From top: George Chinnery and the gin which takes his name

Leah Kilcullen writes:

Chinnery Gin is inspired by Dublin and the Old China Trade, with defining flavours of osmanthus flower and oolong tea.

The name comes from George Chinnery, a Georgian-era portrait artist who lived in Dublin, before setting sail for India and later China.

His work from Canton is considered part of the historical record of the Old China Trade, but his time in Dublin is largely forgotten.

We are delighted to be working with the Chester Beatty Library for a talk by George Chinnery biographer and East Asian trade art specialist Dr Patrick Conner, to delve into the artist behind our gin’s name.

There will of course be some gin-tasting with our distiller as part of the event too, and delicious canapes from the Silk Road Cafe. Tickets are €35, and include two Chinnery Gin drinks and the gin-tasting.

An evening with George Chinnery; The Man & the Spirit (Chester Beatty)

I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time owing to my secret life as a victorian prostitute
‘ELLO DEARIE, FANCY A GOOD TIME THEN MY LOVELY??!!
    * raises petticoats and jiggles ankle seductively*

    1. A Person

I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time owing to the fact that I want to be be really pretentious at my next dinner party. I will even buy those massively oversized gin glasses.

‘”I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time owing to my disappointment that my bottle of a vastly inferior gin is running low much earlier in the day than usual.”

‘”I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time owing to the fact that I stopped to push an aul fella with a broken down car out of the middle of a junction this morning when everybody else just passed him by. I dunno, not world changing really but it happened to me once and I got beeped at and abused for 40 mins while I awaited recovery vehicle. He was very nice about it, much gratitude shown, and he could then go and have a cup of tea while he waited. Maybe that’s reward enough. I do like my gin though!

Fair play to the marketeers for lashing a veneer of refinement and tradition over weakly flavoured ethanol.

Is this spirit being produced in Dublin using our scarce water supply? Are they paying for it, or are they doing a “Guinness”?

    1. Leah

Hi Eoin, you can find out how Chinnery Gin is made here https://chinnerygin.com/gin/. We are an independently owned and operated company and our distillery, where the vacuum distillation takes place, is in West Dublin, I assure you we pay all our rates :)

          “A depressant in large quantities.”

Now, am I talking about gin or eoin?

          Answers on a postcard, please.

Oh thanks a bunch Leah, now I feel obligated to say something nice. I hope your product is a success, I remember Belvedere, Zubrowka, Grey Goose when they were struggling in the early 1990s to get a foothold and look at them now. Perhaps in the future, if you’re expanding, you might consider setting up production near the Shannon where they have plenty of spare water apparently.

Also, where can one buy a bottle of Chinnery …

      2. Slightly Bemused

Thanks, Leah. That link lead me to a nice internet ramble about the different distillation methods. Being a whiskey lover, I also perused which whiskies used vacuum distillation, and was surprised to see that there appears to be a bit of snobbery there, with many of the older distilleries preferring ‘traditional’ methods, while vacuum distillation is more or less limited to newer entries to the market. I must try different ones to see if I can tell the difference.

Out of curiosity, is it the same with gin? Do older gin distilleries frown on the use of vacuum distillation?

        1. Leah

Personally, I have not heard of any snobbery. I think the gin market is much more open to new ideas and innovation compared to whiskey, but again that’s a personal view, having worked in both industries.

          1. Slightly Bemused

Thanks for the insight. I would imagine while a personal view, your is likely more valid than mine which is only based on a few minutes of internet search. I appreciate the quick response, too :)

    2. David

I’m the distiller. You’ll be glad to hear our condenser doesn’t run off the water supply. Instead it is cooled by a recirculating chiller. So in fact we use very little water to extract our flavours (also happy to clarify that Chinnery Gin has bags of flavour!).

We are signed up to Bord Bia’s Origin Green programme and committed to continually reducing waste and inefficiency.

I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time* owing to my scathing lack of whiskey.

    (I’m in work…..)

But the talk does sound fascinating all the same.

I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time owing to it would make a great gift in 2 weeks for my then to be new wife as she is gin obsessed

  8. Kolmo

I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time owing
to our office air-con not functionin’
9 people, 10 computers, pungent lunch choices,
    ’tis a sin
for it smells like a bin,
It truly smells like a bin.

As we sit in this airless 28 degree cage,
I scroll through the broadsheet front page,
Lo! this situation we are in
could be eased with a win
of a bottle of Chinnery Gin.

  9. Spaghetti Hoop

Tonic and gin, are so akin
Though I must be more adventurous.
I’d love to try, a gin so dry
    With oolong and osmanthus.

  10. Tarfton Clax

I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time, owing to the fact that I spent the last hour in a physio’s being dry needled and pummelled, from my dodgy knee to my useless arm to the hair of my Chinnery Gin Chin. I am tired, and sore and dry and discombobulated, and in sore need of a medicinal drop of such a delightful gin as I sit in a stifling office with no windows, and precious little light.

  11. Slightly Bemused

While I do like a gin and tonic, I must admit to being a bit of a philistine when it comes to different craft gins. I cannot drink gin on its own, so the differences in the various distillations are pretty much lost on me. Other than the utter rotgut cheepies, any gin will do for me, with a good tonic (and don’t get me started there – Shchweppes is fine), Ice and lemon.

Sadly, while the offer interests me, the prize would really be wasted. Better to give it to a more deserving and discerning palate.

Now, whiskies, on the other hand….

  12. SammyRay

I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time owing to my state of languor, cause by a weekend passed by in the blink of an eye.

  16. LonelyRock

I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time owing to the fact that it is mine and my gin-appreciating girlfriend’s two-year anniversary soon and she’ll need that bottle to help her through the next two.

I deserve a bottle of Chinnery Gin especially at this time owing to a weekend of sin, caused by gin, which left me with a grin, a blokes heart I might win…so Chinnery..am I in?
