This morning/afternoon.

A pinch of the almost 59,000 students – some not jumping – who are receiving the results of their Leaving Certificate examinations today.

Rote learning rocks.

How did you do?

Is it my imagination or has the focus on reporting of leaving results increased since the 80s? I am not complaining – it is an important thing. I just do not recall a media focus when I got my results. Oh, yes, the papers did report it, but the main thing I remember was the huge spread of CAO placements, rather than lots of pictures of photogenic young tykes.

Maybe we were not so photogenic, back then. I know I was not, and like many of my classmates I probably helped Clearasil stay in business.

I recall photos and interviews from Loreto, Institute of Ed and Blackrock College some years back.
I was abroad working in a factory when mine came out. The fuss was the CAO and what college you’d end up in and how much of a grant.

There wasn’t the same splash on Twitter, Facebook, or WhatsApp when I did my leaving.

      I got 11 points so I did.

    3. Slightly Bemused

I still have no idea how many points I got. I got where I wanted: turned out what I actually do (and love) was something else. I blame the guidance counsellors.

I did my leaving in in the mid ’00s, and it was already mental then.

In most other countries there will be a tiny piece in the paper saying ‘good luck to all the pupils doing their exams today’, and of course some nice photos of the happy kids getting their results. By the time I did it, the Irish Times used to have like a 12-page pull-out exam supplement, an ‘exam diary’ of some leaving poor leaving student who, along with doing their actual leaving, had to come up with 600 words on ‘what was new on English paper II?’

      1. Bodger

‘The Points Race’ was the name given to the regular Leaving Cert column in the Irish Times during the 1980s. No wonder some of are nervous wrecks.

Ah yes, the exams for which they already celebrated! only in Ireland, 2 months for results….

    1. Barry the Hatchet

2 months seems reasonable enough, no? Same sort of turnaround time as for the A levels.

I don’t know, I think its fairly normal for big exams to take a couple of months to come though. I know in the UK they get their results in August – I think they sit their exams at the beginning of June.

I’m surprised those wonderful researcher types in RTE haven’t devised a programme to revisit those who achieved top marks in begone leaving certs.
Would be interesting to see what became of them… did top marks ensure they went on to fulfil their career ambitions?
    Did they make millions?
    Are they happy??

The wealthiest peers of mine are either in building trades or got sorted for some job in finance through the old boys networking after doing fairly low pointed business course. The art college crowd and teachers are the poorest.

They probably also have the best pension too.

Teaching is a tough job, and those that do a good job (and there are many) deserve the money.

in fairness to Bort, he did say his peers…so may be a few years out of college – and hanging around with bankers.

talent ? or having a new conversation ? or knowing the right people ?
I was a print tech ( yes I can offer to show my etchings..) for years in Paris, ended up padding it out with running restaurants and real estate) I met a lot of talented artists, established artists and you don’t start really making cash until you are 60 on average if you can keep going that long

Same as being a musician then
Unless you do the weddings etc
            I think it’s a calling Janet
I’d a few friends who were artists during the boom and I truly admired and looked up to them it takes a lot of boo boos to be honest
More than most of us have

    2. Spaghetti Hoop

The art college crowd could only get face-painting jobs.I don’t know any of them that did well financially. Married money some of them.
Well able to draw the dole, wha?

that generation have to behave sensibly or it’s all over social media, poor soda, I’m so happy the wild years only had eye witnesses

  5. DOC

My next door neighbour is a Teacher
But she is a Primary school Teacher not a Secondary school Teacher
She says it is stressful having 30+ kids running around
But she said it is less stressful than having Secondary school students threatening to stab her or sexually assault her. She is a bit of a Joker so i still do not know if she was being serious or not
