Battle Of Barrow Street

at

This Saturday.

Barrow Street, Grand Canal Dock, Dublin 2

A protest will be held over “the gardai’s inaction” toward what organisers allege as “the ongoing open incitement to hatred taking place on the streets of Dublin”.

Daily protests led by Anti Corruption Ireland founder Gemma O’Doherty, who was de-platformed by Google-owned YouTube, have taken place outside the tech giant’s Dublin HQ.

These protests are now entering their fifth week.

Dublin Says No To Hate regard Anti-Corruption Ireland as ‘anti-immigrant’ (a charge ACI strenuously deny).

They have urged social media companies to censor and de-platform others they consider to be ‘far right’.

Justin Barrett, leader and half of the Nationalist Party was there saying that Western European culture (and “Christendom”) is and always will be the superior culture…

  2. Ben Redmond

It looks like a group of correct thought promoters calling for the gardai to police deviationist thought promoters.

    1. some old quare

Or- it looks like a group of concerned citizens demanding that the legislation on hate speech is actually enforced?

      As previously.

The Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act 1989 made it an offence to make, distribute, or broadcast “threatening, abusive or insulting” words, images, or sounds with intent or likelihood to “stir up hatred”, where “hatred” is “against a group of persons in the State or elsewhere on account of their race, colour, nationality, religion, ethnic or national origins, membership of the travelling community or sexual orientation”. Frustration at the low number of prosecutions (18 by 2011) was attributed to a misconception that the law addressed hate crimes more generally as opposed to incitement in particular.”

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech#Ireland

This is not some set of bespoke rules on a website or platform- it is the law.

Maybe someone could dig up the numbers to date who have actually been prosecuted? I am guessing that for online offences it is pretty low- if at all.

        1. some old quare

Wikipedia- Are you saying that it is wrong? If so, do enlighten us.

Where is The Old Boy when you need him- boosey lunch in Ryans again I expect.

          1. GiggidyGoo

Tsk tsk. You’ve mentioned the Act. Easy look it up. Worth a read. Not exactly what wikipedia says kind you. But knock yourself out, and read it.
Oh look, soq attacking the person again. Trying to stir up hatred then soq? Or is it just you who decides what counts?
            Tsk tsk.

      1. Cian

PROHIBITION OF INCITEMENT TO HATRED ACT, 1989 says:
written material, words, behaviour, visual images or sounds, as the case may be, are threatening, abusive or insulting and are intended or, having regard to all the circumstances, are likely to stir up hatred.
        where
        “hatred” means hatred against a group of persons in the State or elsewhere on account of their race, colour, nationality, religion, ethnic or national origins, membership of the travelling community or sexual orientation;

So, yes, I’d say some old quare’s wiki quotation is correct.

        1. GiggidyGoo

And who decides if hatred is being stirred? Surely the law supported by the Gardai? It’s not for you, I or soq to decide whether hatred is being stirred.
So, by gathering at a Garda station, in the same vein as gathering at Google, will that be inciting hatred against the Gardai, seeing as they haven’t gone legal with O’Doherty.
As I say, have a good read of the Act, but more so, try understand what it actually covers.

      2. McVitty

This is not why GOD was deplatformed. Google couldn’t give a damn about the Irish constitution. They have their terms and she violated one of them. Her account was suspended and she used her second account its place – and that is against their rules. They may not like her politics and took the opportunity to remove her but it was on these grounds. Facts matter.

        1. jeremy kyle

I agree, she wasn’t “deplatformed” for being a racist or hate speech – just for being an idiot.

  3. Owen C

“Dublin Says No To Hate regard Anti-Corruption Ireland as ‘anti-immigrant’ (a charge ACI strenuously deny) and have urged social media companies to censor and de-platform others they consider to be ‘far right’.”

Bodger, be honest – how many times did you read that and re-read that before you nervously hit submit?

  4. GiggidyGoo

I see Gemma O Doherty is named above, but no mention of the leaders names of the Dublin Says No Hate campaign.
No mention either on their facebook page.

    1. McVitty

That youtube video you linked is a forewarning – frenzied people ignorant of science wanting to burn a skeptic scientist. The people you mention will never denounce such behaviour because there is a short-sighted soft alliance between them.

  5. Rob

Am I correct in thinking this is a publication about a protest trying to limit the publicity given to a protest against limits on publication?

      1. some old quare

The first line on the Facebook page states-

“We invite people to gather at Irishtown Garda Station at 2.30pm on Saturday Aug 10th. We intend to vocalise our anger at the Gardaí’s inaction against the ongoing open incitement to hatred taking place on the streets of Dublin.”

That is much wider than just tech platforms Bodger.

          1. ReproBertie

We have laws against incitement to hatred. This is not a call for thought policing. It’s a call for the laws against incitement to hatred to be upheld.

          2. ReproBertie

You need to back up a little there Zuppster.

I have nothing to do with the protest and won’t be attending. All I did was point out that the reason for the protest is not about policing thought but about enforcing laws. Maybe direct your questions at the Facebook page of those organising it.

          3. millie vanilly strikes again

            @repro

I wouldn’t bother. You’d have better luck debating with a sock.

    1. McVitty

The Irish constitution gives people the right to free assembly. GOD is not openly anti-immigration, she is against open borders and mass immigration. There is a difference and it’s hardly subtle. She’s a little unhinged but she is entitled to her rights under the constitution – and that includes protection from defamation (“right to one’s good name”)….so GOD is going to succeed.

      1. some old quare

She’s not a little unhinged- she is swinging both ways in a gale force wind that nobody else can feel let alone see.

Maybe she is actually right but howling at the moon is not a good look.

        1. Papi

Maybe she is calling Zuppy’s moonbats to her aid?
          “Moonbats, Assemble!!!!”
Course that would be immigration of sorts too. This is hard.

          1. Papi

            Your ma.
That’s your general level, and really all you deserve. I suspect your poor ma deserves far far better than whatever you are.

  6. Postit Note

Bodger, promoted Gemma, and her early political work despite the obvious warning signs. Now Broadsheet refuse to stand up against her very obvious and open positions, and that of some of the people that are allowed to speak there. So far this week a certain leader of a certain nationalist party mocked mental illness, another of her supporters posting a video instructing people how to use a Scissors to attack invaders, for example. Really Broadsheet i reduced my visits after your promoting Gemma and Leather jacket guy but this post has me leaving for good

    1. AFoxIndeed

forgive my ignorance, I never watched those leather jacket guy video’s they just looked pointless to me, but did he do something wrong? I notice he’s not featured anymore.

          1. GiggidyGoo

You’ve already told them that he came from a foul pit. Isn’t that incitement to hatred?

        1. GiggidyGoo

So you’ll be protesting outside Google on Saturday, about the foul pit that you say is YouTube?

          1. jeremy kyle

No, I don’t think I could be arsed. I doubt you will be either considering the amount of links you’ve posted from there.

          2. jeremy kyle

I know you’re trying to pretend like you’re making a point, but you still haven’t actually made one.

    2. some old quare

Gemtrails was not coming out with that poo when she was campaigning for the presidential elections and sure wasn’t Izzy Kamikaze a regular guest on Broadsheet on the telly too?

      1. max

if you ignore the serial killer of limerick and the false flag Veronica Guerin stuff then sure

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

And the unicorns, and the chemtrails and the 5G and the stupid dust and the alphabet communism and the racism and the threats of violence to local residents.

Gemtrails fanclub are the dregs of society attracted to her like flies to a turd.

          1. McVitty

She is against centralisation power/agendas and power abuses. It’s not complicated….

            1. Chemtrails is a bit out there.
            2. Vaccines are something people should be concerned about – as in what’s in them, big pharma having power etc.
            3. There is evidence that 5G is harmful and there should be a drive to clarify that – it is also invasive as far as the surveillance economy goes. There should be discussion on it.
            4. There is a notable liberal/leftist bias in our media (or at least a suppression of views that run counter) – and you might notice that the arts funding goes to projects that promote inclusion (I’m not saying that’s not entirely bad or without good intention but you will find little that taps into or celebrates who we are as a people – outside of things that critique us harshly). It’s effectively programming.
            5. Immigration is a little more complex but open borders is an idea, orderly migration is another – the latter is not necessarily anti-immigration.

          2. GiggidyGoo

Pretty damning isn’t it? That’s what you’ve hitched your wagon to on Saturday. And you have the audacity to complain about Gemma O Doherty. You’ve chosen quite an icon in Fiona Pettit O’Leary haven’t you?

          3. Daisy Chainsaw

            Big pharma? FFS!

Gemtrails censors anyone she doesn’t agree with by blocking them on Twitter. She’s only interested in her own “free speech” and having her money making Youtube channel reinstated. Someone used their free speech to call her a racist and she went screeching to the cops about it.

          4. Daisy Chainsaw

I’m not censoring her. she can spout all the batcrapcrazy drivel she likes. She has no entitlement to drivel spouting on a private company’s platform. Why isn’t she protesting outside the Indo’s office? They “silenced”her too.

  7. eoin

I’m enjoying the Barrow Street protests. There really are issues with Google and Youtube and to a limitedl extent, Gemma is articulately highlighting them. It must be annoying to nearby residents who open the window to the loudspeaker, and maybe something can be done about that specific aspect, but let her go, she has a right to protest, she has (tiny) support, she’s grating on Maia Dunphy’s nerves which is hilarious and Gemma now trawls the internet in search of material which is hostile to Google and some of it is legitimate and interesting.

    1. Chris

Oh please-have a look at any of her videos on her facebook page at the moment- imaginary congressmen calling her and telling her how they will bring her plight to Trump himself. She either needs to be committed or given a grant for her excellent performance art.

    1. Daisy Chainsaw

She can’t spout her trash on youtube and get paid for clicks and that’s why she’s protesting. She’s lost an income stream and that’s what she’s browned off about.

      1. GiggidyGoo

So are there click-through advertisements on her youtube videos (what advertisers were on her videos – are you going after them?) Or were there ANY advertisers on them? Do you actually know how rewards from youtube work even?

          1. Daisy Chainsaw

Even more popular? To whom? What demographic in Ireland? She’s proven to be unelectable getting only 1.8% of votes in an election that gets protest candidates elected. She’s a joke, as is anyone thick enough to take her and her crazy ideas seriously.

          2. Man On Fire

Look at all the comments daisy.

The more you lot whinge, the more popular she becomes.

          3. GiggidyGoo

So, WERE there click-through ads on her videos? If there were, have you gone after those advertisers? Were there any advertisers on them? Do you actually know how rewards from you tube work then?

  8. Ian-O

Can we put Gemma and Larry Page and Sergey Brin into Thunderdome with some meat hooks and chainsaws and film it?

Throw in Zuckerberg and Bezos and it would be a real thriller. Providing at least one of them lost a limb, preferably the head limb….

    ;)

  9. Joe Small

I’m uneasy about the censorship of anyone I disagree with. Where’s the line between inciting acts of violence and the right to free speech?
I mean some of Bodger’s views are pretty daft but they’re mostly entertaining.

    1. some old quare

I think the north is well ahead on this one- you can think what you want but when you say it, or type it, you may be breaking the law.

Drew Harris is well aware of what incitement to hatred means so again I ask- how many people have been prosecuted to date and how many of those were for online offences?

      1. Jonboy

“I think the north is well ahead on this one- you can think what you want but when you say it, or type it, you may be breaking the law.”

Unless you’re writing ‘Kill all Taigs’ on a flag and burning it.

          1. some old quare

But isn’t that your argument- that people should be allowed spout whatever hateful bile they want?

But oh no that is different- THEIRS is hateful bile- MINE is just freedom of speech.

          2. Ug

Look at this fool trying to equate Gemma O’D’s free speech protest with street violence.

Words are not violence, violence is violence.

And in this culture and time all the violence seems to come from the loonyleftyliberals – eg: PANTIFA – who use violence to suppress free speech.

          3. Papi

And, Zuppy has officially jumped the shark, ladies and gentlemen. With company this time though. Which is nice.

          4. ReproBertie

Still can’t identify anyone actually denying her right to freedom of expression though.

            Presumably because nobody is.

            LOL yet again.

          5. Papi

Question for ya, do you wake up at night with the sheets soaking wet? Maybe a freight train running, oh, I don’t know, through the middle of your head? uh huh?

          6. ReproBertie

Are you asking me? Is that supposed to be evidence of her right to freedom of expression being denied?

          7. ReproBertie

Did she breach the terms of conditions of use of a private company’s platform?

Is being kicked off a private platform the only evidence you have of her right to freedom of expression being denied?

          8. ReproBertie

Never mind that thing, look at this thing.

So you can’t offer anything to back up the notion that she has been denied her right to freedom of expression.

            “Free speech protest”

            LOL!

          9. Man On Fire

Last I checked bias against one idea versus another equates to a denial of freedom of expression.

Have you anything to offer up other than petty swipes?

          10. Papi

            “Yea, beside your ma”

Petty swipes from the empty vessel.

            Again.
Try harder. Actually don’t, it would send you into a spin.

          11. B9 Com From No

No problem – sorry, was logging in on a different device, now, as I was saying …

Papi’s comments are often insightful, funny and ascerbic.

MOF = yours are none of the above.

    2. Holden MaGroin

One man’s daft and entertaining is another’s paranoia inducing call to action.

Apologies for stating the obvious but in the history of fake opposition and false flag ops, there have been no greater traitors to a patriot cause than ⁦@GerryAdamsSF⁩ and his SF/IRA mob. They hate #Ireland and her people. One day, they will face judgement #Ireland #Antifa

She really has a hate boner for SF

    1. some old quare

There are two types of nationalism- left and right. SF are left and Gemtrails plus assorted wildlife are right- hence the vitriol. If it wasn’t for SF, there would be a far right movement in Ireland at this stage but Peter Casey proved how quickly that could flip, if the right buttons are pushed.

  11. Holden MaGroin

I have to say I followed the anti-Gemtrails guys on Twitter for a couple of weeks and the amount of negativity in my timeline was tiring so I unfollowed them all. I feel better now. Thanks for asking.

However the Gemmaroids are very racist and strange guys/gals: see video about “reporting from Courtown on the rapes by non-nationals”, the very scary “this scissors can be turned into two knives as I walk though a progressive area” video and the shrill “this Garda won’t follow up on my complaint because I told him too” video.

Some of the anti-Gemmaroids didn’t exactly come off as entirely stable either though. I found it ironic that they were shouting so loudly about telling people to “go back where they came from because hate has no place here.”

    1. Starina

and the fella speaking on barrow st this week about how Hazel Cho is a migrant (she was born and raised here, he’s just racist)

      1. Holden MaGroin

        Vile people.

And the inference that Fiona Pettit O’Leary should have been kept in hospital as she was unstable.

  12. Chris

It’s google’s platform and if they decided that racists and the mentally ill cant use it to recruit others then that is their business.

    1. Daisy Chainsaw

That’s capitalism, baby. Google aren’t some communist, equality for everyone, collective. It’s their private company and they’re exercising their right as a private company to do whatever the hell they want. If Gemtrails doesn’t like it, rather than whinging to Google, she’s free to set up her own media platform.

      1. GiggidyGoo

“…..and they’re exercising their right as a private company to do whatever the hell they want.”
That’s a very odd opinion on commerce.

      1. millie vanilly strikes again

But not, thankfully, as delusional as you and your (so fittingly named) friend ‘Ug’.

          1. GiggidyGoo

“Taig”, is used as a derogatory term for a Roman Catholic, used by Northern Irish Protestants and Ulster loyalists.
Congratulations soq. You hate Roman Catholics. And have no problem inciting that hatred here. And what was it again that the protest is about on Saturday? Someone inciting hate, was it?
Tsk tsk. You’re not what you’re making out you are, are you?

    2. McVitty

Wow, where on earth did you go to school? And were you born yesterday or something? Would you apply your logic to protect a bakery that refuses to bake a political cake? Holy cow Batman.

With their services combined, they hold a monopoly position. Like Standard Oil, Google/Alphabet should be broken up. That is the starting point in this. Dig a bit deeper into how Google behaves and actually inform yourself.

      1. Daisy Chainsaw

There are other search engines and platforms for Gemtrails to spew forth. if you have issues with Google, take it up with the CCPC. Squalking on Barrow St isn’t going to get Google to do anything.

        1. McVitty

Between the search engine, youtube, maps and other integrated services, the competition has been left behind – and I’ve tried to get by without Google on occasion. I hate to sound harsh but you don’t care because you think it doesn’t affect you (I’d go so far as to say you think it’s very convenient) but wait for the day when the winds change and it works against you.

Defending Google is not the same thing as attacking GOD here….and do you really think we regulate the likes of Google here in “the best small country in the world to do business”??

GOD is questionable in many ways but I respect her for bringing her fight to Google’s door. The last time they shut her account down, she stayed all day until they restored it. There was nobody who could help her, as in no customer or client service – had she been paying for advertising on Google or paying for back-end data analytics, you can be sure she would have been able to speak to someone much sooner.

          1. GiggidyGoo

Oh Daisy. Have you run out of thoughts? Scuttled back to the safety of the ‘Oh Dear’ nonsensical hideaway..

  13. some old quare

Well that was fun- especially the idea that Bodger was sweating buckets.

I’m particularly interested in that immigrant from outside the M50- feisty- is the Green party growing them in a field up around the border region or something?

Lets do it again soon- Saturday evening is good for me.

          1. GiggidyGoo

I think it’s a mis-spelling. GTI – those Killeen fellows can be quite rewarding maybe?

        1. GiggidyGoo

          So, two posts in succession.
          As mentioned above…..

          1. McVitty

Good call – fair play. He is suggesting that hate’s acceptable or not necessarily a bad thing if you target the right group. And they are worried about 1930’s Germany and the so-called “Far Right”.

This one is for SOQ: https://youtu.be/gRaEVzF6DOk

          2. some old quare

My background is RC you clown and after your attempts to throw mud at the Belfast Pride last Sunday- it is pretty obvious what your problem is.

          3. T Re(n)d Setter(B9Com From No)

My mother is deceased. True, that wasn’t very astute of her, you have me there.

          4. GiggidyGoo

soq. Your background is RC then? And that would explain what? Are you a practicing RC and believe all of its teachings, or is it a background you’re not comfortable with?

  14. ReproBertie

Looks like the “free speech protest” are taking a day off tomorrow. The big brave “patriots” are going to hide at home rather than face up to opposition.

    LOL!

    1. GiggidyGoo

Just see that this morning. In the interests of safety is what GOD tweeted. Has she a point with that explanation?

        1. GiggidyGoo

The founder of this movement, Fiona Pettit – O’Leary is one to be fearful of. You did see the video in the link I put up? There is also one of her when she was being served with a summons. Not a nice one either.
GOD made the correct decision in my view. Safety is the proper option.

          1. ReproBertie

As I said she’s a fear monger and clearly you’re buying what she’s selling.

No, I didn’t watch your video. I rarely watch YouTube videos posted as if they were evidence of something.

          2. GiggidyGoo

Well, i’m buying the safety aspect in this case.
If you’re afraid of looking at a video in case it might change your mind about something, that’s your choice.
How have you made your mind up about GOD?

          3. ReproBertie

Yeah, safety. I’m sure the people going down to protest were all tooled up and ready to rumble. Ridiculous fear mongering to reinforce the replacement narrative and excuse running away.

There are countless online videos spouting nonsense. I have better things to do with my time than waste it watching videos trying to decide which is the bigger idiot in an argument.

I made my mind up about god a long time ago. That’s why I’m an atheist.
