So basically it was a remake of Hear No Evil See No Evil. They couldn’t hear stevie and Stevie couldn’t see them.

€130 for a gig? plus €8 for each pint of beer served in a wobbly plastic cup that spills all over your hand . Serves you right.

Ha. I was at the gig and it really wasnt great. The DJ playing cds in the middle of the set for 20 minutes while stevie just sat there was bizarre.

He’s pretty sick, been on dialysis and is undergoing a kidney transplant in a few weeks. So the DJ break in the middle of the set was to allow Stevie a break. It was a bit crap to be fair but he’s just not well enough to do a full 2 hour/25 song show.

I don’t buy tickets for gigs in 3 Arena for this very reason, the sound is absolutely dreadful. It ruined the Massive Attack gig for me

Ludovico Einaudi in the National Concert Hall 2014 – a life affirming event.
Ludovico Einaudi in the 3 arena 2018 – a frustrating experience with poor sound, crap service and bizarrely hostile security.

I’d love to know how a modern, purpose-built concert venue is having such a mare with the sound? Is it some quirk of the mix position? Unavoidable issues with the room shape/seating design? Does it have to do with mixers unfamiliar to the venue or bands bringing their own PAs?

I was at a Flight of the Conchords gig there a while back and you could just barely hear the lyrics. Forgivable at a regular gigs where you probably know all the words anyway, but at a comedy gig? Bonkers.

I was at Eddie Vedder last week and the sound was fantastic… apart from the obnoxious people behind us talking [eventually they went outside].

The 3Arena is woeful. On top of the serious sound quality issues it also has no coat checks, which is a huge problem for any night time gig outside of July/August. They claim its for crowd control reasons, but plenty of much larger capacity venues elsewhere have coat checks elsewhere and manage fine.

Its just not worth paying the premium price to go to a gig there.

    1. Spaghetti Hoop

      * much smaller capacity venues you mean.
When gig tickets at the Point became inflated in the noughties (and never deflated post crash), I did wonder about value per €. So I calculated I could see about 4 x nostalgic gigs at the Olympia or about 6 x new band gigs for the price of a Point gig. With no queues or rip-off extras. Nice intimate gigs with a couple of pubs nearby.

      1. Zaccone

No, I mean much larger capacity venues. The o2 Arena in London for example has a 20,000 capacity – versus our 3Arena’s 13,000 – and it has coat checks.

So the argument that the 3Arena couldn’t possibly run a coat check because of it’s “large” capacity, which is what they state, is nonsense.

Not to say the 3Arena in particular isn’t poor on the sound front (I haven’t been since it was the O2 and enjoyed the handful of gigs I was there for) but I feel a big gig never passes here at this point without the media reporting on complaints about the sound.

So while I imagine some of these complaints are legitimate, I can’t help but feel some of it is also because people either don’t really understand how sound works in a gig setting or have unrealistic expectations about it to begin with

The Point? Always produced dreadful sound quality at gigs. Last time I was there I had to use the gents toilet. (reaches).

      1. Spaghetti Hoop

Thought you were recommending a band there. You’re right – retches. Christ the absolute stench of men’s piddle.

Oh and the absolute crap sound as well.

      2. for whom, the bell trolls?

Please refer to my earlier posts ( that got me banned) on the noble arts of gandering and goosing
