One Fine Morning from Apocalypse.
It shows the beautiful timbre to his voice in the most mature way yet. The lyrics are beautiful, the arrangement with the jingling piano is gorgeous. The whole thing is comforting as a blanket. It’s rare that a 9minute song, as simple as this can keep you engaged for the entire length of it, but this does it beautifully.
Dress Sexy At My Funeral, as it’s also what’s written on my organ donor card.
My favourite Smog song is ‘Rock Bottom Riser’. One of my children had died a few years previously and I was trying to come to terms with the loss. I remember having a very dark day and then I heard this song and it gave me hope and reminded me to reach out to my loved ones for support. I’m doing okay now but I always thank this song for lifting me on that dark day and reminding me to reach out to others when feeling despair.
I hope Bill Callahan gets to read your powerful & moving comment Sarah. For a listener to get that kind of connection and solace from a song must be the highest achievement a musician can imagine, and I’m sorry for your loss and glad you are doing OK.
I literally just bought tickets to this.
I’m so excited. My favourite song is America. It was the song that led me to listen to every one of his albums.
Armed with this knowledge I shall too. It’s a long shot admittedly….
Start with All Your Women Things and take it from there…
His back catalogue is frickin awesome and there’s hardly a better lyricist about.
Here’s Gil Scott-Heron’s take on I’m New Here.

Every funeral I go to now I have my favourite Dress Sexy at my Funeral stuck in my head.
I also love the part he sings on my favourite Joanna Newsom song, Only Skin.
Real fans already have their tickets, also clearly Sarah Kennedy has to win!
+1
