reduced to 22? And that is including 1 which is the same twice over. the deleted ones were mostly by david, then there were replys to deleted ‘david’ comments which were left without context, also many duplicated comments by another overly keen commenter.

I am welcome to repeat my comments because – beyond changing curse words to silly euphemisms, moderating aggression, bullying and hate-speech and deleting the efforts of banned commenters returning under new usernames – it is not the policy of this site to censor comments.

    1. McVitty

Yeah, they deleted my comment as well because it was a reply to deleted comment by david, who is banned.
