Sporting wing of the PIRA breaks into song as they pass the musical wing of the UDA. Nothing to see here.

AND we’re off again with the annual stock-piling of Shredded Wheat, burning of tri-colours, provocative emblems, marching bands, goading, bottle-throwing, hatred…and Buckfast.

    Seriously, grow up NI.

The vast majority of people don’t want any of this anyway, but who is gonna go tell the local hoodies that build them, the same people who put up flags in peaceful areas? You get caught complaining and you’re a target.

That’s true enough, as far as I know.

There’s a house on my road which lies vacant for most of the year but come 11-13 July you may be sure that the NI owners of the property are down for a visit. They want nothing to do with it, like so many nowadays.

Dublin will be full of Northies this weekend. My family there always chose Donegal as the bolt-hole and I’m reliably informed that the the usual craic agus ceol up in the north west reaches even greater heights than that there bonfire, hai.

Yea we used to call the annual exodus the Oxegen festival. Ever been in Bundoran for the 12th?

        3. Scundered

Yeah that’s true, I grew up in such an area, and the way it was in 1970s is the catholics went to Donegal and the protestants would go to Portrush area or anywhere north Antrim, for their holidays.

      2. Jeffrey

Euh… traveling up north last weekend I was astounded by the amount of King George and union Jack flags on houses…its as lively as ever this sh…

It depends what you read out of that, are they people who are proud of identity or is it more sinister, Is it pride or is it hatred or are they both the same thing. Usually the areas flying flags wouldn’t be full of well educated people who think about the meaning of the flag exactly. So you may be giving them too much credit to think they even realise what they’re doing.

Cultural exhuberances in other countries can articulate the gaiety of nations, though I grant that the dark-uniformed leggy girls in the video have charm. Is the bonfire construction meant to represent the Tower of Babel?

  4. Murtles

There goes all them trees when that is lit. Doubt the hoodied builders have any sort of a fire plan in place.

Don’t all these pallets belong to a Oz packaging company whose island of Ireland HQ is in north Dublin. Who are their directors again?

      1. eoin

Imagine if your company’s products (which you still own, you only lease them to others) ended up on an illegal development, what would have to say about the matter and would you be surprised if the Gardai came calling to the doors of the directors?

If they’d decided to use pellets instead of pallets would they be getting back money? Mind you it wouldn’t have been half as impressive in size.

  7. Slightly Bemused

I hope none of those pallets are the treated ones. They will need all the ones they can get once they crash out of the EU,and WTO rules apply.

  8. Dr.Fart MD

if that band can take over a street to play their divise rubbish then those lads can sing what they want from their bus. fair play.

    1. A Person

Really? Let’s all sing sectarian songs? Shure there is no harm. And BTW just to prove you are thick as poo post it online

      1. McVitty

Says the guy from the Republic of Ireland – here’s a better idea, go up there yourself this year and see for yourself that it is one identifiable group proudly celebrating the oppression of another, in their own country I’ll add.

I suppose you think there is something indigenous about making a bonfire that high..that health and safety standards need not apply.

        Bloody contrarian west-Brit.

  9. Grace

How high is that?! That is insane!
How are the authorities in the North allowing thuggish kids to get away with this?

  10. bisted

…six of one and half a dozen of the other…years ago it would have been pretty different…those players would have been forced from the bus at gunpoint and humiliated, or worse…that bus would have passed the spot moments earlier where Aidan McAnespie was shot by a british soldier…it’s called coat trailing…both sides are pretty good at it…
Mickey Harte apologising is a bit rich though…making catholic ritual part of the Tyrone team training regime is much more offensive to some people…

Another year, another round of behaviour that further separates them from the UK (barring some nuts in Scotland).

  12. Charger Salmons

As a disinterested English observer can I just say, belt away lads.
There’s nothing better than watching Irish people continue their centuries-old hatred of each other over religion.
    Marvellous,what ?

Yes,every single one of Ireland’s international football campaigns since the era of Jack Charlton.
        Truly atrocious.

    1. millie st murderlark

You made that joke last year. Kind of loses some of the zing when you’re repeating your old material like a masticating cow.
